How to rate The Orange Box
tom90deg | 2:46 AM on 12.11.2007 10 comments

This is a bit of a puzzle I've been thinking over when I saw the list of top 10 games released this year. I saw The Orange Box rated near the top on a few lists, and that got me thinking. How can you rate The Orange Box? If you think about it, it's basicaly rateing 5 games. Half Life 2, Ep. 1 and 2, Portal, and Team Fortress Two. Why are they lumping all the games together?

The more cynical part of me is saying that's because they don't want more than one game to take over the lists, like having Portal, TF2 and Episode 2 all on a top ten list. I think you have to break up the games though. I mean, by saying that The Orange Box is number 2 on the top ten list, you're saying that Half Life 2 is also number two. How does that make sense? I mean, could'nt I bundle, say, Crappy Game X in with Awesome Game Y into Boxed Set Z, and then say that Crappy game X is number 2 on the list of games?

I think the reason why is because the only physical commercial package available to get TF2, Ep.2 and Portal in is the Orange Box. Sure you can buy them individually on Steam, but not at retailers yet and I think that's what counts. Besides, for the content you get when you buy the 'Orange Box', it's a steal! And that's what makes the Orange Box the 'Orange Box'.

Besides, we've had game collections released before. But while most of these are old arcade games stuffed onto a disc, the Orange Box is three new games and two old games put together to give people an amazing look at Valve's hard work over the past few years. I don't think it's about trying to keep slots open on top 10 lists, but more about the fact that it's sold as an all-in-one.

True, but one point I must make is that Peggle Extreme is included in the orange box as well. That means that Peggle Extreme is number two on the list of the top ten games released this year. Of course, it may be a older game, you could make that argument. I'm not saying that the orange box is a bad thing, I personaly love it, it's just curious how no lists are saying, for example, Portal, or Team Fortress 2 on the list of top ten games.

Look at it this way : games are a commodity, games are commercial. When games are rated, it's statement of whether or not you should spend your money on it (as opposed to whether or not it's artistically important, for example). Thus, when we make comparisons, what we're really saying is "it'd be more worthwhile to buy this game instead of this one."

Thus, for your buck, Orange Box is a great deal because you get 5 great games for the price of 1. It's not which game is better, per se, but which game compared to its monetary value.

Fine, my new top five list:

1. Half Life 2
2. Team Fortress 2
3. Portal
4. Episode 2
5. Episode 1

Happy?

None of the games on Orange Box suck, HL2 and all the episodes ar ethe best FPS experinces around (HL2 is the best shooter, in my opinon), portal is slightly short, but still new and amazing, and TF2 is probably the only classbased console shooter right now thats any good.

Heh, You seem to be taking my question in somewhat the wrong way. I'm in no way saying that the Orange Box dosn't deserver to be in number 2, but the "Box" nature of it is a odd way to rate it. It's like...I love Young Frankenstien. I'd rate that very high on my list of movies. However, it's (lets say) only for sale in a large box set of Mel Brooks Movies. Would you rate the whole box, or the movies individually?

don't question the orange box, or you'll be paying $39.95 for half life 2, $19.99 for ep1, ep2, portal, tf2.

never question the orange box.

I rate it as one game because I spent the same $60 on Orange Box that I spent on Uncharted and Mass Effect.

I think you have to rate each piece seperately

you rate it just like you rate Wii Sports or any other game that has multiple games within it.
