Greetings out there once again Dtoid Nation
As everyone knows the Nintendo Wii has some great games coming to table this Holiday season with titles such as
Batallion Wars 2,
Mario Galaxy, and
NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams. Unfortunately however, Nintendo has somewhat dropped the ball on it’s fans which is something they have been
good at in past generations. The big announcement this week
Super Smash Brothers Brawl is Delayed once again. This has been the big buzz on Nintendo this week, however I can honestly say I’m not surprised.
Theory
The Nintendo Wii as everyone knows has had
immaculate success in it’s first year, surpassing the current market leader (Xbox360) in less than 6 months. This great success has created a great shortage of the Nintendo Wii this holiday season. The New York Post even ran an article on Monday about the
’Wii Woes’ for anxious gamers this holiday season. (I never realized how much profit Nintendo could rake in with software sales on each console).
From a business standpoint, this shortage of consoles is obviously the reason for pushing back Brawl until February. This is the logical thing to do with a title that is going to absolutely push systems left and right. We all have good feeling that with the release of Super Mario Galaxy, it will have the potential to be a system seller, and with the long list of games due out the day after (20 Tittles), Nintendo is pushing to over double it’s current shelf library. I don’t remember honestly the last Holiday season I have seen so many game release for a single season within such a short period of time, that’s in its’ first year, if anyone would like to point me towards an article on that, I would be appreciated.
The push back of Brawl until February not only gives Nintendo a 2nd Christmas in 08, it gives gamers a chance to catch up on all the other great titles that are hitting us before the end of 07. This short delay might also give Nintendo the opportunity to catch up with the current demand of the Nintendo Wii console before it creates itself an even larger demand with the release of Brawl. Sounds logical to me, and I am willing to put good faith in this theory. Nintendo would potentially double their profits from the slew of gamers that are only purchasing the Wii this holiday season for brawl, you know as well as I do, those gamers are going to pick up a few games to tide them over till brawl.
Also, I think Nintendo doesn’t want to really shadow the release of Super Mario Galaxy, with quickly releasing its other largest first party title less than 30 day later.
Propaganda
There has been much speculation on the internet as to why Brawl was delayed. From a complete only restructure, to the addition of voice, all the way over to Reggie overshooting the capabilities of the Brawl Development team.
I don’t honestly think Nintendo has plans to restructure the online just yet, until friend codes become soo much of a problem that 3rd party’s stop developing for Nintendo all together, Nintendo will think that the Wii Friend Codes work. However, when you think about it, how many games have actually USED the friend codes. Strikers Charged uses a game code, which is stupidity at it’s best. EA Sports uses it’s own internal messenger style friends. I don’t really think this is as huge an issue as everyone is making it out to be at this point.
The addition of voice is something I honestly can’t wait for to the Nintendo Wii Console, as I sit and play Mario Strikers Charged during Friday Night Fights or am getting my ass kicked in a quick round of NBA Live 08, I would love nothing more than to taunt my opponent and get into their head a little to give myself that slight edge. Ultimately, if Nintendo were going to delay Brawl, just to add voice, I’m sure they would have put it in their announcement. This would have sent most Wii owners into an overwhelming ecstasy.
Finally, we come to Reggie overshooting the capabilities of the Brawl Development team. To my knowledge, Reggie is your average corporate tool, he tells people what he is told to tell them. Reggie is nothing more than the puppet of the corporation, and his goal is to help boost sales. He done a great job of keeping Americas thoughts and opinions on the Nintendo Wii Console high. Spite your average 14y/o who enjoys scouting the internet for topics on the Wii and posting things such as ‘360 and PC FTW’ or ‘WiiSUCKS!’ the wii has been widely and popularly and widely received as a contender this year in the console market.
The Random Bullshit
Yes, now it’s time for that great American bullshit fest. The Wii has finally returned to the top of the list shortly after being nudged out for only a short amount of time by the 360 during the launch of Halo3. Just for my pure enjoyment and pleasure, and to watch the masses of nubs falling into that giant proverbial vat of ‘Hateraide’ here you go…
That little white box that nobody thought could, is still selling like Rash Ointment after a long hot night of
Necros Love! Also, Fonzie is gay!
