I had written yesterday about Odin Sphere and despite the really hard and below average gameplay I liked the game. Well, I played it more today and I'm hating this game more and more. I still love the sprites and all the artwork, but the difficulty is just really starting to piss me off. I really don't mind a hard game, in fact I generally welcome them, but Odin Sphere feels like it's hard just for the sake of being hard. I can generally get past the normal stages in one try, every now and then two, but the bosses and mini bosses are just hard and not fun. I don't know who designed the game, but a 30 minute mini boss fight where I still lose because of their cheap attacks isn't fun in any way at all. I get that I'm not great at this game, but when I put the game on the easiest setting, one the games says "just sit back and enjoy the story," I shouldn't have this much trouble. The difficulty on this game is just insane and it's a huge turn off. I was so excited about Odin Sphere and I want to see the rest of the art so bad but it's just not going to happen. I really wanted to enjoy this game because of the excellent art style, but it's just not fun anymore because of the difficulty. It might get picked up again in a few months but I imagine I'll play it for a few days, get mad again and leave it alone.
You know what game I felt exactly like that for the opposite reason? Super paper mario. I was playing it and enjoying it and all of a sudden I just got this overwhelming sense of boredom and realized I fucking hated that game. It wasn't enough to stop playing. I sold it.
Super Paper Mario was a bit easy, I think I was only in danger of actually maybe twice and even those times I wasn't that worried. I think you're exactly right that Super Mario is the opposite of this game but for some reason that one was able to keep me playing. I think I was able to keep playing just because the game wasn't too hard and didn't frustrate me.
With Odin Sphere I could have easily been entertained with just the story and art, but the game was just too frustrating and wasn't worth it.
I usually play my PS2 for about an hour or so before I go to bed, but I can't do it with this game because I get real frustrated and then I don't sleep. This is better reserved for monday nights. Back to Dragon Quest 8 nights for me!
I'm at the point where I'm storming the castle looking for King Odin. The mini boss I finally gave up on was the two berserkers (not even a mandatory one I believe). I finally got a healing potion recipe which helps (but no experience from it ;_;) but I have no 2x attack and still can't figure out a real good use for invis except for picking up items.
Of course I don't get to use my magic much anyways since I'm usually saving my exp to grow seeds constantly.
And just realized I do have painkillers. Those do help a lot but even with those I'm still having a difficult time and have the problem of having the space for materials for painkillers, painkillers, seeds, and food.
You need to reach a certain lvl in your weapon for the 2x (i dont remember what it is).
I used to do the same (using xp for seeds), until i spent an hour fighing a boss and lost (i think it was king odin). I decided to stop fighting him and i went back to the base and then to a past level. Since i was more powerful i got S ranking on a lot of areas so treasure chests gave out more stuff and money.
Also i leveled up my weapon until i had the 2X, after that minibosses and bosses are kinda easy with a combination of pain killers and that 2X magic.

In what part of the game are you? For me it was difficult till I got painkillers and the 2x attack.

Told ya :P
It's a decent game, it just doesn't know what the fuck it's doing with itself.
