The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess was the very first game I bought for my Wii way back in February of '07.. I've been playing it on and off ever since then. The reason? A lot of times when I play rpg-style games I take a break either because some new game has come out, or I just have other stuff going on in real life. I always HATE coming back to these games because I can never remember where I was when I left off or what my current quest is. I like when a game gives you a reminder to jog your memory... Z:TP was horrible at this. You ask Midna, your little sidekick for advice and she'll say something along the lines of, 'Hurry we have to save the princess/Banish the evil (etc)'.. it's like, 'No shit? Really? Thanks for being so helpful!'
I *REALLY* hate having to resort to guides when I play a game.. Maybe I'll do it if I'm absolutely stuck or after I beat the game to find the hidden things I may have missed my first time through. I found that with Z:TP I had to use the guide almost everytime I played.. it makes me feel like I'm cheating myself out of crucial gameplay experience.
Since I bought my Wii I've bought tons of games : Resident Evil 4 (beat it), Boom Blox (play with my wife), etc.. then i have Okami (never played), No More Heroes (never played), Zack and Wiki, I can go on and on (I own 16 wii games, not counting VC titles)... I've neglected ALL of them because I couldn't bring myself to start a new game when I haven't even finished Zelda.. so I'd start playing Zelda, get frustrated/bored, then move on to my X360 or PS3.
Well I finally decided to buckle down and finish Zelda... and with IGN's guide (which is like the number 2 guide of all time on their site.. gee I wonder why? Because the game stinks without one, you'll go crazy!!) I finally beat it today.
And honestly, it felt more like a chore than fun.. I blew through GTA4, Lego Indy, all kinds of games... and had a good time doing it. With no mandatory guide. At least in GTA4 when I'd forget what I was doing I'd get tips on what to do next, or sometimes the game would tell me via my in-game cell phone... kudos to them for keeping the "flow" of the game rolling throughout.
I hate to say it but I don't think i enjoyed Zelda:TP very much.. and looking at all the rating sites and seeing its universal high score, I wonder if maybe it's not Zelda, but something is wrong with me? I dunno..
Anyone else have this experience or something like it? Maybe not with Zelda but another highly touted game?

I'm not saying that I didn't like the game, but it could have been better (or they could have at least added a hard mode to make the bosses more harder).
Oh yeah, and the black chick with the afro is hot. Without her, I think I would have hated the game.
I love most of the Zelda titles, and I've been a huge fan since the first. This one though, just didn't hit me like the other titles. I usually play through each Zelda game about 3 or 4 times afterwards, but I just can't find myself to play through this one again.
My opinions may change down the line. However from my initial experience, I just didn't like Twilight Princess that much.
you're right, those are also things that bugged me about the game. nothing about the game was "hard" at all, just tedious... like your example of doing all the different things just to get around one temple... i know people bash games like gears of war for being really linear (i know it's not even the same category of game here but).. at least there was no BACKTRACKING. that is a huge peeve of mine.
i'm with you, zelda has been one of my favorite franchises since the NES days... this one just didn't feel right.. hopefully the next one will bring back that zelda feeling.
Hell yes, my friends. Hell yes...
i don't think i was expecting too much from Z:TWP.. i mean, i expected to have a good time and i expected not to be frustrated with it.. that was it. i buy ps2 games still, so i'm not a graphics whore who knocks games because they're not state-of-the-art or anything like that. "chore" is the best way i can describe the experience i had with twilight princess.
definitely. i enjoyed phantom hourglass a LOT more than TP.. even the originals on the virtual console are more fun to play than TP. ;P
yeah the wolf parts were terrible, i don't know what nintendo was thinking..
@MXYPTLK
you hit the nail on the head buddy.
don't think I ever will, just not fun enough for me...
