Frank Miller's Robocop
Frank Millar - Steven Grant - Juan Jose Ryp
Avatar Press

The original Robocop was fantastic. It was funny, violent, and it had some things to say about society (though not intelligently). The movie bordered on a thin line of acceptable ridiculousness, and was rather enjoyable cyberpunk flick. Robocop 2 and 3 on the other hand, were awful pieces of shit.

Everyone seems to place the blame on poor old Frank Miller for the dreadful sequels, but he says otherwise. According to him, Hollywood took his screenplay and made drastic changes. Producers of the film claimed that most Miller’s vision was “unfilmable”. Nevertheless, it left a bad taste in his mouth. Miller wasn’t too happy with the way Hollywood worked.

From 2003 to 2006 Avatar Press published nine issues of Frank Miller’s Robocop, now deemed to be the real Robocop sequels by nerds across the globe. The book follows Miller’s original Robocop 2 script, and bit off of Robocop 3 as well. He didn’t write it though. The adaptation was written by Steven Grant, but was looked over by Frank Miller.

With all that said, I don’t know if what Miller had written in his original script was worth all of the drama. The outlining story is practically the same. Detroit is still shitty, OCP still replaces the cops with a private military of criminals, and there is still a “Robocop 2” that Robocop has to battle.

I won’t tell you what differences there are between the movie and comic specifically. What I will say is that they make very little difference towards the end quality. Lewis still has no character, as well as everyone else in the book. Nothing is explored -- a generic and tired formula that begs to be ignored.

Grant does inject a bit of that satire found in the original film, and while it isn’t as good, he still manages to land a few on the bullseye. What is landing one hundred percent is the violence. Some of you could have fun with watching a woman’s burning, melting corpse slam against a wall.

The art was a tad difficult for me to review. While I can’t say it’s necessarily bad, it sure is “busy” (for lack of a better term). Too busy. Many times I’ve had to take a while to figure out what I was looking at. The detail work was somewhat impressive. In a way, it sort of channels that sense of chaos that comes from this universe’s version of Detroit. You can take it either way.

I can’t recommend this to everyone. I can’t even recommend it to most Robocop fans. You gain nothing from reading it. If you’re looking for something violent, or just want to rinse out some of what you saw in Robocop 2 and 3, then this could be for you. Everyone else should just…

(Spoilers)

I now understand why the Half-Life series has given PC gamers such a boner all these years. I've just finished with Orange Box. Beat portal and all three Half-Life games and I understand. I'm sorry, guys. I'm sorry for doubting you guys.

Now, my title isn't 100% literal. I'm not going to masturbate to pictures of a CG character. I have, however, grow attached to her. I've grown attached to her in a way you would with a character in a book or a good movie. She is my first. The first character in a game that I actually give a shit about. If you haven't beat the games, you won't understand.

The guys over at Valve know how to make character models that come alive and not just by how real they look. I'm talking about their facial animations when they are talking. I almost can't explain the joy I have for buying this game. The joy is matched that to the one I had when I picked up my copy of Halo.

As a hardcore Halo fan, I will admit right now that Half-Life 2 is a better single player game. For the simple fact of making you feel like you're in this world. For making you care for these computer generated characters.

Like, seriously, PS3 owners who haven't played this game, buy this game. Fuck Ratchet and fuck Uncharted. I know you PS3 guys. Not only are your FPS cherries not fully popped, but you, like me before, have never experienced such a wonderfully put together and story driven first person shooter.

My gaming has been so amazing this year and it hasn't even ended. Bioshock was incredible. It made you feel like you were alone in this incredible, beautiful underwater world, and when Atlas' family "died" in that submarine, I was like, "what the fuck!?" in my mind. It was a real heart string puller. Halo to me is just an amazing social game. Me and my buddies sit on that virtual couch and it's hours of games. Customs, matchmaking. It's hardcore customizable. There was that scene in Episode 2 where you see Alyx's dad die and I was whispering, "no, no, no, fuck." In my mind I was saying that, that was fucked up. I cared. I fucking cared! What? No I'm not gay!

There was a momment where I actually had a small chuckle while looking at Alyx's facial expression as Magnusson is trying his hardest to thank me for fighting off the bad gays. She gives you this look of "what the fuck?" It's great.

The weapons, the vehicles, the characters -- ah, damn. I will begin to listen to PC gamers a bit better from now on. I mean, before I thought you guys were all a bunch of elitist assholes who spent hundreds on WoW accounts. I now know that I was wrong and it was ignorant of me to think you guys were all a bunch of forum troll assholes with no friends. I now think of you guys as forum troll assholes with no friends and good tastes. Nah, I'm joshin' yous guys. Respect. That's what you fellas have earned.

Here's a drink to one of the best gaming experiences of my life. That shit is up there next to my first Mario game, Halo, and...that's it. Oh, Bioshock was great, too.

P.S.
Sorry if my spelling and grammar is all fucked. It's late, and I'm dazed from the awesomeness that was Half-Life. Ah, fuck! Can't wait for the next installment.

yeah everyone loves alyx. half life 2 is one of the few (non rpg) games where you really care for the characters.
And yeah, we're not all jerks! some of us even love halo too.

looks like the chick from knights tale.

i didn't play much of hl2 when i had the chance, so i dont really know the character well, but she can't be worse than ashley in re4.

apparently alyx shoots at stuff.

Ya that game was pretty good Valve always was on the forefront of scripted in game events. Back when FPS games were Quake and Doom. Story lines? Ha ha.

I'm still not sure if I'd call it thee best FPS game however. Definitely one of the best PC FPS games.

Alyx is no escort mission, dude. She actually kills shit. Unlike the marines in Halo 3.

*shutter*

Oh, God. I'm turning on my own game....PCness taking over...can't resist shit talking!

As far as Half-Life being the best? Not sure about that. It's on the very top, though. Very, very.

Hell yeah, Half Life 2 is definitely the best singleplayer FPS in my book. The multiplayer isn't great though, but it's still good.

It's a shame VTMB never got an Xbox port.
Oh wait...
Yes, HL2 and the episodes are examples of true greatness.
And not all of us like Wow... I can't stand MMOs. :P
