If you're the type of person who misses the days when flightsticks and throttles were not mere artifacts of nostalgia, you will be ENRAGED by developer Volition's latest trick, a cruel joke embedded in their Ostrich Hammer dev diary for Red Faction: Guerrilla.
See first if you can spot it: Did you see it? THE MOCKING THEY LAID UPON THEIR EARLIEST FANS, A TEASE THAT I NEARLY THOUGHT WAS TRUE? If you didn't, set your gaze the whiteboard behind art director Blane Whiteside and technical animator Will Hess, and SEE THE EXTENT OF VOLITION'S CRUELTY. Yeah, that's right. Behind Blane's head, that text: 
FS3 RELEASE DATE OMG FREESPACE 3?!! I nearly took the bait, so foolish was my hope! But then, then...I read the other text on the board: "Facts About Mars: Red/Brown Population: 0 GDP 10.00 Natural Resources: Rocks, Red Pigment" Worse still: "Possible Subtitles: Guerrilla ORANGUTAN" Fuck you, Volition. Fuck. You.

Man, a new FS game is as likely as a new Wing Commander game (fuck that noise EA put out on XBLA).

We don't know what Freespace 3 is like because there ISN'T a Freespace 3, and considering the comatose state of the space shooter at present, it's likely that there will never be.
But yes, FS2 lives in the same vein as Wing Commander (the PROPER Wing Commander, not that abomination that was shit into XBLA by EA). Just like X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Elite, Privateer, Starlancer, and yes, even Freelancer.
Id wait to see how Jumpgate Evolution does. If that game does remotely well, it may spark a resurgence in the genre.
At least lets hope it does...
