I've been doing some retrogaming this week and I've been throwing an idea around in my head while doing it.
Basically, i want to amass a list across several different platforms of the all time greatest rpgs... and then i
want to beat the living shit out of them while blogging about them. 50 rpgs in a year, screenshots, reviews,
comparisons, historical impact, the works.
My reason for this is two-fold
1) I have a massive back catalog that i need to get through. There are too many quality games that i just didn't
make time for. Nothing screams frustration more than looking at all the quality games that I just haven't opened
yet.
2) Journalism/convergent media project. I am approaching graduation time and I would like a project that lets me
have fun, but shows off what I can do. This is a project from the ground up that I will be handling from concept
to completion.
I think my limit in this project is console and finite rpgs. PC games are fantastic and there have been several
great titles over the years, but I really don't want to get my ass kicked by a game that is going to grind out too
much time (ala baldur's gate, NWN.) I'm also wrestling with what constitutes an RPG. Do some hack and slash
games make the cut? Other than that, i also need to make a nice criteria and rating system to evaluate my
playthrough and time spent in game.
Also, the games have to be in english since my Japanese blows.
Thoughts? Suggestions? My biggest hurdle at this point is amassing a list and parsing it down to a level that is
manageable. If you guys have a game suggestion, please give me a reason.
Suggested Games thus far:
Snes:
Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, SMRPG, FFIII/VI, SD III
Genesis:
Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 2/3/4
PSX:
Suikoden 1/2, FF tactics, Vagrant Story
PS2:
Disgaea, FFX,
SMS:
Phantasy Star
NES:
To do list:
List roughly 100~150 games, parse list down.
Establish solid criteria for reviewing.
Build breakout box for taking SS on console games.

Also, the Breath of Fire SNES games are pretty good.
Um, more suggestions: Wild Arms (PSX), Parasite Eve (PSX), Mother 3 (GBA), Golden Sun (GBA).
Always remember that games like Chronno Trigger have multiple endings and ego the narrative and flow of the story can go in more than one way, consider playing more than once.
Also: Final Fantasy IV, IX and at least one Persona game
@xhumation As i said in the original post, i may be throwing out PC games due to the scope and nature of the games. I am currently having an issue on criteria and how to approach the gaming selection.
I am also doing each game completely in the dark. No guides at all, though i will consider using a few game mechanics guides to approach some of the older titles and to circumnavigate any bugs in the game, but only at the suggestion of my readers
Also, DEFINITELY play Vagrant Story. My favorite game of all time, easy, and if you do things right, you can do a full playthrough in like 12 hours. And the story is sooooo awesome.
Vagrant Story is actually the game that kicked this off in my head.
If you play Grandia 2 or Skies of Arcadia, make sure you play the Dreamcast originals and not the ported versions.
Not choosing to review PC RPGS reflects a bias on the part of the reviewer. If you're going to play through all 4 discs of some god-forsaken game like FF VIII, then at least acknowledge games like Baldur's Gate II, Fallout 1-3, and NWN. Even if you only play through the most basic single-played campaign it will make you seem less biased then if you stick to only playing console JRPGS, which are only one (albeit major) aspect of RPG gaming.
Either way, keep us posted on how this goes!
Im torn on the PC games which could almost be a standalone piece.
Lunar Silver Star Story (PSone)
Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)
Grandia series (PSone)
Skies of Arcadia (DC, GCN)
Evolution: World of Sacred Device (DC, GCN)
Pokemon (GB, GBC, GBA, DS)
Alundra (PSone)
Dragon Quest series (multiple)
Threads of Fate (PSone)
Chrono Cross (PSone)
Secret of Evermore (SNES)
Mana series (multiple)
Lunar is the quintessential classic RPG. If you haven't experienced it yet, you need to. Threads of Fate is an action RPG, and my favorite game on the PSone. Secret of Evermore plays kind of like Secret of Mana, but doesn't really fit into the Mana series-it's another experience entirely.
You should track your physical health as you play these games, 50 RPGs in a year is a lot of time in front of the TV!
