ROCK BAND DLC IS 1520 MS POINTS????
thebza | 12:30 PM on 06.13.2008 12 comments

that's right i just read from multiple sources that the pixies album "doolittle" is the next full album to be released as DLC for rock band... and it's going to cost 1520 MS Points. that's $19.00!!!!

i can buy the real album for 8 or 9, what's the deal here? i've been okay with the price of rock band dlc so far, i even get songs from bands i don't like just so i can maintain a "complete" collection, but nineteen dollars is ridiculous, the MAX for a full album should be $10-12..

here's an idea for harmonix... as an incentive for people to purchase DLC, how about including the actual MP3s for download to an iPod or something similar? i mean we're already paying for the master tracks, can't you offer them in a different format? it shouldn't be too hard i wouldn't think.. then i could justify plopping down a twenty on an albums worth of dlc... knowing i could also enjoy the songs away from the console would be a great addition. what do you thinks peoples?

If that's true, it wouldn't surpise me - as more albums come out with more than 8 or 9 tracks on them prices are gonna go up.

They're already $2 a song right now, take that and multiply it by 11 and you're looking at $22 for one album that you can play guitar, bass, drums, and vocals.

It sucks but I don't see a way around it.

Actually Butmac, there's 14 songs on the track list. So 14x2 equals $28. Your getting an eleven dollar savings by buying the album instead of $2 per track. Also, like Butmac said, cand you actually participate in the music with that "$8 or $9" album? If you're just wanting to listen to the music, I suggest another game. It takes time and money to develop these songs for gameplay, and considering you get four instruments worth, I think $19 for 14 songs is a deal.

With that said, I've never listened to the Pixies, so I'll have to check them out to see if I'm going to get it.

I would happily pay that much for a grateful dead album but the pixies? I'm not so sure.

What Butmac & Usedtabe said. $20 for 14 songs on Rock Band is a fucking deal. If they were JUST mp3s than $10-$12 for an album makes sense but this is a video game that you interact with. I'd love for it to be cheaper, but in all honesty, I think the value of the songs fit the price.

yeah and i don't know where you buy albums, but a new cd is usually around $12 (not a digital copy). i think the pricing is ok.

This seems more like a reactionary blog to the actual price while not considering the content. You saw "1520ps=$19 OMG" instead of what you are actually paying for. You cannot expect current MP3 prices for songs with gamelplay, it makes no logical sense. If you just wish it was $10-12 because that's what you want it to be, then again, a different game might be in your future.

why is this album more than the other 2 (judas priest and the cars)? don't tell me there's more tracks, the pixies songs are mostly very short in length. and i'm saying why couldn't we get an MP3 download with our DLC purchase, that would make it a better value since harmonix already paid for licensing and everything else.

$19 is a lot for any video game, that's like an accessory.. you figure rock band is $150 new, then a $20 album, that's almost 15% of the total price of the game! and that's just a digital download, nothing was manufactured or shipped or anything!

Actually it IS the number of tracks. Even if we're talking about the iTunes model, a song on iTunes costs 99 cents whether it's 30 seconds long or 10 minutes long. That's just the standard that's been set (by everyone).

I know once it's added up $20 seems like a lot to pay for extra songs but at $2 a song (which I think is fair for a Rock Band song (not a GH song)), it's not that bad at all. At least you have the choice to pick and choose if you only want certain ones.

@The bza: Nothing may have been shipped, but something was "manufactured", in a sense. All of those songs had to be broken down on a note-by-note basis, then put back together with 4 intrument gameplay functionality. Then tested, re-tested, etc. I imagine there are some sort of costs associated with distribution also. So, you have licensing fees(including legal fees), development man-hours, and possible distribution costs. That + a % for profit is where we get to nineteen dollars for 14 songs.

I agree it would be nice to get a Mp3 too, but it's not something that has to happen, as fans of this will buy regardless. The original cost of the game is not really a point of basis, considering anything after is optional. You don't "need" these songs to play the game. Another way to look at it is the RB disc alone came with around 50+ songs, and it retails for $60. Including a discount, these prices align on a per song basis if they were to just release another disc full of songs.

I'm content with only Wave of Mutaliation.

I don't think it's that unreasonable, honestly. New albums are definitely like $14-$15 anyway. Since you are getting multiple instrument gameplay, $19 really isn't thievery. If this were guitar hero, I'd think otherwise. Besides, I'm with Gynecologist Cobra, Wave of Mutilation is their only good song, IMO.

Yeah, I don’t think that $19 for 14 songs is unreasonable at all, especially considering that it’s a nine-dollar savings over buying each track individually.
