Disaster: Day of Crisis Impressions and SUPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT
theredpepperofdoom | 10:40 PM on 02.27.2009 4 comments

If you are looking for a violent action game in the likes of Gears of War, Disaster: Day of Crisis is not for you.
If, however, you are looking for an action game with a ridiculous plot line and willing to import, then Disaster: Day of Crisis is for you.

If you are the latter, you can read some more. I won't bite.

Before I start, let me get some background on this game: It's developed by Monolith Soft, the same guys who did the Xenosaga series and the upcoming Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier for the DS. This is their first action game as well as their first WIi game and was one of the first Wii games announced. It was just released last year in Japan and Europe, but not in the US for some reason.

But, anyways, onto the game. The main plot is that a some unit of the US Army named SURGE has gone rogue and siezed some nukes while a bunch of disasters are happening in a place that looks like either NYC or San Francisco, including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and landslides. You, Raymond Bryce, has to lead a one man crusade against SURGE, get the nukes and save the day.
However, SURGE has taken hostages, including the sister of the buddy of Raymond when he was in some rescue team who fell off a volcano. He was also the guy Chad was talking about on RetroforceGO!, who touches your butt and stuff.

The farther you get into the game, the more ridiculous the story gets. The reason SURGE went rogue was because they were double-crossed by the US and then a volcano erupts and kills the entire team. All at once. Then you go to a total ripoff of New Orleans and fight a mech that was designed to hold nukes. I tried to find a picture of the mech, but I couldn't, so you have to see it for yourself.

But that's enough of the plot. The game controls surprisingly well for a Wii game most of the time and there is very little waggle. Most of the game is divided into 4 parts: walking around, shooting stuff, driving and minigames. The walking around is the normal walking around and doing stuff, the shooting bits are pretty much the same as you would see in a game like Time Crisis or Ghost Squad, the driving is standard driving and the minigames are what make the game different than Earth Defense Force.

When I say "minigames", I mean the bits where you go around and rescue people from fires, perform CPR do stuff that Red Cross would do. They are pretty much minigames because they are in the game but small bits. Some of them are actually interesting like the CPR one, where you press the A button in time to the beat or something like that. But you get points so you can buy shotguns and assault rifles, so yay.

There is also a somewhat larger than normal selection of guns in Disaster: Day of Crisis. You can carry up to 4 weapons and buy shotguns, handguns, assault rifles and get secret weapons buy finding an old black guy somewhere around the areas in the game. I played the game with a shotgun, assault rifle an handgun and never had any problems. Well, except for the mech. Which was destroyed by my handgun.

You can also increase your skill attributes, and they do increase your abilities at doing stuff in the combat modes, except for strength. It is expensive and a total waste of your skill points that you spent so much time doing by rescuing people. But that part gives you something to spend your points on, so yay.

QTEs are also in Disaster, and boy do they show. Some of the stuff is just you shaking your Wiimote and Nunchuck as fast as you can, but other times it's just "ZOMG PRESS A NOT TO DIE" stuff. Usually to run away from a giant wave from a tsunami or esacpe some enemy fire or punch the main bad guy in the face. But come on, Disaster is an action game. What did you expect?

The last thing I want to point out in the gameplay aspect is the alternate ending, because it is terrible. But it is actually quite funny because it has nothing to do with the game at all. Yes, it is another disaster but it doesn't involve nukes or anything.
It simply is the President being informed that all of mankind will be destroyed by a meteorite coming to Earth.
Yes, that is real.

Ever want to see Disaster come to the States? Well, Disaster has been a disaster in sales in Japan and Europe. It only sold about 13,000 copies in Japan on the first day, and about 21,000 in the first week. And Meat-Man said he would "consider it". It appears as though Disaster may suffer the same way with Mother-although this time because of laziness to change a couple words.

But then again, maybe it is a bad idea to bring it over. A lot of people expect Disaster: Day of Crisis to be a dark, gritty game with violence and guns and titties and halos and stuff. But it is nowhere near that.
It's Earth Defense Force 2012 ported to the Wii. But nothing like Earth Defense Force 2012 in the process.
