Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

Ghost Town: Halo 3 Map Revealed
vexed alex | 4:00 PM on 02.21.2008 16 comments

One of the next batch of (most likely overpriced) DLC maps for Halo 3 has been revealed by Bungie. The map is called Ghost Town. The map was originally reffered to as "O.K. Coral." and is an asymmetric map designed for 4 on 4 battles. So basically it's another mid-sizer.

Visually the map is pretty beautiful. You can't really tell from pictures how it's going to work gameplay wise, but I have faith in Bungie that they'll work out fine. Hopefully this and the new patch will renew my enjoyment of Halo. It's really been getting to the point where I'm just like, "meh, I'll play Rock Band or Forza instead."

There do seem to be a couple of hiding spots and I really am enjoying the look if this map. It's based off the Sierra 117 singe player level so it takes place in Africa. Like most maps on Halo games, they have to reminisce of the single player experience. At least that's what I heard somewhere.

I'm sure people have already made up their minds whether they're buying these or not. I haven't. I tried telling myself that $10 was an O.K. price for the last map pack but I can't fool myself any longer. Those maps were not worth the price and I do hope they do something special for these. I'm not saying I'm not paying for the next batch, but I'm not saying I am.

If it's my money they're after I'm sure they can squeeze $10 out of me for 3 maps but I need some innovation instead of just new terrain. Let me see something I haven't seen yet. A destroyed building in the middle of the jungle is good and pretty, but it's just a destroyed building in the middle of the jungle. If they can further evolve the forge level design tools with a new map, then I'm all for it.

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I never bought the Halo 2 ones, but these new ones they're making for Halo 3 are pretty damn good, and this one's looks the best.

These pictures stretch out my blog too much. It's fucking annoying.

It's too bad I'm too lazy to resize them in photoshop and not in photobucket.

As much as I hate throwing away money, I'll probably buy these new maps cuz I'm a sucker.

Wow...that actually looks like a cool map. I still think its cruel for Microsoft to charge money for downloadble content like maps. Don't think people should have to pay money to keep enjoying your game on a new level but oh well. Maybe Ill make my friend buy it since he has Halo 3

Yeah, the last maps really weren't worth 10$. But if these new maps are as good as they sound, then I'm definitely buying them. Also, if the rumors are true, then the supposed remake of Sidewinder (the really huge snow map on Halo1) will definitely convince me to buy the new maps. I wuv dat map...

I really wish they'd stop fucking around with maps and get around to a PC port. Since they're not with MS anymore, it doesn't have to be Vista exclusive.

@ Eschatos

I don't know if Halo 3 feels like a game that needs to be on PC. It's paced and created specifically for consoles.

Also, Microsoft owns Halo 3 so they probably would have to port it over to Vista.

Looks amazing, I can't wait.

And MS still owns Bungie, all Bungie was a create studio that allows to be their entity but MS still has first dibs on everything.

I bought the first pack, wasn't worth it. Don't expect to pay for this new pack either. I don't even play Halo 3 enough for it to matter.

I'm still just waiting on the first pack. Once this new one comes out, the first one becomes free, eh? I'll do the same for this one as well. I'm not as into Halo as I used to be, so I can wait.

Looks promising. But I dunno if it can cure the boredom I feel with Halo 3 now.

I'll wait for the Halo 1 & 2 remakes and for them to be free to buy anything. And a new game type.
