Dude, you gotta get further in then that to truly appreciate the beauty of the RTS in FFXII. Trust me, I'm a turn-based fanatic also(I still think X has the best), and I hated XII the first time I played it, but it's won me over meng.
and LO is the shit.
Too right, couldn't agree more. I liked the plot line and "side quests" to FF XII, but the battle system ruined it for me. As did the License Board system - what was that all about!? They should stick to what they know they do well, and chuck the crap that doesn't work - particularly for a first-outing on next gen.
I didn't like the battle system in XII at first, but it definitely grew on me. The Gambit system is pretty deep, when you get into it. I tend to like actual real time battles though, like Kingdom Hearts. Maybe that's just me.
Travolta - awesome banner, hilarious. But, I disagree with the post. There were some things about FFXII I didn't like, (i.e. the licensing system that basically made every character everything), but the battle system was fresh and not so tedious. I grew up playing turn-based rpgs, but as I have gotten older, it kinda drags to have to input fight a bazzillion times, not to mention random encounters that take up time with load screen etc.. Don't get me wrong, there is always a place for turn-based games (just finished FF Tactics for the umpteenth time), but I loved the XII gambit system and how it allowed for simplicity and complexity without micromanaging and kept the player moving along quickly (and it made the whole thing seem sorta realistic - no running from one-side of the screen to attack only to run back, only to sit in one place while the enemy runs over and attacks...you get the point)
I'm enjoying Lost Odyssey but I dnno if its that great.
Square tried too hard to make FF12 different from other RPGs. The battle system sucked, the License Board was terrible, and the story was a snorefest. I don't care about politics in real-life; why should I care about them in a video game?
What were they thinking with the License Board? "Hey guys, how can we ruin the Sphere Grid? I know! Let's not allow players to see the entire path they can take so that they have to spend points to see what is coming up! Oh, and having to access licenses to wear equipment won't piss people off at all."
FFX ruined the series for me.
Yes, I'm an idiot because my opinion is different than yours. Grow up, please. I just couldn't get into the battle system. Do you need me to write you a five paragraph paper explaining why?
LOL noob. wouldn't it be easier to say "I liked every offline final fantasy game except 12" or even "reasons I hate FF12"
also 12 is the only good one since 7, so you fail.
and you fail again for liking 10. 10 sucked donkey nuts
I agree that FF12's battle system sucks. I hated it, and I love old school RPG battle systems.
However, FF13's system looks like it could be a major improvment
I'd assume you've probably never played any of the Star Oceans, Radiata Stories, or any other RPG whose battle system requires reflexes better than a corpse to play. I've sat my ass in front of RPGs since the first Dragon Warrior 18 years ago, since then; straight up turn based battle systems have become BORING.
My personal beef with FFXII was the extreeeeeeeemely drawn out, boring snoozefest that they called a 'story', but at least they TRIED to innovate with the battle system. It's whining like this from the masses that keeps from any revolutionary leaps in gameplay.
Oh, and don't crow about Final Fantasy sucking when you send praise to 8 and 10, the pinnacle of when Square started to prioritize graphics over gameplay.
In all seriousness, XII's battle system let me down. It just didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game. I'm going to have to say Tactics had the best battle system (turn-based combat with charge times for special moves and whatnot), followed by a tie between VI (equip espers to learn magic) and VII (Materia. End of story.)
The gambit system was:
A. Too easy, as long as you were the right levels, you pretty much did not need any input.
B. Clunky, do to the fact that you can only really control one character at once.
But that's just my two cents.
I remember liking Star Ocean 2's battle system but sadly never finished it because I just didn't feel like grinding as hard as I needed in order to beat the last area.
I'm amazed at the overwhelmimg response to this. I appreciate the foul language from the kids too.
Mozgus, I don't know what kind of traditional RPG you've played but if you hold down X throughout the battles, you're not going to win. Nice try though.
I haven't been an RPG fan forever, Chrono Trigger started it for me on the SNES, then it went to other epic sagas like Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana, I've played all the old school FF's, but 7 was the best. The materia system was awesome, the story was great, need I say more?
As for FFX, I don't see why some of you say it's bad. I think it was a pretty good story, and it was the first one to actually have voice in it. I don't know, but regardless, it was a fun time.
Maybe I didn't give the new battle system enough time to grow on me, I was just pumped to play FF, and the new battle system threw me off.
When I think "OFFLINE" RPG's I think turn based.
hahaha hold x to win.. what an idiot.
FF12 wasn't bad because it was in real time, it was bad because the entire game seemed to be more centralized around battles and not enough around the story and plot line. I play FF and other RPG's for the story, not for the 4C7ION B477LES!
