twister1988 | 6:27 PM on 06.13.2009 5 comments

A few weeks ago myself, Jackal and BAHS recorded our first ever episode of Pocketoid.Pocketoid is the first ever unofficial handheld gaming podcast from the Dtoid community. It went pretty good, however, Jackal has decided he no longer wants to be apart of Pocketoid, other than a few guest spots here and there. So tonight BAHS and I will start all over and record another episode one.

Tonights episode will feature:

Games of the Week

E3 Impressions

Other Stuff?

And of course listener questions!

Which is where you guys come in. What handheld gaming questions do you have for us? We will also mre than likely go back and re-use some of our more favorite questions we got last time.

twister1988 | 5:27 PM on 05.27.2009 22 comments

Myself, Bahs (the blogger formally known as Brecksher) and Jackal27 will be recording the very first episode of Dtoids unofficial portable gaming podcast!

We will start off this podcast very unorganized and by being confused as to what to talk about .... but we'll catch on in future episodes I promise! So tonight we would appreciate some listener questions. You can either leave them in the comments or send them to pocketoid@gmail.com . The episode should be ready to download on friday and when it is, one of us will be sure to make a c-blog with all the details. We hope you all give it a listen and tell your friends, grandparents and local shop keeps to give it a download.

So ... any questions? :D

Retro Review: Prehistoric Isle 2
twister1988 | 2:26 AM on 05.19.2009 4 comments

Have you ever seen something that was just too awesome? Like something where your like “Oh man thats so ridiculously awesome I'm not sure how to feel about it”, and then you realize that its just pure win and kick assery? Well I recently had one of those moments. We have a little classic arcade where I live called Mike and Andy's Classic Arcade and that is where I played an amazing game called Prehistoric Isle 2. I'm not really sure what the plot to Prehistoric isle 2 is or if it even has one, but it is one of the more insane games I have ever played. Heres the basic idea of the game, you are a airplane, er well I guess technically your a airplane pilot and you shoot lasers out of your airplane at dinosaurs. No you did not just imagine that, YOU SHOOT MOTHERFUCKIN' LASERS AT MOTHERFUCKIN' DINOSAURS!! You might be wondering, “well these are dinosaurs, how are they supposed to fight back against your awesome laser shooting airplane?” glad you asked. You see these are not regular dinosaurs, these dinosaurs can shoot fireballs!

So obviously the fact that I was shooting lasers at dinosaurs was the first thing I noticed about the game and after I had stopped being amazed by this and quit laughing I was ready to kill some dinosaurs. The game plays like most 2D shooters of the day, you move around the screen and shoot and try not to get hit. Thats pretty much about it. I mean yeah you've got your power ups and stuff but thats about as deep as it gets. That might sound like I'm dissing the game but you have to keep in mind, YOUR SHOOTING DINOSAURS WITH LASERS THAT COME OUT OF AIRPLANES!

Now I've never player the first Prehistoric Isle and they did not have it at the arcade unfortunately but this is how I imagine it went down. “You are Buzz McFlamethrower and you are a retired marine who has faded away into the unknowns. One day the evil dictator Schnoz Flangerydang has began cloning evil dodo birds and polar bears and has them attacking the entire world! The United States government calls you in and briefs you on it and its up to you to get in your helicopter and save the world!” On an unrelated not I just realized helicopter only has one “L” in it, I always thought it had two … huh.

So after my friend and I played this game for awhile we finally reached the final level. We had fought every kind of twister messed up dinosaur imaginable and we could only imagine what the game would throw at us for the final boss. Would it be a giant purple Spinosaurs, an huge hoard of Velociraptors, a carnivorous Brontosaurs? Nope, it was a giant fucking squid! Yeah thats right! Ultimate twist ever in a video game, you fight dinosaurs the whole time until you get to the very end, then its a giant squid. Hows that for a surprise? We eventually beat the evil squid and saved the day but by the time we had finished that game I had to take a breather and let my brain recharge before I had another round of Track and Field. I mean how did they expect me to react after playing through something that epic!?

Needless to say this was one of my much much better trips to the arcade, you just don't discover a game that intense everyday you know? I did a little research and it seems the game was also released on the Neo Geo for those of you who are interested. I would give this game 5 chainsaws out of 5. Has anyone else played this game or can anyone top this one in terms of just pure awesome and win? Next time I go to Mike and Andy's I know which game I'll be playing first!

Eulogy for Frank the Goomba
twister1988 | 3:40 PM on 04.15.2009 2 comments

So this is a eulogy I wrote for a goomba, its for my speech class so if anyone would like to tell me how to make it at least 25% less suck I would appreciate it!

Friends, Family, Loved Ones, I wish that I was coming before you today in better circumstances but alas I am not. We gather here today to mourn the loss of a great friend and a great father. Frank was one of the good ones, he never complained about the mundane nature of his work or the fact that the scenery didn’t change much but every single morning you’d find him progressively moving towards the left side of the screen. In fact, Frank might have just been the best goomba in the entire mushroom kingdom! Today is truly a dark dark day for all of goomba kind. So here I am with the unfortunate task of delivering Franks eulogy and telling you his entire great legacy.