As always out there Dtoid Nation…
Have a Great Day, and Happy Gaming!!
However, I think THIS might be a good read for you. As your reading comprehension seems to be a tad off. Although, I do see the irony in writing an article about reading comprehension to help people with their reading comprehension. Irony at it's best if you ask me.
Also, I'm going to have to say your first theory is probably true. It makes sense from a business standpoint.
When I picked up my Wii I bought one game. That game was Scarface. A port of an old PS2 game. I'm a slut for 3rd person free-roaming titles and knowing it was set in the 80s like Vice City sealed the deal for me. The exclusive titles available at that point just weren't enough to sell me on the system. I bought it because I was afraid I wouldn't find one this holiday season and NEEDED a game to play on it.
However, I have not even contemplated buying another Wii titles since. I've had the system for almost 2 months. Metroid Prime Corruption looks good, but I can wait 'til Christmas for it and not spend the money myself. I never played a Metroid game of any type, so getting it right away really wasn't important to me. I'd rather continue getting games off GameFly 'til then anyway.
There is no doubt my library will expand after this holiday season. I am looking to acquire Metroid, Mario Galaxy, and Battalion Wars (I always wanted to play the first one but didn't own a GameCube anymore when it came out). But I bought the system in anticipation of Smash Bros. Everything else is just proverbial icing on the cake or arguably filler to justify my purchase.
The sysem sells well, yes. But it does not have a good enough lineup to warrant a purchase, not for me anyway. (Super Paper Mario is the only other game I thought of other than Metroid, and even so I will likely never get it) I know a lot of people have felt the same way. It's just the truth.
PS. - Can't wait for Smash.
I don't know, Nintendo is getting that sweet taste of WIN so far. I look for them to move away from the kiddie mobile soon and offer something for it's hardcore crowd, never the less, it will still offer voice for 3rd party titles, or it will soon fall victim to being the joke of the online gaming community.
Nintendo's first year linup has had some decent titles, I think you left out Twilight Princess which was a phenomenal game. Redundant yet, phenomenal. Strikers charged was nice, just a bastard to play online, Metroid well, words can't describe my delight with it.
Here is the thing though, no console that I can recall in history has had an 'Epic Mindblowing' lineup in their first year. Xbox didn't do it, 360 didn't do it, PSone didn't do it, PS2 didn't do it, PS3 isn't doing it, N64 didn't do it, Gamecube didn't do it. The only consoles to ever really have an excellent library in their first year were the NES and SNES.Since we are speaking truth and all. (didn't actually expect a valid response for flame bait)
So to bash on the Wii saying the current titles for the wii don't warrant a purchase, well, for you they may not, but for many people, they can be satisfied with FP titles like Charged, Zelda, Paper Mario, and metroid. Some can be satisfied with minigame collections like WarioWare and Rayman Raving Rabbids, and then there are some that enjoy the ports, like The Godfather (which I highly reccomend since it got a price cut to 30$ It's an excellent sandbox port), and Resident Evil 4.
The first year isn't over for the Wii Until Nov. 19th, so we still have a little over 30 days for the library to explode. In the next 30 days we have titles like Guitar Hero III, Battalion Wars II, Manhunt2, Fire Emblem, Galaxy, Geometry Wars, Godzilla, Medal of Honor: Heroes2, RE: Umbrella Chronicles, SoulCalibur Legends, and Raymand Raving Rabbids 2. There are many more, however, these are the titles that come to mind that have had the most appeal to the general audiences.
Only time will tell, but I can assure you that it will be the hardest to find console this holiday season.
Also, I agree with you and think you are really really smart.
Anyone who would consider me really really smart is setting themselves up for a fail of 'EPIC PROPORTIONS!'
Although one could argue that he's not exactly privy to the development cycle of the game.
