okay, i'm not going to lie.. i've been having issues with dtoid's latest reviews on big games :
Fable II - got a 7.5 here, metacritic (meaning the rest of the world) has it at 89, a difference of 14%. Also officially giving it the lowest score out of every website on the internet on metacritic :(
Silent Hill Homecoming - got a 9 here (what), metacritic 72%, a difference of 18%.
Armored Core For Answer - got a 3 here, metacritic 65%, a difference of 35%.
Too Human - got a 2 here, metacritic has it a 65%, a difference of 45% (WHAT).
i think you see where this is going.
these discrepancies are ridiculous.. in my opinion dtoid reviews are VERY well written, some of the best out there, but the scores suck flat out. i almost *never* agree with the number scores.
and please, all of you "scores shouldn't matter" people.. don't post a reply here saying that shit, it's old... and if scores shouldn't matter, dtoid shouldn't score. period.
BUT i have an idea that might help fix this issue, check this idea (came to me in a dream) :
what if dtoid continues to review games, sans the number score (since most the reviewers say they hate the number score anyways)... then below that in the comment section there could be a voting 1-10 thing where the DTOID COMMUNITY can rate the game and leave a "i agree with the review here because xxx.. i disagree with it because... gave it an #".
SO we the DTOID COMMUNITY, actually hand out the number score! i think this idea is great, think about it... would braid be a 10 if it were up to us and not just the 5-6 reviewers? or silent hill a 9? highly doubt it. and instead of leaving it up to 5 people to decide a score for all, it'll be all of US that decide the score.
i think this idea is great, especially since DTOID always pushes itself as "the largest independent game community on the internet"... if it's really an independent game community, then give us some of the power to score games ourselves and take the pressure off DTOID reviewers who hate number scores and just let them do what they're good at, writing the actual review piece.
Let me know what you think!

I et sum playdo
Fables broken live with it. No mana? also i have like millions in the bank after only playing for 30 mins. BROKEN. co-op is also BROKEN. so be glad it got a 7.5 that's how I see it so far. games not bad though just I love 1 more.
I think that scoring a game using a full 1-10 scale is fine, I only take issues with it when they are way off. So many scores on Destructoid are so erratic. Some games can get a 2 and be somewhat decent, yet other decent games get 9's. I think the reviewers on this site need some sort of central, unifying vantage point so they are all on the same page.
This blog is just awful. Truly one of the worst pieces of writing I've ever seen.
wow, hot dog!
OP, I agree with you wholeheartedly. <3
in response to your comment about me:
i read it but there's nothing there but a feeling of "you guys have different opinions than others!". And if I didn't read the post or the comments how did I know about your community scoring idea? oooooooh i'm a magician!
and coonskin's science totally owned you.
...not that king3vbo is a whiny bitch or anything...
I think people have opinions.
Some opinions differ.
End.
I read this blog because I had an interesting opinion I wanted to share, but after reading through all these comments I just stopped caring.
Why do we need to have community scores when everyone here can just log onto Metacritic and score the game along with everyone else? For a unique DTOID membership perspective?
Why?
We already comment on the reviews. Why do we need to score along? Why do you have such a problem with the reviewer making the score?
I wouldn't mind seeing community averages posted (though not as the official Dtoid score on Metacritic), but I also think that they would not end up being a whole lot different from community averages at other sites, or at Metacritic itself.
While it does seem as if Dtoid's scores skew low (which has been explained so many times that it has become very boring to even discuss), the whole point of submitting a score to Metacritic is that the score *goes with* the review text. If a few editors give a scathing review to a game and then the Metacritic score coming from the community is an 8.1, that's pretty ass backwards. Also, I don't think that all of us can be as impartial as many of the reviewers, or use the scale properly as intended.
Of course, review scores themselves are pretty lame, but we've all been through that debate too, and they aren't going anywhere.
It's about giving your opinion, not conforming to the crowd. Otherwise there's no need for Dtoid to bother reviewing anything.
Fuckshitasticle is my new favouite word.
