Dan Hsu Explains Ubisoft and Ziff Davis Debacle
vexed alex | 9:41 PM on 01.14.2008 11 comments

In today's EGM live, the crew introduces a new round table discussion segment. In this new segment, Hsu explains what happened between Ziff and Ubisoft. It pretty much exposes Ubisoft as a collective group off ass twats.

Hsu says that the Ubisoft banning was a sudden cut-off in coverage and advertisement unlike the slow process of the Mortal Kombat and Sony Sports teams. He says that the whole thing started with the Assassin's Creed preview, and ended with the review. He also noted that putting up the review was a bitch. He noticed other websites had up their reviews. The embargo was supposed to meant so that everyone could post up their reviews at the exact same time. When Hsu saw that these other reviews were being put up, he asked Ubisoft if he could put up the 1Up's. He was denied and was told he was still under embargo. The other reviews were sugar coated high score reviews.

Ubisoft had it with Ziff over a 1Up score of 7.0. In the 1Up rating system, that's classed as a good game. Not a great game, but a good game. And I know some of you may be saying that he's just out to look like a hero after the whole Gurstmann thing, and you're in the right to think that. However, I don't believe that to be true. Hsu has always been pretty open with these types of things and has talked about them on 1Up network pocasts. He didn't really name any names, but he at least talked.

Personally, even if it is to get attention, I'm fine with it. The whole situation with game companies thinking they can buy-out gaming websites and magazines is bullshit. It's practically bullying and it needs to stop.

Check out the podcast to get more deets.

P.S.

EGM's Jenn calls Princess Peach a crazy bitch near the end of the podcast.

That is why I only read Ziff Davis reviews when it comes to magazines because I know these people are smart and will give the score the game should get. I didn't like how the CAGcast tried to make it a bad thing which was just weird.

@ madninja:

The CAGcast does that all the time. Therefore, I rarely listen to the CAGcast.

That's frustrating. Luckily gaming webmasters will not have to put up with this bullshit for much long. Mainstream advertisers are taking notice in gamers and will eventually may push studios out of the way like Axe and a few others have. That's good for everybody, even though the ads will be less relevant.

That's incredible. I won't mind getting ads for Hot Pockets at all if I know that there'll be less games marketing influence.

Oh, who am I kidding? Hot Pockets are always relevant.

As I said on Podtoid, Ubisoft are being total babies about the whole thing. Frankly I'm looking forward to the day when videogame reviewers can be regarded as videogame critics, and will actually hold a respect and power that exceeds the moneybags dangled before them by capricious and temperamental publishers.

I have a ton of respect for Dan, we need more people to stand up and be honest with gamers!

moooomm... we need, more, HOT POCKETS!

somehow, the 1up network always comes out on top in my book. say what you will about egm, it's not edge, but it's the next best thing we've got. gfw just rules, and their website is the best out there. i'm a 1up whore and dream of working there one day.
