I'm not a big fan of first person shooters. The last year I really sat down and played more than one of them was in 2006 after the 360 came out and my only choices I had were Call of Duty 2 and other gun-fests. Since then, I've missed a ton of the biggest releases in the genre and committed the no-doubt criminal action of having never played more than a little of the CoD4 single player campaign. On top of this I bear the treacherous cross that is fanboyism, the omnipresent voice in the back of my head chanting "Sony" with such fervor that I wake shaking in the night. Clearly the following impressions should be taken with a grain of salt.
I really enjoyed the Killzone 2 demo. Nine times out of ten I fall under the umbrella of the
tourist. When a game is beautiful I take notice and that's a feature that has been given no lack of attention in Killzone 2.
But I've seen pretty graphics many times. Gears of War 2 is gorgeous. Comparing screenshots it could be argued that it's as pretty as Killzone. But it's Killzone in motion that gives it an edge I don't think other games have, within the genre or otherwise.
Though at any time there are no more than four of your own squad members and a half-dozen enemies, I always felt I was on a massive battlefield. Shots were fired and dust was kicked up in such a way that I had no idea what was going on. Allies and enemies alike would run past me, fall to the ground, shout unintelligible battlecries and fall in a haze behind my blood-stained vision. Characters and environment alike feel like they are constantly in motion and chaos. Lighting is
dynamic, an addition that more games need to make since Dead Space showed off the affect on a player's psyche it could have. As standard as the game is from a run and gun (or in this case, stop and pop) perspective, the immersion factor is through the roof.
Good graphics and animation don't make a good game. But much like gamers are sometimes devided between those focussed on skill and those on tourism, games come in multiple categories too. Approached as a "game" Killzone 2 might be everything we've seen before in a pretty but ultimately redundant package. As an "experience" it's like nothing ever before it. If you, like me, are a player who likes to throw themselves into a game and hope that it will draw you in even furthur, I think Killzone is for you.
While it is beautiful in motion, I thought the controls were a little "sluggish." To be honest all the FPS games on the PS3 feel a bit sluggish. I think it's way they accelerate while turning. If you move the stick a little it moves to slow, but if you move the stick just past the halfway mark it turns to fast. I usually have to play with the sensitivity for a half hour or more to get it to feel "tight." Does that make sense?
THEN WHY IN THE FUCK ARE YOU REVIEWING IT THEN? Killzone 2 is a hardcore FPS. Its not for pussy ass punk mother fuckers that only like to play sissy ass games with rainbows and butterflies.
I play FPS. I have played them all. I would be a good person to review Killzon since I have a well-rounded perspective on the FPS genre. Also, stop comparing GoW2 to Killzone. The only thing they have in common is that they both have guns.
I though Killzone 2's controls were sluggish and odd. I modified the controls so that it would have the "COD" control scheme. After that it felt much better. What really pisses me off about you is that you said that "your not a big fan of FPS". It seems as if you already had a negative perspective on Killzone 2 before you even loaded up the demo so piss off.
I'm reviewing it because although I don't play every single FPS that comes out, I play some and have genuinely enjoyed a few such experiences, like Half Life 2. I do like rainbows and butterflies, though.
This wasn't a review, only impressions. I only compared GoW2 to Killzone in terms of graphics.
In regards to the controls, I didn't even really discuss them. The focus of my experience with Killzone was the immersion factor and I actually found the controls quite passable if unfamiliar. Finally, though you're correct in assuming I did not have high expectations for the game I came away giving the game praise, even saying I really liked it. What I said in regards to the technical prowess of the games mechanics was only in reference to what others have been saying in address to the hardcore shooting fanbase you yourself belong to.
Now, ice cream?
Fanboy much? Seriously calm down. "I play FPS. I have played them all." Really? Every single FPS ever released?
Allow me to quote Adam Sessler. "You delusional f*ck."
You've just painted yourself in the image of everything that is wrong with fanboys and gamers in general. Go die.
Man, that felt good. Look, sorry to come off as a fanboy. Its just the way you started your blog. "I'm not a big fan of first person shooters." I makes it seem like you don't have a well rounded perspective on FPS games. If that line wasn't put in your blog I wouldn't have spouted my stupid rant.
Im not a big fan of sport games so im not going to give my impressions on Madden 10 or NBA Live 10 since I have existing negative emotions about the genre. See what I mean?
Sorry for the asshole rant
"Go die."
You've just painted yourself in the image of everything that is wrong with the internet and faceless avatars in general. Go live.
YAY! Does this mean I get to go see the sun again?!?
God, you are a sexy beast.
It makes no since to either give a review or impression on a game when you have pre-existing emotions that could cloud your judgement on what is good and what is bad with a game/demo.
Another example:
Hey guys! Im going to give you my impressions on the Madden 10 demo, but just to let you know, Im not a fan of football, in fact I hate it, but for some odd ass reason, I want to let you know how I felt. /sarcasm
I agree with thefil agreeing with thefil.
We definitely need more games with rainbows and butterflies.
Normally, I'm not really a fan of FPS's (though I've enjoyed Resistance 2 co-op) either but I did happen to d/l the KZ2 demo as well. I think I was impressed by the sound the most..
I like reading people's perspectives on genres that they don't normally play. It's good to have the view of an outsider because sometimes I am in that same position.
Unless, you are Jack of No Trades :)
We don't need no water. Let the motherfucker burn.
Let people who arent a fan of a specific genre share their opinion about it as well. Isnt a free-thinking world where people are free to share their opinion what we ultimately want? Besides, just because you're not a fan of a genre, doesnt mean you're clueless about it. I'm not a fan of JRPG games, but I've played many of them, and there are a couple of them that I love, like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound!
