Where did the turn-based RPG go?
thebojangles | 2:52 PM on 03.24.2009 21 comments

The question is a bit easier to answer than it seems: portable. However, as someone who doesn't have enough time on a train/bus/backseat to warrant the purchase of a DS or a PSP, I'm feeling the pain. I've tried multiple RPGs for the 360 lately and they all ended up having real-time battles.

I understand for the masses that turn-based is boring and a big plodding, but I grew up with that stuff. I still break out the FF7 and FF8 every once in a while to fill the void. The real time battles allow the game to flow better at times and give it a sense of urgency in certain situations, but it feels less and less like an RPG and more and more like I'm playing through Dynasty Warriors.

I recently purchased Infinite Undiscovery on recommendation from a friend and it just sits there on my shelf, gathering dust after playing it for about 2 hours and getting ultimately frustrated with the gameplay mechanics. I kept thinking to myself, "This game would be so fucking cool if it at least gave me the option to play turn based". Every review for a 360 RPG that I look at has the words "real-time battles" in it and I get turned off. Even Fallout 3 included a pseudo turn-based system with VATS and I spent 90% of my gametime in it.

Does anyone know of any upcoming turn based RPGs for the 360?

Yeah, just bite the bullet and get a DS. You will not be disappointed.

I LOVE turn-based RPG's. I will take that any day of the week over any new fandangled real-time battle system. I unfortunately don't have a 360, so I can't help you there.

I don't know about upcoming, but there's a few turn-based RPGs on 360 already.

Lost Odyssey
Culdcept SAGA
Operation Darkness

Though Operation Darkness is a TRPG.

Um... honestly if you want turn based RPGs on a console you should look into getting a PS2.

Yeah, if you can afford a DS, I would get one this very second. I've been rocking Dragon Quest IV, and FF IV, and I'll tell you what, I am in heaven!

Lost Odyssey is almost too damn old school, perhaps that interests you? It goes for about $30 brand new.

I've heard mixed things about Lost Odyssey which is why I haven't picked it up yet. Maybe I'll scour Craigslist for a DS deal, I just can't justify blowing $150 on a thing I'll almost never use.

I agree with half of the commenters here. Lost Odyssey is a MUST BUY for turn-based RPG lovers.

Lost Odyssey, as you can tell most of us really recommend this game! And don't forget Blue Dragon either, very good turn based game. Also, if you are a huge Final Fantasy fan you owe it to yourself to play the two greatest Final Fantasies in the series, Final Fantasy VI and FFIV. I am hoping for a re-make of VI one of these days.

Why would you need to be in a car/train/bus to play a DS or PSP? They can be played at home just fine. I rarely play my DS outside of my house.

Echoing what others have said: a) get yourself a DS! You don't need commuting as an excuse for portable gaming. I play mine all the time, esp. at bedtime. b) Lost Odyssey. c) if you missed them, and have a PS2, do yourself a favor and track down copies of Persona 3 and Dragonquest VIII; between those two games alone you've got 160 or so hours worth of excellent turn-based RPG fun!

At home I have too many distractions with the 360 and the PC games I'm currently playing, so I don't know if I'd use it much. I played Blue Dragon not too long ago, I wasn't really thrilled with it.

Oh man DragonQuest 8 was the bomb.com. I totally forgot how good that game was.

Your doing yourself a disservice by not playing Lost Odyssey, It is by far the greatest turn based RPG I've played in many many years I'd go as far as to say its on par with the great rpgs of the snes.

The turn based RPG is currently living in a Florida retirement home, involved heavily with the organizational committee and "taking it easy" in its own words.

if the turn-based-Rpg is living in a retirement home then surely it is engaged in playing Wii Sports, more specifically Wii Bowling.

Yeah, like everyone said, Lost Odyssey. Speaking of Lost Odyssey I got four word for you, end of disc one. Seriously, just ask Chad about the end of disc one of Lost Odyssey and he will burst into tears, it's that emotional.

Yes, Western RPG's have definitely taken a lot of the wind out of JRPG's appeal and sales. Even with that said, I still believe there is room for a really good turned based RPG to still come out.... Suikoden VI anyone?
