Yeah, you. The guy who was just watching the Endurance Run instead of buying a copy of
Persona 4. You're part of the problem.
Look at the sales figures from
this year's fiscal report!
August 2008 to July 2009
North America
Persona 4 (PS2) – 110,000 (150,000 expected)
Devil Survivor (DS) – 40,000 (25,000 expected)
Japan
Persona 4* (PS2) – 300,000 (180,000 expected)
Devil Summoner 2 (PS2) – 180,000 (120,000 expected)
Devil Survivor (DS) – 110,000 (100,000 expected)
Persona (PSP) – 160,000 (50,000 expected)
Growlanser (PSP) – 50,000 (40,000 expected)
FORTY THOUSAND LESS THAN EXPECTED.
Granted,
Persona 4 was released in Japan way back in July '08 and in North America only in December (between two fiscal years no less), so it's six months younger but
seriously. I was hoping for a slow burn effect like with
Valkyria Chronicles, and for all I know that game STILL didn't sell as well as Sega was hoping.
I am happy for
some things, though. You liked
Devil Survivor more than I expected, which is great, because it's easily as good as
Persona (I should write about that sometime).
Also, thankfully Japan made up for you bunch of slackers. And Jesus Christ look at the numbers for Persona PSP. That increases the chances for a Persona 2 remake, so be happy for it, jerks.
Man, I wish blog posts could properly convey
bitter glowering. And here I was thinking of putting down another cheesecake gallery. Now I think I'll just call down a few secret bosses on your ass.
Personally, I paid for/played Persona 4, but if it's not going to sell to folks, no amount of glowering can guilt them into it - nor should it.
Also tonight DEMON SOULSSS, who's with me?
Maybe the reason why P4 got less is because they looked at P3 and P3: FES and thought 'hey, maybe there is going to be a P4:FES!' :OD
And then foolishly decided to wait for a game that was never going to come out.
And when I mean 'they looked at P3...', I meant 'the potential customers looked at P3...'
Damn, I suck. :O(
But I think Stevil's right. One look at most of the frothing Persona fanboys out there is enough to convince you the games are only for whiny, Japan-obsessed emo kids. Obviously, this isn't the case, but I do think the series and its fans put off a lot of would-be players.
But after 140 hours of P3 I felt like I needed a break.
Actually, I think I'm a little more interested in how well Devil Summoner 2 did in North America, honestly.
I'd bet a lot of Persona fans that act like what you described don't even realize Persona is part of a much larger series, because they're too busy thinking they're stylish and in the know.
It was totally worth it!
Great. Just...*sigh*
If you excuse me, I'm going to go back in time to 1994 Internet and yell at everyone who didn't buy Earthbound.
Sadly, That was several months late because I'm european.
I still bought this awesome game ASAP though.
Sadly that only counts as 1 sale for Atlus.
As far as I'm concerned, when I buy a game and I go home and play it, I don't worry if someone else bought it too. I just play the game and enjoy it. Does it really matter if 40,000 didn't buy the game? As long as you sat there and the game gave you an experience, that's all that counts.
And yeah, most of my favorite games these days aren't selling. Niche' gamers must be getting poorer or something.
HYPOCRISY IS VILE HERE, SIR!
Most of my friends bitch about how every rpg is the same with the same story and the same teens so I told about the Persona games. They bitch about the dating sim elements. Then I tell them about Devil Survivor and the other SMT games they've passed over. They got 'Oh whatever'. Most people just close themselves off to these games even though all they do is bitch about the status quo.
It's just the way it is in America. Most Americans just want to kill people with guns or play music on fake instruments.
So yeah, I know how he feels. Sorry I didn't buy it, but I don't have enough time for RPGs anymore, really.
Is it still wrong?
