Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Heh, PTO rocks. =D
Haven't decided...
I'll most likely be nibbling on it for most of next week, like a really fine block of cheese.
There Knives, now you don't have to feel so left out!
not getting fired > Brawl
Unless your job is eating poop.
Yay? I don't think both of us not playing is Smash next weekend is something to celebrate =P.
Monday is senior skip day here! Also taking off most of the rest of the week due to underclassmen testing!!!!
Also, scheduling it off weeks ago, doesn't make it better. It just means you were still setting your schedule and life around being one of `thoes guys`. And it wasn't just a spur of the moment thing, which makes it worse.
I don't take days off very often and I'm choosy about the ones I do take off. I happen to have 5 weeks paid time off this year and basically nothing to spend them on. So I decided to take a single day to play Brawl. I'd say that's damn well better than taking a day off to recover from a hangover like a lot of people do, or a myriad other shit ass reasons to take off a day.
And if Brawl isn't a good reason to take a day off? What would you suggest to be a good reason to take a day off other than being sick? Do you just take it all at once and have a long ass vacation? Sleep in late? Just want to have "a day" with the wife? No.
I use my PTO because that's what it is. Paid time off. My company encourages productivity and encourages employees to use their time off to get a break from the monotony of it all. So I do. Sometimes I take a day off to clean the house, sometimes I take a day off because I catch the damned flu. And, for the first time I take a day off for a game I've really been looking forward to and I'm judged for perpetuating a stereotype that frankly doesn't exist, that I wouldn't be perpetuating anyway. Aside from the few people who read this random blog, no one else even knows why I'm taking a day off. For all they know, I'm going in for dental work.
Frankly I think it's egotistical assholes like these two that perpetuate negative stereotypes for gamers. By your ridiculous accusations and baseless arguments, you make it continue the idea that there's something wrong with gaming. You're actually implying that gaming is something to be looked down upon and is 'beneath you' in some way. Frankly, even my coworkers DID know that I was taking a day off for a video game, so what? What business is it of yours, what I chose to do on my day off? Who are you to tell me what's supposed to be important in my life?
As a response to what I do? I save it up and take a lump sum to go out of town for a week or so and have an actual vacation. And I don't take any games with me usually. Unless it's a really long roadtrip and even then... I don't play them often. I'm on vacation to go out and see the sights. Not sit around and play games in my room.
So to recap: Hangovers and video games are fairly bad reasons to skip work and school.
But not everyone was raised with my families work ethic. I have plenty of time after work and after classwork for video games and on weekends. I don't need to take a day off to play a game.
I don't know what kind of people would.
At least I don't have to run away to be happy. I enjoy playing games alot as well. So just because my vacation is in town, doen't mean that it is a waste of time or that I am a loser. Maybe he is gonna spend that day with friends and family. Maybe they wanna play too. Did you ever think of that?
I'm really glad that I only work a few hours that day so I can go and hang out with my friends who are gonna be playing.
So to recap: just because you're a loser who has to run away from life to be happy, doesn't mean that you know anything about people who don't.
