A Positive Experience with Gamestop?
tigerfangred91 | 8:43 PM on 04.26.2009 10 comments

Yes.

I traded in a few (read: 9 or so) games and a lot of them were utter crap to be honest. A few were DS games, 4 were Wii games, and a couple 360 games. However, when the kind Gamestop employee informed me that I now had $109.00 trade-in credit, I was surprised. I don't know if any of you ever had this problem, but back in the day of EB Games I never got decent trade-in credit. I'm not really sure if this is a lucky fluke, or if Gamestop really is trying to help out gamers, but either way I'm pretty happy about it.

Anyways, with that $109 credit, I got three games that I am terribly embarrassed to admit that I hadn't owned until now: Fallout 3, Bioshock, and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.

Fallout 3 is an obvious choice if you have the money and have never played it. I'm about 6 hours in right now and am having an absolute blast. The combat is just plain fun, and the scarcity of basic necessities really puts you in the mood that Bethesda wanted to create. If I had a complaint this early in the game, I'd have to say that the whole underground metro system parts are a bit annoying and repetitive. That's a small complaint though, because I'm sure the rest of the game has different environments.

On to Bioshock. I'm about 5 hours into this gem right now, and it's a terrific game. One of the best things I noticed about it is that it's one of the only games I've ever played where I was able to be immersed and actually scared for my life. There were multiple times when I see a "scary-as-shit" hallway or room, and I honestly did not want to go in them. But I keep going because of curiosity. Also, the fact that splicers will chatter and even taunt you really adds to the experience. Besides all that, Bioshock has the best ambient noise in any videogame I have ever played. It really is terrifying to hear your enemies talking about killing you and telling you not to hide from them. Hell, one splicer who I could only hear told me "Don't hide. I mean you no harm!". Intense.

Now Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway is a less obvious choice. It got average reviews, and didn't really break any new ground for the series. However, I have been a huge fan of the series, and it's one of the only series where I have cared about the characters (Legget anyone?) and continued to care throughout each one of the games. The cut-scenes in Hell's Highway are well-done, and while some are long, if you care about the story at all then you will want to watch them. I'm currently on chapter 5 of the campaign, and really enjoying it.

Regardless, I'm really happy that I was able to get that amount of money for a couple of games. Does anyone else have any positive game-trading experiences?

Simple answer:
People who say Gamestop flatout sucks to ever trade-in games are morons.

You have to use the system as much as you can. Will Amazon give me %20 more credit on select games in the form of an Amazon gift card? Then I'll sell a few games to Amazon.

Does Gamestop have deals were if you trade in 3-4 games at once you get an extra %20? Sure, then I'll call the store, see how much my games are worth, then trade them in if they're worth it. Plus, it's super-easy, and I don't have to mail anything away, and with thousands of convenient locations, it's most likely closer than a bunch of other stores.

Is Gamestop/FuncoLand/Play N Trade/Amazon.com going to rip me off when I try and trade in a select game? I'll sell it my own off craigs list or half.com. No way I'll trade anything in Gamestop if they offer me less than a dollar or so (and they do, a lot).

Moral of the story is; do whatever will get you more money. If you play the system, you'll get the most out of it every time. Hating one middle-man isn't going to get you anywhere. I've had good, and bad trade-in experiences in just about every retail outlet known to man.

As a rule I don't trade games in, I like to keep them should I wish to play them later.

Magnalon says:

Gamestop flatout sucks for trading in games for the very reason you said yourself; a lot of the time they give you pennies on the dollar.

Most people, especially younger children or their ignorant parents DO NOT play the system or do the extra leg-work in order to get the most money for their games. I've witnessed countless occasions where children fork over a pile of games for an insulting pay-out. Some are rightly pissed off, sometimes their parents get pissed off and much to my amusement, yell at their children in front of the store for being so dumb...

However, this is as much the game owner's problem as it is Gamestop's, and you can't really expect a corporation like Gamestop to not simply rip off the flood of morons who are beating down their doors in order to trade in their games for basically nothing.

tigerfangred91, I'm glad you feel like you got a good deal tigerfangred91, but this most certainly isn't the norm when dealing with Gamestop. Magnalon goes out of his way to be a smart consumer, most people don't.

Pretty they had a trade more for higher %, I look taking advantage of these deals, I once traded a truckload of stuff when they where doing it and I got like 500 bucks, its the reason I own a 360 now.

@Grimspoon
Haha very true! I encourage everyone to make smart decisions when selling back games you no longer want. I hope one day I don't see as many teens/tweens that are slaves to Gamestop. It makes me SICK when I hear all these young kids go "yea I beat this game, it sucks. I'm going to trade it into Gamestop the next day for $30." WHY?!

@Mr. Kite
Yea I'm kicking myself for trading some games in as a kid, but as a general rule now, I only trade in games I get for presents, and hate.

People who bitch about Gamestop just piss me off. No matter where you trade places in you are never going to get fair value for them. Ever. Period. I think alot of people bash Gamestop because it's the biggest name and thus being the biggest is somehow bad.

If I have a game that's only going to give me 5 dollars for trade in value, you know what? It was probably a shitty game, or its just fucking old. The only 'bad deal' I've ever gotten from my Gamestop here in town is when I traded in my Gamecube... however, I was trading in my Gamecube which instantly makes any bad deal a good deal.

If I'm not mistaken (or so the employees have been telling me) at Gamestop you can bring a game back within 7 days if you don't like it. I've never taken advantage of this, and I'm not really sure how it works, because there's got to be a catch, but it still seems interesting.

@Mr. Kite
I used to not trade in games. Now I do because I'm strapped for cash, but I try and think "Will I regret trading this game in one day?".
