Failure to Move
themizarkshow | 3:20 PM on 12.17.2010 9 comments

After gathering all my birthday money, I decided it was time to get a Playstation Move. Since I already own the the PS Eye, the only thing I needed was the glowing, vibrating, bulbous controller, so I went down the street to the local GameStop with $50 set aside for just that. The only kink in my plan was that I hadn’t decided what game to buy with it.

So, upon walking through their doors I quickly weaved through customers and racks of holiday sales to the PS3 section in the back of the store where I scouted out games with the blue "Move Compatible" stickers on them. Sports Champions was bundled with the $100 pack I didn’t need, and was the obvious pick since its a demo of different things you can do with the controller… but I already have WiiSports and it’s Plussed counterpart, so I really didn’t want to spend more money on sports stuff (especially since I don’t care for sports in the first place). There were several games with motion controls recently tacked on, but I owned several of them and couldn’t imagine the experience being any better than a traditional controller. And there were a few casual games that looked… mediocre... at best. And that’s where my purchase came to a grinding hault.

There wasn’t a single game that demanded my purchase of the Move. Here it is, almost three months after the devices launch, and right in the prime Holiday buying season, and Sony has practically left their new motion controller to die among first party Wii titles and the super hyped launch of Microsoft's Kinect (which also has nothing I'm interested in playing and which I refuse to spend money on).

So, instead of wasting my money on a glowing, vibrating motion controller that would sit ignored and collecting dust under my TV, I picked up three used GameCube games for $15 and went home to put them in my Wii, where I wouldn’t even use it’s motion controls to play them.

This isn't to say that I want to see the Move and Kinect fail, because I'd love to see them do well. After all, it's always in our best interest to see systems/games/peripherals succeed; the better they are/do, the more fun we have and the more money developers and publishers have to make more great stuff. But when you put out a new peripheral that can't even compete with games from a last-gen system three months after its launch (and during the holiday buzz), you might have pushed it out the door a little early.

(If you know of good Move games, please let me know in the comments. I'm still itching to pick one up for some reason. Maybe I hate money?)

No clue about these Move/Kinect games. I figure I'll give the game makers a year or so to figure out the hardware and make a game that really utilizes the tech in an interesting way then I'll look into it.

It's going to take awhile before we start seeing games for the Move and Kinect that are built from the ground up for gamers like us. Both Sony and Microsoft seem to be going after that easy casual gamer money. Between the Move and Kinect there is exactly one game I'm interested in, Dance Central.

@Occams:
Yeah, I figure this time next year we'll have some good stuff to play. I just don't wanna wait that long. It's a shiny new peripheral and I wants it now. lol

@DaedHead8:
Dance Central intrigues me too, but I don't think I have the space for it currently. I think I'm set pretty fine for the Move, but I'd need to rearrange for Kinect. If I could do that via Animal Crossing I'd do it... but moving and cleaning stuff in real life? No thanks.

Yeah I have just over 6 feet between me and my TV so I don't think I'll be investing in Kinect any time soon. I know that 6 feet is enough for single player games, but I would be basically right on top of my couch, making it not so easy to play.

First of all you have way too much time on your hand to write a post that long about a non issue. You should know that any console or new piece of gaming tech will take at least a year before we start to see multiple high quality games, also sports champion is nothing at all like wii sports. I wouldn't even put those two games in the same catageven put them in the same category.

I heard Mag was pretty cool with Move but in general, yeah. It's not for you right now and forcing yourself into the purchase will only lead to resentment.

I agree! I'd love to see a good dance game for the move, but aside from Singstar Dance I haven't really seen any. They did the same thing with the PS2 Eyetoy... great concept but no follow through with some really good games.

Until there's a great game worth buying the Move for... I'll continue to play Groove using my old Eyetoy when I get the urge for some exercise. :(

@sheppy:
I've got MAG and have been meaning to try out the new expansions. Maybe I'll pick up a Move after xmas and see how it does with that.

@Elsa:
Definitely agree about the EyeToy (and dance title). I messed around with it on a friends PS2 but never felt the need to buy it myself. I figured the PS Eye I got with the PS3 was just gonna follow that route of uselessness, but am hoping the Move does something with it that's worth having collected two years worth of dust.
