In a recent mailbag session with Greg Miller on IGN, Tretton was asked why Sony has yet to support homebrew of any kind on the PSP. Jack's response was this:
"I think that is something that is in the works," he said. "We certainly see some of the stuff that has been done via homebrew, and it's incredibly creative. And I think we'd like to try and tap into that a little bit more."
Dave Karraker, senior director of corporate communications for SCE (as well as a 3rd nationally ranked clogsman), added:
...that moving forward with homebrew software has one main hurdle to cross -- figuring out how to support the new content without putting the PSP at risk [of piracy].
Personally, I think it's about damn time. While I think it's a bit ridiculous, and kinda funny, that as "new age" as the PSP is, more and more people want to use it to play old classics, it does make you wonder why Sony has taken so long to address it, and even so, all they really said was "they're working on it." They would be walking a very fine line too, considering that a majority of the homebrew hacks that are available for the PSP consist of emulators of older systems, most of which, of course, aren't Sony games. Finding a way to support this community without really adding more fuel to the long burning fire of game piracy would be taxing to say the least.
What I'd really like to see is Sony back independent game developers with getting their own homebrew made original titles onto the system. Being able to play
Cave Story on the PSP without having to do firmware hacks or
game exploits would be great, and a lot less hassle on the part of the consumer. Not to mention that getting behind homebrew in some aspect could help to push a few more PSPs out of the gamestores of the world, and in the end, isn't that what we all want?

The Hamburgler strikes again!
Also, opening up the PSP to more Indie developers as you suggest is really the best thing. But, I seriously doubt they'll just open up the system. Sony makes money on all the software sold on the system and not really the hardware. Opening it up too much and Sony is cut out of the profit loop, too little and games which should get on the PSP don't make it.
It's a tough balance and I hope they figure it out.
What they should do then is develop something similar to the XNA game kit for Xbox Live. Charge independents a fair price to get a devkit or game developing program that they can then use to create games for the PSP. Free or otherwise. That way Sony get's its pockets lined from software sales, as well as hardware sales, and the consumer get's new, ingenious, and very fun games at little to no extra expense. Everyone wins!
When the PSP was first released, it didn't really have much in terms of games. This dry spell continued for quite some time so it's no real surprise that homebrew got as big as it did on the PSP. With the library expanding and less emphasis on UMD, I expect homebrew to fall from its #1 thing to do with a PSP ranking.
That's funny, because I was just listening to Nex talk about the home brew in the PSP and Lumines.
I still don't know if this would make me consider a PS3, and I'm really trying to sell my PS3 and Wii. Bad?
I think that an XNA for the PS3/PSP is years away. Maybe they will create some programming environment for the PSP in the meantime. But they will never open up the PSP for homebrew; the average consumer would figure out that they could also play entire PSP games and roms etc.
snail I think you hold on to both systems... they are just behind in development. the 360 drought was awful.
@Professor Pew
Yeah I agree about the XNA thing. I don't see them putting out something like that anytime soon, but I'd like to see them support independents in some facet. Like I said, I want to see a legitimate version of Cave Story on my PSP.
I believe that if Sony truly got behind an XNA-type system for the PSP/PS3 they could put it out very quickly. Likely they already have such tools for in-house development. They just choose to hold those tools tightly for some business reasons.
Yeah, Snail, we should do some MP Resistance sometime. Maybe that will get you to like your PS3 again. As for the Wii. All we really need is Super Smash Bros. then all will be fine again.
tazar you need to teach me some stuff about photoshop. that pic is stunning
I mean mspaint
More companies need to get behind the homebrew/indie dev. Look at some of the gold that has come from Newgrounds - there's untapped potential for console games. I think a framework that makes the dtoid c-blog of game devolpment possible would be a golden ray of awesome. Scary, but awesome.
@Bahamut
Google image search + magnetic lasso tool + eyedropper = comic gold.
AWWWWWWWWWWW YEAYUH!
That, or he can steal it's higher points (Custom BGM, skinning support) and call it a day. I'd be happy either way.
You totally came through with that Hamburgler pic.
Big Mac has been alerted. There's no need for alarm.
@ Mxyzptlk
Pics or it didn't happen.
something tells me that by 'tap into it a little more' sony just wants to find a way to charge you for something someone woulda wanted you to have for free.
@galagabug
Should I bust out Captain Obvious? They know that one of the main selling points of the PSP is something that is completely out of their control, so the only logical solution would be to police it in a manner of choosing, as charging you some fee for it.
Personally, I wouldn't mind it, if it was quality content. Cave Story is and will always be my posterchild for why this should be taken seriously.
@ Agent Chieftain:
Look, here he comes now:
OMG, It is Big Mac!
This is the greatest comment thread ever.
WARES DA GRIMMACE!?
does anyone else think grimace is actually one of those dark mystery gristles you find in every dark meat chicken nugget?
My thoughts exactly.
Keep the PS3, Snail. You'll be wanting one again within the next year.
The Wii I would sell while it's still high in value.
