Before I get this started, I'd like to mention that this post is mainly for those who have multiple consoles. I'd also like to say that I'd really appreciate it if we keep the console biased bullshit out of everything because this has nothing to do with this post. This is a comparison between 2 racing simulators that happen to be on opposing video game consoles. Price will not be taken into account because Forza 2 is sold at a reduced price now.
I've got a brand spankin' new shiny PS3, and I've decided to invest in two new games. Unreal Tournament III, and going back to my racing sim roots, Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo really brings back good memories I had with my PSOne during those slow days after school. I sunk so many hours into GT 2.
Part of what drew me into the game was the hundreds of cars to choose from. The list was massive. From used dealers to new cars, it was insane. I'd go in and buy cars, mod them, and test them to see what went with which track. I was so fascinated with how different a lot of the cars handled from one another. It was good times indeed, but boy how have they've changed.
Up until now I've gotten my racing sim fix from Forza 2, but that wasn't by choice. I've only recently gotten my PS3, but if things go the way they've gotten with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, I'm sticking with Turn 10's game. Forza, although not as pretty, plays better and is better in every other aspect aside from graphics.
The most important thing we've got that just kills Gran Turismo is it's lack of car damage. Now, I know this has been said, but people who haven't played Forza 2 don't understand how well this works when you're dealing with people bumping into eachother. I mean, in Forza 2 you don't use other cars as bumpers to keep your speed while going through a turn. You do that and you're dead.
I watched the GTTV (a collection of videos inside the game) and it the creator's reasoning for keeping damage out of Gran Turismo was "beauty." He said something about not wanting to see a beautiful car destroyed, blah, blah, blah. It's a poor argument when you're talking about playing against people on the internet. You don't want them abusing your shitty system, and penalty time is that shitty system I'm talking about.
The second most important thing that Forza 2 pretty much destroys GT: 5P is online. Gran Turismo online is absolutely retarded. There is no way to get people into a room to race. There's only a crappy matchmaking system. That means you'll play with strangers all the time. Also, there's some connectivity issues. Japan, I don't know what the fuck's up, but get your asses together when it comes to online games.
Forza 2 also has a community site and is heavily integrated into the web. Car sales are constantly going on, screenshots are being shared, and driving techniques are always being discussed. It's just more alive.
The classes are also all over the place. A Lexus is automatically lumped in the same class as a Ferrari. Pretty soon players are going to find the one car that dominates everything and there goes diversity out the window. Especially since there's no way to do
anything to the vehicles which is what these sim racers are all about.
While Gran Turismo is pretty, it's pretty crappy when compared to the now cheaper Forza 2. There's only so much shock and awe I can give to a pretty dash view; especially since the 3rd person camera kind of sucks. Sometimes I just want to look at the car and I hate the way it's positioned and how it's pretty much stationary behind the car. It's pretty dull. Forza 2 also has better physics. It just feels the way a racing sim should in a video game. GT cars almost feel slightly more arcady.
I do really wish Forza 2 had a drift mode. That was really fun...
Anywho. Back to UT III.
Also, a bit of a question means I've only played GT5P for an hour or so over a friends, I can't recall seeing any form of extensive paint mode in any GT, let alone GT5. Is it there? I absolutely love some of the stuff that I see come out of Forza!
But that's just me....
Also, when I said Arcady I meant slightly less real. I should have worded that differently.
There is no type of livery paint system in GT5P.
My father has owned a BMW Z4 and a 330i, and it just so happens that he had a 2005 330i, which was in GT 4. It feels just fucking like it. I swear, with a racing wheel it's the closest you'll get without actually driving. That's how I remember it.
Again, just me though. I'm no expert on automobiles.
ALSO, FNF CONTEST?
WAT
However, Forza 2 to GT5P is probably not a good comparison side by side as games go, BUT, GT5P costs much more than it should. Pricing justifies your comparison in some way I suppose.
GT5 is supposedly going to have car damage. I'm going to believe it when I see it but Forza does have a upper hand there at the moment.
