So I played the Civilization Revolution demo today, and all I can think is why the fuck haven't I ever given the Civilization series a chance? I've only ever dabbled in RTS games, but never turned based strategy games (with the exception of Toribash, and Worms).
Something about turned based strategy games involving cities and such always turned me off. I think it had something to do with my brief experience with Disciples II. At the time I played it, I became impatient with having to wait turns to attack other units and actually make any progress at all.
So it's safe to say that I don't whether Disciples II is any good or not, but that's not this blog post is about.
...moving on.
What I want to say here is this: the Civilization Revolution demo is something new that I've never quite experienced before. It's actually made me want to check out other games in the genre and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna run out and buy it when I get the chance.
Any suggestions as to what else I should check out in the turned based genre?
I'm looking to broaden my horizons.
I've loved the civilization series ever since no.2 and Revolution is great! They did a really great job streamlining the game (especially the menus) for the consoles. I still prefer to play these kind of games on the PC though and I hardly ever play on my PC these days...
If you're looking for turned based games it depends on what kind because there are a lot of different sub-genres.
What consoles do you have? I think the Civilization games are quite unique but if you want to try other turned based games check out the Advanced Wars series on the DS/GBA or if you want to try strategy RPGs then give Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaia or the Fire Emblem games a go.
Civ 4 for the PC. That was the first Civ game I ever played, and I loved it to death. I had to delete it from my computer because I was playing that to much and not studying. But if you like the Civ Revolution demo, check out Civ 4.
Easy, first you MUST play Rome:Total war, seeing as it is over 4 years old, it will run on almost any pc or laptop, it runs on my shit-to mid rangs lappytop, Age of Empires, all of them but number 3 will most likely be demanding hardware wise. One last game I loved playing and breaks from the usual mould of RTS's is warhammer:Dawn of war, which is fantastic to play.
If you want a real time strategy, get the best: Starcraft. Its great. Warcraft 2 & 3 and Command & Conquer are also pretty fun. Starcraft and its expansion Brood War are the ones to look for though.
The Total War series has the civilization like diplomacy management and economy, but battles are more like a massive RTS battle. Lots of fun.
