Guitar Hero World Tour: The Continued Raping of Blind Consumers

Let me get this out of the way first: I am not a "Harmonix fanboy". If I was, I wouldn't have bought the mess that was Guitar Hero 3 because of blind love for a certain company. However, after the epic battle between the two music game giants, Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Band, occurred last year, it was an easy outcome for anyone with half a brain and a few extra dollars: Rock Band was the finer game. Not only did the game nail the gameplay on all instruments, the DLC promises were completely fulfilled. All around North America (Note: This blog is not a reflection on the poor job done by EA in publishing Rock Band across the pond) critics praised Rock Band as a revolutionary platform and excellent music based game.

Alas, as all things occur, the stupidity of the masses brought shameful results: Guitar Hero 3 outsells Rock Band in a landslide. Was it the superior quality of the game? Of course not: any consumer with an internet connection could go to any Gamerankings or Metacritic-type site and see that Rock Band outscored GH3 by at least 7%. Was it the soundtrack? Not really. Both games had great soundtracks that appealed to most music enthusiasts that looked them up on Wikipedia. Plus, the average Joe could care less what songs are on the disc, because the average Joe does not hear anything thats not on MTV or MegaHitz 98.3 FM.

No it was a name. Guitar Hero. The words that build a strong reputation on three fantastic music games from Harmonix. However, the developers get shafted once again. Neversoft sloppily put together a mediocre music game that sold to millions across America within its first week of release. While Rock Band has been successful, it has not reached the megaton status that the Guitar Hero brand now has.

What caused me to start this too-little/too-late argument? Recently I have viewed some leaked footage of the latest masterpiece from Neversoft and Activision:

This short video shows little promise that GHIV will be more than a sloppy "me too" attempt by Neversoft to catch up with Rock Band's new found fire. The interface is cluttered and horrible, the band visuals are atrocious, and there is little good to be found anywhere at all.

Meanwhile Rock Band II will do nothing than build upon a great proven formula: A fantastic new track list seems to have pleased 95% of the people who see it (as well as 20 free tracks on day one), the gameplay modes have been updated to answer to fans' requests, and the instruments seem much improved over the disappointing showing of RB1s instruments.

Does this mater? Absolutely not. Guitar Hero World Tour will sell truck loads to blind fans of brand names and mediocrity will become the new standard of music games. Please dont support this injustice.   read

My thoughts on the GH 80s Soundtrack

1. "Holy Diver" - Dio

A cool classic metal song. Way too easy, but the solo should be decent fun to play.

2. "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" - Quiet Riot

One of the better hair metal tracks in the game.

3. "Nothin' But A Good Time" - Posion

Meh. As you'll see Im not a huge fan of hair metal (yes I know thats like half the songs in this game) and this is no different. The note chart looks fun though.

4. "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister

Even with what I just said, I love this song for three reasons: Goofy. Goober. Rock.

5. "Lonely is the Night" - Billy Squier

Though I was upset that they didnt pick "The Stroke" instead, this is one of the best songs ever to come out of the 80s. Easy looking, but an awesome song.

6. "Synchronicity II" - The Police

I'm not a big Police fan, but at least this one is a bit different. Cool sound effects.

7. "Heat of the Moment" - Asia

Holy shit no. As much as a "classic" as this sing is, its fucking retarted. Just a terrible, boring, cheesy song.

8. "Shakin'" - Eddie Money

Who by what now?

9. "Bathroom Wall" - Faster Pussycat

Though when I first heard the title of the song and band I groaned, this is one of the best songs in the game. The riff is awesome and the chorus is catchy.

10. "Round and Round" - Ratt

The solo is really cool, and this is a cool hair metal song, but the note chart looks very repetitive.

11. "I Ran (So Far Away)" - A Flock of Seagulls

Holy shit. When I first saw this song was in this game I nearly cried with happiness. One of the best and cheesiest songs from the decade. My favorite song in the game.

12. "Play With Me" - Extreme

Wicked song. Amazingly hard and awesome note chart, with and awesome solo and intro. I hate how they took out the "curunca" guitar sound in the beggining, but this going to be awesome and challenging today.

13. "18 and Life" - Skid Row

One of the crappiest "rock ballads" Ive ever heard. Ricky was a young boy? Who gives a shit. Screw ricky.

14. "Balls to the Wall" - Accept

Cool metal song.

15. "Only a Lad" - Oingo Boingo

Terrible cover but a really weird and great song.

16. "The Warrior" - Scandal

Alot of people are happy about this but the song is way too easy.

17. "Radar Love" - White Lion

Not really happy with this. A cover of a cover of a mediocre song? Weak.

18. "We Got the Beat" - The Go-Go's

At first I thought this classic track would be really fun to play. Then I saw the note chart...

19. "Caught in a Mosh" - Anthrax

Wow. This looks amazingly fun. Seriously one of the funnest looking note charts Ive seen in any song in any GH game. Amazing. Great metal song too.

20. "Hold on Loosely" - .38 Special

Cool little song. Cant wait to see what the note chart looks like. Hopefully fun.

21. "No One Like You" - Scorpions

Not a big Scorpions fan, and I dont know why they just didnt make everyone happy with Rock you like a Hurricane.

22. "Seventeen" - Winger

Thought it would be another meh hair metal track, but the note chart looks amazing and the solos look really challenging.

23. "Turning Japanese" - The Vapors

I lol'ed and cheered when I heard this song was in the game. Cant wait. This is going to be the big song for drunk buddies.

24. "Wrathchild" - Iron Maiden

What the hell? This is the Maiden song they chose? Still amazing that they have Maiden in the game, but I wish they chose something more challenging or from NOTB.

25. "Ballroom Blitz" - Krokus

Booooooooooo! I love this song, but Im dissapointed they didnt save the Sweet version for GH3. Im unhappy, but Ill still rock this track like crazy.

26. "What I Like About You" - The Romantics

At first I thought, "meh". But after hearing the song and seeing the note chart, I was pretty pleased. The cover is very boring sounding, but this is going to be a hit at partties.

Im not extremely happy witha all of the songs, but alot of them sound really fun and since I finally 5*ed all the carrer songs in GH2, I cant wait to rock out alot this summer!