But yeah, like Jonathan said. On a true 10 point scale a 5 is average, when reading reviews its critically important to know how the publication you're reading treats its review scores. Every site and magazine has a different scoring system and before you read any of their reviews you have to read their scoring policy to know what those scores mean in real terms. Destructoid makes this a lot easier to do than other sites by not only linking to the scoring policy in every review but also putting down as a brief one-line summary what each of the number scores means.
Bottom line, the differing score systems of each publication are what make sites like Metacritic inaccurate and not just where game reviews are concerned. Because of this its more important to read the actual writing of the review to judge for yourself whether that 7/10 game is worth buying or not.
@thebza
Now, you're being quite a prat here, and I'm not sure you deserve a rational response, but I'm going to go with one and see where it ends up.
I don't understand your quibbling with Destructoid having differing opinions. It's no secret that the gaming media has a rather fucked up scoring system for reviews. It's rare that the full scale is ever used appropriately. Dtoid tends to use the full scale, which I appreciate. Now, I do agree that one or two of the reviewers may not be terribly good at their jobs and probably don't assign appropriate scores for some games, but it's not really my business to name names. But largely, I think most of Dtoid is trying to be honest, and not just trying to be different.
I like the idea of reviews having a built-in user poll, like the bigger sites. I don't like, however, the idea of the community setting the score. I can appreciate where you're coming from, but there's no way that it would work. Just take a look at some of Metacritic's user scores for games that haven't even come out yet. It would be inaccurate and heavily abused. Just because the core members of our community are decent people, that doesn't mean everyone else is. Polls are a good idea, but not at the cost of the reviewer setting the "official" score.
Also, learn to handle disagreements better. Your response to Necros in particular was really embarrassing.
I think thebza is a pretty cool guy. eh fixes dtoids reviews and doesnt afraid of anything.
Nope!
a review is an opinion that one person writes to describe how they see the game as objectively as possible, but its still an opinion based on a human being. humans are fallible. therefore, even though someone might write a bad review or give a game a bad score, that doesn't mean that you won't enjoy it.
conclusion: if you think a game is going to be good, rent it. try it out. if you like it enough to buy it, do so. otherwise, don't worry about it. never hinge your purchase on a bunch of reviews.
yikes! didn't mean to stir up such a shit storm, thanks for all the personal insults that were totally not about the topic, much appreciated!
after reading certain people's comments (jonathan holmes, very nicely explained your comment was most definitely the beacon of light here) i understand a little bit better why the scores are the way they are (for the most part). it doesn't quit explain the discrepancies between certain review scores on here that i've seen, but like a lot of you said in the end they are one man's (or 5 men/women's) opinion and take them as they are.
thanks to the people who actually acted like they were older than 15 years of age and addressed the topic with comments trying to explain their point of view on the subject, it's very much appreciated, and i mean that sincerely.
@Atlus - you hit the nail on the head buddy, that's my issue too.. the discrepancies between certain games, the number scores just boggle my mind and don't make much sense..
BTW DToid is dicks! i love this site!! :D
one more thing.. if you're afraid of people abusing a community scoring system, why not use the DTOID rank as a qualifier, for instance you have to have a rank of at least #### some number in order to score a vote on a game, that will at least prove that the person voting is an active member in the community... right?
I think YOU should review games.
I know I'm late, but this is the worst idea ever. Giving rating duty to the masses won't fix any problem, not that there is a problem. If you look at the reader reviews on, say, IGN, you'll see they're almost always a point or two higher on average than the actual review, and frequently come out before the game is released.
The "problem" you're referring to lies not in Destructoid, but rather, the rest of the Internet. People overrate games, they give mediocre games sevens and bad games fives. But not Destructoid. Destructoid uses the full 1-10 scale, actually assigning poor scores to poor games, and mediocre scores to mediocre games.
ahoi
I don't think the DTOID rank would be a good qualifier, it's just showing how active you are on the site but not how "qualified" you are to score games. Every fanboy can write 10 comments on every blog post just to get a higher ranking number but it wont make him a lesser fanboy...
@HOLYETHELINE -
seriously, what a homo.
