As I have a tendency to write whatever is rolling though the jittery isles of my mind, Today I was thinking about the DS. Everyone pretty much knows that it prints money, but i was wondering why. Sure it has good games, but I was thinking there may be another reason it dominated the PSP. If you look at it purely on paper, the PSP is the better choice. Movies, music and games, all in one piece of hardware, nice screen size and some good games. Heck, one of my friends got a PSP after playing Lumines on mine, so that does say something. However, the DS sells much better and people seem to like it a great deal more than the PSP (Again just my observations, bla bla your results may vary)
I was thinking about this and I think I hit on something that may have been discussed before, but what the heck, I'm talking about it now. I'm pretty sure anyone reading this has either a DS or a PSP, so you may be able to get a visual aid out of this. The DS is about 5 inches by 2.5 inches, and the PSP is about 7x3. Two inches longer and just half a inch wider may not seem like much, but try a little experment. Grab your DS or your PSP and slide it into your pocket. I've noticed that the DS fits nicely, with only a bit of annoiance when you move around and sit, while the PSP is more difficult to carry. I'm not sure if this means much, but as long as I had a PSP, I never had it in my pocket, it was either in a cargo pocket or a backpack, and failing that, back at home.
It seems to me that while the size of it was obviously not the total factor, the original Game Boy was a massive brick and that sold tons, I think it may of been a factor, as people found it hard to carry around, it got less public viewing, and as such, less word of mouth. And that ends my random rambleing. Enjoy.

Keep in mind when talking about the size that the original DS was a phat mofo.
The DS also has a new way of playing, touching! I like to touch, and the "party" games you get with it are excellent for a portable, cooking mama can be played on a 10 min bus ride.
or when having a poo
... I think...
It also boots up fast and it's durable. Kind of a win-win for children who drop things.
I'm not sure I'd trust a child with a PSP.
Another bad thing that the PSP gets beat down hard on is battery life. The DS battery last forever. PSP... not so much.
When I look at PSP games it's all like "lulz, still nothin truly good" whereas my DS I can pick out at least 10 titles off the top of my head and that's without even thinking!
You are right, it is about the games! And look at the wide variety of games available for the DS (also consider the wide variety of control methods due to the touch screen and Microphone). Not to mention that the Nintendo brand is gold when it comes to portables. That is one thing they never got wrong.
the DS is automatically better designed... aesthetically and with portability in mind, well... @ least the DS lite is... the stylus control proved to be more than a gimmick with games like metroid prime hunters and dementium: the ward...
the movies on the PSP are an eye strain, especially while on a bus and I bought the sleave for it so when i want to put it in my pocket, its really bulky altogether... Mind you that I dont wear nut-hugglingly tight clothing... the removeable memory and it was an awesome MP3 player and picture storing device, the browser is also bearably slow but with all that added, the games feel like an afterthought... the analog 'slider' thing is genius though
The DS design is well thought out, with the original I have or the Lite. Even when many bitched about its cosmetics, its guts speak for themselves. The battery life is superb. I've had occasions where I've left my DS on stand by for over 24hrs, and it still has power left to play. Not even iPod or PSP got that right, and frankly that's quite shocking, considering how everyone raves about them.
DS games are its real strength though. While they might not be arcade/console perfect like PSP, DS has to hit the creative sweet spot more to do well. Ouendan, Trauma Center, these wouldn't work well anywhere else (apart from Wii perhaps).
I'm glad I own both PSP and DS as they have good games, even if you have to hunt for them. I will upgrade to a DS Lite, as the screen on it is so much better. Both are also great for imports too.
