Anyone else taking Monday off for Smash Bros?
that1dood | 1:16 PM on 03.06.2008 32 comments

I'm actually taking Monday off so I can let the Brawling continue for an extra day and to allow for a little bit of extra sleep seeing as how I probably won't sleep this weekend. Especially with the recently announced nationwide tournament at Gamestop and Brawl coming out in like... 48 hours. *Drool!*

So, is anyone else taking Monday off of work so Brawling may continue uninterupted by silly things such as sleep, work, and other responsible things?

I miss PTO, one of the down sides of being a contractor. I miss health insurance too.

Ouch! Union is the only way to go man. always having a job lined up and fantastic benefits are always good. Granted, paying dues always blows or whatever, but it's a truly small price to pay for the security.

It takes a special kind of loser to take a day off for a video game.

I actually don't know if I am taking Monday off. I might be taking one day off so I can play a combo of Smash and Condemned 2. Gots to get the most out of it?

Haven't decided...

I haven't skipped a day of work (or school) just for a video game, in the longest time.

I won't even be playing it on Sunday, gots responsibilities. And I'm creative producer on the project we're working on Monday, so yeah... I can't get sick.

I'll most likely be nibbling on it for most of next week, like a really fine block of cheese.

There Knives, now you don't have to feel so left out!

I have Monday and Tuesday off but I work 13 hours on Sunday... and I have things to do on Monday that will occupy my time... Which pisses me off because I'd rather be playing Brawl... But whatever.

HA I'm a loser and only have one class Monday so it would be pointless to "come down with something"

If my work doesn't schedule me, then I'll be happy. I haven't been getting many hours letely, so it shouldn' be a problem.

If I call off one more time I'll be fired. I'm still debating whether or not I'll call of on Monday.

I don't have to take off. I don't have any classes on Mondays (4 on Tuesdays though) and I only work when I'm on break from college or during the summer.

Wow, no one at my work know why I'm taking the day off. And it's not like I'm calling in sick. By no means am I encouraging something like that. I scheduled it off weeks ago. Perpetuating a stereotype? Screw you man, thanks for assuming you know me and my work ethic.

Your work ethic must not be that great if you're taking a paid day off to play fucking Brawl. It means exactly what it looks like, that a video game is obviously more important to you then your job. Say what you want, man. Your actions speak for themselves.

Also, scheduling it off weeks ago, doesn't make it better. It just means you were still setting your schedule and life around being one of `thoes guys`. And it wasn't just a spur of the moment thing, which makes it worse.

I see what you're trying to say but it's completely baseless and assumes that I've created a habit of doing this. The whole reason I started this article was because I had never done this before. I was curious if there were other D-toiders who were as excited about this game as I was. I've got my answer it seems, though not without those who would assume the worst it seems.

I don't take days off very often and I'm choosy about the ones I do take off. I happen to have 5 weeks paid time off this year and basically nothing to spend them on. So I decided to take a single day to play Brawl. I'd say that's damn well better than taking a day off to recover from a hangover like a lot of people do, or a myriad other shit ass reasons to take off a day.

And if Brawl isn't a good reason to take a day off? What would you suggest to be a good reason to take a day off other than being sick? Do you just take it all at once and have a long ass vacation? Sleep in late? Just want to have "a day" with the wife? No.

I use my PTO because that's what it is. Paid time off. My company encourages productivity and encourages employees to use their time off to get a break from the monotony of it all. So I do. Sometimes I take a day off to clean the house, sometimes I take a day off because I catch the damned flu. And, for the first time I take a day off for a game I've really been looking forward to and I'm judged for perpetuating a stereotype that frankly doesn't exist, that I wouldn't be perpetuating anyway. Aside from the few people who read this random blog, no one else even knows why I'm taking a day off. For all they know, I'm going in for dental work.

Frankly I think it's egotistical assholes like these two that perpetuate negative stereotypes for gamers. By your ridiculous accusations and baseless arguments, you make it continue the idea that there's something wrong with gaming. You're actually implying that gaming is something to be looked down upon and is 'beneath you' in some way. Frankly, even my coworkers DID know that I was taking a day off for a video game, so what? What business is it of yours, what I chose to do on my day off? Who are you to tell me what's supposed to be important in my life?

I never said it was beneath anybody to play video games. I said it takes a special kind of loser to take a day off of a job or off of school. Implying that the game is more important then working for your wage. I don't care that you have 5 weeks of PTO saved up. You still chose THIS as a `good` reason to have a day off. I can't help but feel that's a childish thing to do. But that's because I've been taught that you don't take days off work for these kind of things. Hangovers included. If I drank on a worknight, It's my own stupid fault and I have to pay for it.

As a response to what I do? I save it up and take a lump sum to go out of town for a week or so and have an actual vacation. And I don't take any games with me usually. Unless it's a really long roadtrip and even then... I don't play them often. I'm on vacation to go out and see the sights. Not sit around and play games in my room.

So to recap: Hangovers and video games are fairly bad reasons to skip work and school.

But not everyone was raised with my families work ethic. I have plenty of time after work and after classwork for video games and on weekends. I don't need to take a day off to play a game.

I don't know what kind of people would.

How about people who actually have to WORK for a living. I work my ass off all the time and when I'm done, I'm still just barely scraping by and don't have much time for anything except sleep. My family has an amazing work ethic. I worked a register for four hours with a broken finger just so my work wouldn't be screwed over. Just because you don't agree with people's reasons for doing something doesn't make you right. I take time off to be with my family and friends every once and a while. And alot of times that does consist of playing games with them because that is what they like to do.

At least I don't have to run away to be happy. I enjoy playing games alot as well. So just because my vacation is in town, doen't mean that it is a waste of time or that I am a loser. Maybe he is gonna spend that day with friends and family. Maybe they wanna play too. Did you ever think of that?

I'm really glad that I only work a few hours that day so I can go and hang out with my friends who are gonna be playing.

So to recap: just because you're a loser who has to run away from life to be happy, doesn't mean that you know anything about people who don't.
