First Blog: Dead.Space: is it Issac or Isaac? im too lazy..
trueb7ue | 9:06 PM on 11.03.2008 26 comments

After finishing Dead Space, i realized why i loved it so much: the horror was grand, the violence was blissful, and to top it all off Isaac was actually a guy whom i could relate to. However i did find a few things to be a bit well, annoying as all get out, which i will go into with deep detail. Anyhoo onward to the my first blog and first review...

Oh yeah and there will probably be some SPOILERS so be careful where you tread young reader.

Lets begin with the best parts of the game:

Easily Dead Space is an amazing survival horror. It has all the right makes of one:

-eerie atmosphere with a peppering of clostrophobia in certain areas.

-intelligent enemies who will stop at nothing to kill you (in interesting ways mind you), in which a simple headshot will not suffice.

-an interesting interface with a unique sense of style not yet seen in the genre.

-a good storyline that breaks the "codes" of some horror genre stereo-types, but embraces others.

-and of course, scarce weapons/ammo/health items in accordance with the overdose of enemies waiting to catch your lead with their faces (or in this case appendages)

Now that we've got the sweet sugar, lets pour some anger onto it.

one of my biggest issues with Dead Space was the quarantine rooms. To me they seemed to be just simple filler/ life ruiners. For example, after the USG Valor crashes into the Ishimura and you run into your first set of "tweakers" (they're those fast ones, i dunno they seemed like speed addicts to me), the game becomes a frustration fest. These fast buggers make life near impossible in the quarantine rooms, i mean can i get an amen from anyone who tried the game on med/hard? A room filled up with those damned preggers, sabertoothed scorpions, and those fetus freaks is tough enough. BUT NO!! lets make it a tad bit more problematic with these twitchy junkies thrown into the mixer with you. it should be a fun time had by all!! : D WRONG. OH SO WRONG. But still these rooms could have been done without i mean seriously, after the first few i was so done with these damn quarantine lockdowns. but they follow all the way to the last damned chapter. fheck.

Another thing i found to be a bit on the annoying, was how everyone in the game made poor Issac do everything. Oh excuse me, i guess he didnt have to open EVERY door or pull back a ship. CZJ (Cosmic Zombie Jew) forbid Issac would have to flip a switch or two. But seriously it was one fetch quest after another followed by a trip on the tram then the same thing again. I'm all about fetching crud for a while.. But I would rather be telling myself to get it, not some lazy bitch behind a computer or at least feel more rewarded for doing so.

Oh and the darker necromorphs, yeah they suck at life.

But other than those small things, i must say i enjoyed the game throughly.. Too bad for EA cuz i want Animal Crossing: City Folk so bad i traded it for credit. I'm an addict and i need halp.

oh and one mooore thing.. as i said in the title this is my post, so:

if it sucks- my bad, i'll try harder next time.

If it rocked your socks- my bad, i'll try harder next time.

Welcome to Dtoid, didn't know they were called "tweakers"

The fast ones are actually called "Twitchers," probably because they twitch so much. :P

I loved Dead Space. I think the reason Isaac had to do everything was because he was the only engineer. No one else knew how to do anything. :(

Also, I played the game on Hard my first time through, since you can't change the difficulty after you beat it. I died a lot.

Personally, I found the most annoying guys were those tiny little things that came out of the fat ones. They are just there to make you waste ammo.

i love the game so far, IM ON CHAPTER 7.

I dont like gravity jumping, I feel like a diver lost in the water not knowing which way is up and which is down.

other than that i think its an amazing single player game, up there with the half life series in my book

@ pedrovay2003

I knew those guys had some name I was just too lazy to go check lol.

And its possible, i often wished though that Isaac would one time just slowly put up a middle finger in sight of the camera.

It would have made my day XD

@ mattfoo

yeah the antigrav made my life miserable too, most of the time i just ended up running up walls rather than jumping to them. I am such a lazy person XD

It's probably "Isaac." That's the right way to spell that name, anyway.

I found those long spindly guys the worst, the ones that break apart into smaller monsters. Mostly because they were quite hard to kill but that damn sound they make is just horrible.

@Technophile

One shot from the Ripper takes care of a whole platoon of the little bugs. Best weapon ever.

@ stuvning:

Yeah those guys were annoying as all hale, but imo gave the best fatality if you let the head creature kill Isaac.

And yes Technophile, the ripper rids of those small snot looking annoyances with pure perfectiong ; D

btw. anyone have any luck with the contact beam or flamethrower? I used em both once and traded em back in for credits.

I used plasma cutter, pulse rifle, line gun, and ripper the whole time.

EA spell it Isaac Clarke.

Also, I am up to chapter 9 in the game, and didn't want to spoil anything so I couldn't read your blog :(

But I'll follow the love and say welcome to Destructoid!

Yea the flame thrower is really good.... when it is fully upgraded, other then that its a bit of a nancy, but alternate fire is good for getting limbs off. Contact beem is alright is your dealing with a line of them, fully charge it and let it got, will blow them all apart. But you also missed the Force Gun.... the MOST fun weapon in the game. Primary fire is a close-ish range high pressure blast, rip limbs of og most nercomorphs in one got, if not it will knock them down and then just alt-fire the force grenade to the downed guy and boom... nothing but a bloody mess :D

Oh what the hell!

I totally avoided the Force gun because it sounded like a glorified Kinesis module. If I had known it could do that I would have bought it long ago... I do have a spare 20 000 credits though... hmmm, me thinks I might buy me that gun.

Who else downloaded the limited edition jet black ps3 themed engineer suit from the PSN store? It's totally free and has level 5 armor if I remember correctly. I just downloaded it and left it in my games menu for now, I want to finish the game before I install it.

Only 2 levels left!

Oh yeah the Force Gun and the Contact Beam were awesome. I feel bad that I neglected them my first play through on Hard. Once they are fully upgraded the Force Gun is just hilarious like an air cannon and the Contact Beam I used when I was surrounded by 10 guys. You just alt-fire and fuck everyone up.

All the weapons are fun when they are fully upgraded.

Those quarantine rooms aren't so bad if you just find a nice enemy spawn free corner to stand in. The problem is there aren't, and you'll end up having bad guys FALL ON YOUR FUCKING HEAD. Seriously.

Ripper = I will cut your fucking limbs off...even if you're trapped in a quarantine room, I found that with the ripper enemies basically transformed into flesh for me to saw through. On a related note, seriously, what a great game.

Dead Space wasn't scary, though I guess it depends on your definition of fear. For me, fear is something that continues, DS mainly had shocking moments, and a tense atmosphere else.

Not like in stalker, where as soon as the sun goes down I'm too fucking scared to go outside.

I love this game, and having the same first name as the main character makes me feel more involved in the game.
