"Movies, music and games, all in one piece of hardware" = DS + R4
Keep in mind when talking about the size that the original DS was a phat mofo.
The DS also has a new way of playing, touching! I like to touch, and the "party" games you get with it are excellent for a portable, cooking mama can be played on a 10 min bus ride.
or when having a poo
I think the PSP was doing better than the original design of the DS. The DS "crazy-ness" didn't start until the re-designed DS Lite came out.
... I think...
It's pretty much the games. It has mass appeal just like the Wii. That's how it's won. That and it's cheaper than the PSP. People like cheap and they like a broad selection of games.
It also boots up fast and it's durable. Kind of a win-win for children who drop things.
I'm not sure I'd trust a child with a PSP.
Plus the other thing that might have killed the PSP was the fact that most games were already out on the PS2. I don't think they had any thing orginal from what i can recall. I don't have a PSP so correct me if i am wrong, but i am just thinking when it first came out maybe even going into the first couple of years it had the same games as your PS2..
There were a lot of ports. But I guess that's what Sony thought people wanted. Who wouldn't want a last-generation console as a handheld? At least those of us who are gamers.
Another bad thing that the PSP gets beat down hard on is battery life. The DS battery last forever. PSP... not so much.
O yea to add to this list of what went wrong. I for one can at least say that the advertising for the Psp went south. THe first commerical was cool then came the fucked rat looking rabbit creatures and things gots ugly for the PSP advertisement.
DS games have shown more innovation, embraced new gameplay mechanics more than PSP. Okay, I do like LocoRoco but it's DS all teh way ftw.
When I look at PSP games it's all like "lulz, still nothin truly good" whereas my DS I can pick out at least 10 titles off the top of my head and that's without even thinking!
I you like games that don't involve petting dogs, cooking shit or brain training crap buy a PSP. Psp design is 10x more sexier.
Is that Jack and another unintelligent post I hear there? Once again your complete lack of knowledge in this department shines through. Why using your logic the PSP is only good for half-assed PS2 ports, but I'm sure that's just me being a little judgemental.
As for the aesthetics being sexier it's in the eye of the beholder. The DS, I feel, benefits from the fold over design, thus ensuring that screen scratches are easily kept to a minimum.
@bhive01:
You are right, it is about the games! And look at the wide variety of games available for the DS (also consider the wide variety of control methods due to the touch screen and Microphone). Not to mention that the Nintendo brand is gold when it comes to portables. That is one thing they never got wrong.
Technically the Virtual Boy was a "portable." Technically.
Very true @ dan
the DS is automatically better designed... aesthetically and with portability in mind, well... @ least the DS lite is... the stylus control proved to be more than a gimmick with games like metroid prime hunters and dementium: the ward...
the movies on the PSP are an eye strain, especially while on a bus and I bought the sleave for it so when i want to put it in my pocket, its really bulky altogether... Mind you that I dont wear nut-hugglingly tight clothing... the removeable memory and it was an awesome MP3 player and picture storing device, the browser is also bearably slow but with all that added, the games feel like an afterthought... the analog 'slider' thing is genius though
Well when the Lite came out was also about the time all of the really good games started rolling out too.
I own both a DS Brick and original PSP. I understand what you are saying. I do use my PSP to watch anime on the move, besides the games, as its perfect for that. I always live in fear of that lovely screen getting damaged more. Mine has a crack in it, which doesn't obscure my viewing, however its still annoying.
The DS design is well thought out, with the original I have or the Lite. Even when many bitched about its cosmetics, its guts speak for themselves. The battery life is superb. I've had occasions where I've left my DS on stand by for over 24hrs, and it still has power left to play. Not even iPod or PSP got that right, and frankly that's quite shocking, considering how everyone raves about them.
DS games are its real strength though. While they might not be arcade/console perfect like PSP, DS has to hit the creative sweet spot more to do well. Ouendan, Trauma Center, these wouldn't work well anywhere else (apart from Wii perhaps).
I'm glad I own both PSP and DS as they have good games, even if you have to hunt for them. I will upgrade to a DS Lite, as the screen on it is so much better. Both are also great for imports too.