I'm probably skipping Prologue, I don't care much for a overpriced glorified demo. I need the real deal.
I must say though Prologue is tempting because I want to try out the new Nissan GT-R (even if its just a virtual form)!
It's gotten raving reviews from CAR Magazine (Or was it EVO Magazine? There goes my memory), where they compared it against 3 different cars. A Corvette C6, Audi R8 and a Porshe 911 (I forget which one, damn it!), and the GT-R came out in their favor. Considering its price, thats really impressive.
Yeah Forza2 is a fucking awesome game... but if you compare the nurburgring in F2 to the one in GT5 ( played it at the nurburgring in a PS3-demostand ) you'll see that GT5 is just sooooooooooo much more detailed... it just really feels like the real deal, whereas nurburgring in forza2 is more like an 'interpretation' ( there's not even people watching at Brünchen :p )
Forza2 has the best racing-gameplay by far, however, I haven't tried GT5(p) yet with a decent racing wheel ( except for that 1 lap on the nurburgring but that was in a fully-animated audi-TT :p ) so I can't really say how 'real' it feels with a wheel, but F2 surely feels damn good, I own a golf V irl and i immediately bought one in F2 and GT5P and the one in F2 drives like mine, but the one in GT5P with the incar-view just makes me feel like i'm truly in my own car, which is very pleasant :-D
Currently I prefer F2 but I wonder how long the M$-racing-wheel will be able to withstand the power of a Logitech-racing-wheel ( I ordered the one that can turn for 900° :-) )
I heard Polyphony didn't even bother to assess the competition (clearly Forza 2), to see what Turn 10 are doing, that has matched or better GT series. Polyphony again, gave a lame excuse as to why this was so.
To be honest, while GT is better known, I feel Forza 2 is the new king of these types of driving games. Polyphony have done little to deserve that number one spot recently, and are living on exhaust fumes of previous games. Not ever a good idea.
Go, Forza 2!!
Had Forza 2 and currently play GT5P. GT better and more detailed. Forza has some interesting aspects like the auction house and customization, but that is about it. GT driving experience much more realistic and fulfilling. I do think it is a little overpriced for a demo, but I absolutely love it. You are right about the online... I wish they would have shipped with better online features. Good write up though.
It amuses me that everybody and there grandma want to tell me about Forza's Damage modeling and the lack of one in GT. Yet when you wreck in Forza enough in come the magical racing fairies to restore your car back to mint condition. LMAO.
Bottom line: Forza2 is for the pimp your car, arcade racing style fans. GT is for the car fanatics who want a richer and sim like experience who get their thrills from the actual handling of the car and out of this world presentation.
Hope to see you in PS3 Friday Night Fights Bro.
To your point about your car magically restoring back to it's original condition, what? The only restoration you get is after the race and after you've paid a fine that comes out of your winnings. There is no repair that goes in during a race.
And what I'm trying to get across is that GT is a relic. It's being passed up by Forza 2 and it's modern features and gameplay.
I seriously can't have fun when I know if I run into some car on the next turn I can slingshot may way around it and maintain speed. I find that silly. The pretty visuals are nothing after about 3 hours.
Just because Forza lets you personalize your car doesn't make it an arcade game. It's a sim racer with arcade game features, which is nice for a change. I'm tired of a racing souped up Acura and it looking stock. You should see the amazing tuning options that actually do change the way your car feels and the great telemetry information.
It's time for Polyphony to grow up and get their heads out of their asses like one of the commenter's said. They should have at least played Forza to see what the competition was doing.
I have to agree with Alex though. Forza 2 is by far the better racing experience. As much as I love GT 2 and 3 (especially GT 2 because it is the only racing game I know of that includes my real life car, the BMW 318ti) Forza surpassed it with the car customization and the damage modeling. To me, the two series play pretty similarly, but I haven't actually played GT5p yet. Because of the similar gameplay however I doubt I will ever go back to GT until they match and exceed what Forza offers.
