So, I visited my local Dollar General today and found some pretty awesome DVDs for dirt cheap. I thought I'd share my finds with you guys to stress the importance of such stores.
At the low, low price of $5 each (okay, maybe they weren't actually worth that much), I got these two DVD gems:
Sonic Underground: Dr. Robotnik's Revenge
Sonic, along with his brother Manic and sister Sonia (seriously, WTF?) have to fight Dr. Robotnik with their gun-instruments (yes, musical instruments that are also magical weapons) on a quest to find their mother. Even though I'm a big a Sonic fan and have watched most of his old cartoons, I've only seen the last five minutes of an Underground episode on some crap channel at five in the morning (in which Sonic and his siblings annihilated an army of robots by ROCKING THE FUCK OUT), so I'm rather interested to see how awful a full episode is. I was tempted to buy the full series DVD at Best Buy a while back, but I think I'm okay with just three episodes, even though it looks like the cover art was created through a quick Google picture search for "Sonic" and MS Paint.
The Legend of Zelda: Ganon's Evil Tower
Well, excuuuuuuuse me Princess! Fuck, I'm not even sure why I got this.
Now, the good stuff, which was actually cheaper than the crap above, at $3 each.
Cowboy Bebop (Volume 5) I about shit my pants when I saw this there for $3. Ever since I first saw Cowboy Bebop on Adult Swim in 2001, I always wanted to buy the DVDs, though I never got around to it. Even though it only has one episode that I really like (Cowboy Funk) on it, I'm still quite pleased to have found it for so cheap. I'm sure they've marked these DVDs down since the new set with 5.1 surround sound or whatever came out, but last time I checked, the original ones cost upwards of $20.
Panda-Z: The Robonimation (Volume 1) I saw this at Best Buy once and passed over it, but I couldn't resist the adorable pandas for $3. I haven't watched it yet, but from what I understand, it's a series of five minute shorts about little pandas that pilot panda mechs. At first I thought it'd be kinda stupid and directed towards little kids like Bottle Fairy, but it says 14 and up on the back, so I have high hopes for it.
To sum things up: IF YOU HAVE A DOLLAR GENERAL/FAMILY DOLLAR/DOLLAR TREE OR ANYTHING OF THE SORT NEARBY, GO THERE AND SEE WHAT KIND OF AWESOME SHIT THEY HAVE. RIGHT NOW. Maybe you'll get lucky and find some $10 copies of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 like mine has (which I totally would have bought if I didn't already own it or couldn't get it for $2 anywhere else). :P
I used to work at a "Dollar General" when I was younger. It was the worst fucking experience of my life. The people shopping there pissed me off so fucking much. I mean maybe if they weren't so poor they would be less of a dick, but whatever.
Anyway, I have a couple of LoZ VHS tapes laying around somewhere. I haven't seen them in forever.
Seriously, hit up your local Big Lots some time. You'll have to roll up your sleeves to dig through the mountains of shitty shovelware but I can almost guarantee you'll find something you've passed over before because your wallet was a bit light or you just couldn't justify spending fifty bucks, and you'll find it for five. I got a copy of Psychonauts at my local Big Lots for THREE DOLLARS, for instance.