For those of you still not in the know Frank went to work last Thursday like any other day and took his position and then slowly but surely began to move towards the left side of the screen. That’s when everything went wrong. All of a sudden that menace of our great kingdom Mario showed up and started walking towards Frank and as the two were about to make contact and Frank would have had the upper hand that dirty plumber pulled a sucker punch and jumped! That’s right he jumped right into the air and landed on poor Franks head and ended Franks life and Bonnie and Frank Jr.’s hopes of ever seeing their father again.

Frank grew up the child of a single mother and in a very poor household. His mother was a goomba of class who had been through some hard times. Frank helped out his mother as much as he could but she was a strong goomba and very supportive of Frank so he was off to school.

At Bowser University he majored in moving to the left as many of us did, he struggled with his classes but kept at it. It was only later that he found out he had a learning condition and that’s why he always wanted to move to the right in his classes. He overcame his struggles and graduated at the top of his class and his mother was there in the front row and was the proudest goomba in the whole kingdom.

After college Frank searched all over the mushroom kingdom for a job, however the kingdom had fallen on rough times and it was hard to come across a good job. As we all know the coin at that time just wasn’t worth as many points as it once was. So Frank kept at it and kept at it and was determined and he finally got a job and stage 1-2. I remember asking Frank what the toughest part of his job was and I’ll never forget what he told me, he said “The hardest part? It’s the same part that we all find so difficult, looking so pissed off all the time” And it was on that very stage that Frank me the love of his life, a beautiful goomba names Gwyneth. Frank and Gwyneth fell in love and went on to get married and form their very own family. Frank was a lucky goomba to say the least.

Frank was cut down in the prime of his life but he wouldn’t want us to all be moping around here. Frank had a passion for life and a passion for serving our great leader Bowser. Frank was the best at what he did and died doing what he loved to do. So brothers and sisters let us not be sad and depressed let us remember the good times and celebrate the life of what was truly one of the mushroom kingdoms greatest goombas ever. Like Frank once said “Life is short, you just gotta take it one step to the left at a time and live it to the fullest.”

Preview: I love Horses
twister1988 | 3:20 AM on 04.12.2009 4 comments

You know there are two things I love in this world, video games and horses. I just love horses man, I really just can't get enough of them! Haven't we all taken a moment to just stop and admire the strong loins of a well built horse? Well luckily for me and those like me the DS is about to have a game just for horse lovers. The game is coming out April 21st and is titled “I Love Horses”. Looking at the Game Stop site gets me all excited, reading the details like “ Capture the Memories: Photograph your horses and view the pictures in your photo album. “ and “Touch and Train: Interact with your horses through simple DS stylus controls!”

The game is made by a game company I am not familiar with called “Bold”. I would say their name suites them well with a bold groundbreaking game such as this. So the game is described as taking place on a ranch where you are entitled to taking care of these horses and playing through mini games. Apparently if you do well enough in said mini games you and your horse will be able to go and compete in the big tournament and win yourself a shiny trophy. As a horse lover and a gamer I honestly just can't wait! I think when I first get it I'm gonna get a big black horse and name him Tyrone and start training him for the tourney and get him even stronger and ready for all those hurdles and stuff. So who else is super excited with me for this? Just a little over one more week!

SW MO NARP and my new computer
twister1988 | 11:11 PM on 03.29.2009 13 comments

The evening started off with a simple enough question. “What exactly is a NARP?”. As we all know NARP stands for No Apparent Reason Party, but how many people do you need to qualify or a party? Well we ended up deciding 3 was enough people for a party, and thats how the very first South West Missouri Dtoid NARP started. It was a little after 11 when Brecksher showed up. After some careful consideration I decided to let him in my home. We still had one more joining us so we didn't wanna get too crazy yet, so we jumped into a game of Left 4 Dead. Not too long after that Jackal called me and it turned out he was as directions retarded as I am. So we ventured out and found him and showed him the way.

Once we were all finally back in my house and situated we decided to get down to business and ended up talking about video games for a while. Then it was time for some bullet hell. We popped in Metal Slug Anthology and started up the first Metal Slug on hard. We played all the way to the end on that one and decided to move on. Some how, I don't remember how but we ended up talking about Gurren Lagann. Brecksher and myself had never really seen it and Jackal insisted that we needed to so we took a gaming break and watched the first episode. I gotta say, that anime is pretty awesome! I haven't watched a good anime in a while (last one I watched all the way through was either Witchblade or Speed Grapher … I forget which) but this one just had something about it. I'll definatley be watching the rest of the series sometime in the near future.

The next logical step from here was obvious. Noby Noby Boy! Noby Noby Boy can only last so long though. I tried eating my own ass for a while and showed the guys how weird this game is. We then tried to play some GTA: Chinatown Wars multiplayer … however … Brecksher and I's NOT pirated copies couldn't seem to get wireless to work. From there we talked shop on some DS games and came to realize something, we all three play a ton of DS. So we have decided to start a DS podcast; speaking of which anyone have any idea for a name for it? Then finally we all raped the shit out of each other in Brawl. That was pretty fun, I love Brawl so much.

So overall I thought the first SW MO Dtoid NARP was a success. Theres lots of things I'd like to do differently next time but I had a lot of fun. Also this week I ordered a new PC. So if you guys could recommend some good PC games that I may have missed out on in the past that don't require a Internet connection to play that would be pretty cool. Here are the specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon X2 7750(2.7GHz) 64bit Dual core
4GB of RAM
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB PCI Express Video Card

It comes pre-installed with Vista Home Premium but I'm thinking I might just install XP instead.

And …... Done
