Halo 3 FNF: Free Maps Edition
vexed alex | 2:36 PM on 03.28.2008 21 comments

Just in case some of you didn't hear the good news, Bungie has made their Heroic map pack free. This means that the burden of having to decide when and when not to do specific maps is over. I can finally breath easy knowing everyone has everything (for now). Here's the word from Bungie themselves:

"The Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack is now available free of charge on Xbox Live Marketplace. To download the maps, go to the Marketplace section of the Media tab (when you press start in Halo 3's menu system) and then click and find the Heroic Map Pack and download away. The Heroic Map Pack contains three all-new Halo 3 maps."

Please download them before you join up tonight. I will not, not play any of the new maps because you were too lazy to download them. I will have to boot you. You can come back after you have the maps. It sounds sort of mean, but it's really reasonable. The maps have been free for some time and it only takes about 15 minutes to grab them. Plus they're fun. I don't know why I'm going over this, but yeah.

As for games and maps to play, I have a lot of Foundry custom maps. It seems as though the night may revolve around the current new maps just so some of you newbies can get the gist of 'em. Also, Grifball.

On top of those casual Foundry maps, we'll also have our traditional competitive games. I really enjoyed SWAT (No shields and Battle Rifles), but the alternate version of it. The one where you have one life and lasts 5 rounds. Like TheGoldenDonut, I really liked how we communicated and worked closely as a team. That gametype may be fun on a map like Stantoff. Of course, it'd have to be edited a little to include more cover, but leave that up to me.

Remember that all map/gametype suggestions should be PM'd to me beforehand. That isn't to say I won't give you host if you have something cool to show us. It's just nice to be prepared. Don't be afraid to ask for host, though. As long as you don't go psycho and start booting people, I don't really care. And make sure what your making us play isn't fail.

Alex warns you about fail maps/custom gametypes and he'll probably make you play some flops. The guy's a fucking hypocrite, huh?

The night will start from around 9 PM to 10 PM Eastern and 6 PM to 7 PM Pacific. Just look for me being online during that time (I'll also be spamming invites when it starts). If I don't have you on my friends list, send me a message that reads FNF and I'll send you a request. It's pretty easy to join up, guys.

If you haven't taken part in any Friday Night Fights, do it. It's loads of fun. If Halo 3 isn't your thing, check out Snaileb's post on the c-blogs. He organizes this all into one coherent post (unlike me) and it's easier to figure out what you want to play. I'm just his pawn who takes care of the Haloes. Don't forget to keep your eyes on the front page as well. That FNF post usually lands later in the evening.

I'd like to wish everyone a good time. The PS3 crowd, the PC guys, the 360 fellas and of course our amigos across the pond with their Euro FNF. Everyone have a blast tonight.

P.S. - I copied and pasted this blog on a new blog. When I made it live it ended up near the bottom of the front page. I feel sort of bad for doing this, but the people in IRC peer pressured me into doing it. I suggest a fix for this? Maybe have it post your blog up top on the first time you make it live?

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

LOL, I was actually planning to do that late at night.

Also, watch out. Heretic/Distrato claims that he's going to join us in Halo3. Lost Odyssey>Blue Dragon guys, it's a fact.

P.S. You're a bitch. <3

Have fun tonight guys!!

Until CoD4 gets here, I'm still limited to Halo 3, Gears of War, Rock Band, and Burnout Paradise for my FNF fun, so I'll probably hop on for the Halos tonight.

I really wish I hadn't bought the Heroic Pack, but it's nice that I'll finally get some use out of it now that everybody will have it.

Your boyfriend is going to join us 007?! You must be so *excited*.

Alex, I to loved the one life gametype. I loved communicating with you all bouncing from corpse to corpse.

Also, I have decided to not buy the next new maps. Fuck that. GTA IV is going to take up all my time anyway once it's out.

Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…
