I LOVE NY! My GTA 4 Love Letter
superflossy | 10:46 AM on 05.01.2008 22 comments

Since moving to New York four years ago after college, I've always had a love-hate relationship with the city. I've griped about things ranging from the overpriced bars to the hipster quotient to the lack of an Arby's. I've thought about moving to San Francisco, Hong Kong, London, you name it. My allegiance to NYC only surfaced when I was out of town, calling myself a New Yorker out of pure smugness or hankering for a decent slice of pie. Yeah, I'm a hypocrite douche bag, I know. But all of this changed last night as I played GTA 4 for the first time. I apologize for everything I ever said against you, New York. Fuck me for ever hating you, I love you and I live in the most awesome city in the entire world.

When I took out the map, saw the subway lines, and found my neighborhood, I had this incredible swell of geekiness that made me yell "I live in Liberty City!" one too many times and kick my feet in the air like a little girl. Once I started driving around doing missions and eventually just exploring the city, every little detail would make me giddy. From the Citigroup building in Long Island City to the replica screens on the Metrocard vending machines, seeing these things in my daily life inside a videogame just made me so happy.

But then, everything became really psychotically awesome as I did things in the game that I've daydreamed of doing in real life. Subway taking too long? Oh, I'll just hijack a cab and drive it up to the train tracks! Hot dog guy sold me a dog with a soggy bun? Hey, I'll just knife him in the throat and then get my money back, wheeee!

GTA 4, for me as a New Yorker, is transcendent. It's affected me beyond merely the videogame plane and made me wholeheartedly appreciate my city in all of its grimy metaphorical glory. I'd like to thank everyone at Rockstar for helping me realize the awesomeness that surrounds me every single day.

I was kind of (but not really) expecting to see some sort of trashy ho/man thing wanting attention in front of a camera...

Oh hell. It would figure I left something out...

But after playing the original Godfather game and trapsing around Hells Kitchen and the new GTA game... It just makes me want to go there and just see everything I can.

I've always enjoyed NYC; I think that mostly comes from not actually living there.

Liberty City, however... just one more day until I visit. An eternal day.

...I love you and I live in the most awesome city in the entire world.

That’s how I always feel about NYC :)

But yeah, all of Liberty City’s little tributes and similarities to NYC have got me raving. East Borough Bridge = Triborough Bridge, Canary Island = Randalls Island, Broker-Dukes Expressway = Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, and on and on and on. I love it!

I live in Albany which is where the DLC is taking place.... (no, really, I swear)

My girlfriend lives in Glen Cove on long island though, so I'm downstate in the city all the time. I love driving around the game and seeing things I know in real life.

I've only been a few times, but I had a couple of "WHOA!" moments while playing in multiplayer. We used to go up as a scholarship group back in college. Artist Scholars. So my mements were

-Running away from cops and realizing I was passing the the art museam
- Seeing the sign for "PS45" and realizing that, not far away, there was this big office building that looked just a little out of place over in the burroughs.
- Flying over in a Heli and seeing those driving ranges on the water along the west side of Algonquin.

The only thing that would have made it more authentic for me as a vistor to NY would be if everythgin was overcast - I'd don't have any memories of New York being anythign but overcast when I've visited :)

@daedhead - I hope you don't use the term "New Yorker" to describe yourself. Upstate is a whole different world. When I lived in Florida for a while I dated a girl from New Windsor, and she would get off on being a "New Yorker" when she clearly wasn't...Maybe I'm just an asshole...

Superflossy...Where did you move from? I'm also slightly annoyed by folks who have the redneck accents and say they are also "New Yorkers"...I really am an asshole...Especially since I live in NJ. I'm only 10 miles away from Brooklyn, and the Stadium is a 20 min drive...

IMO upstate is like south NJ...just a whole different world.

@ Ocified:
I moved from Illinois, where I went to school. I don't really have any type of accent, although people always ask me if I'm from Cali. I actually don't like people from NJ, the "bridge and tunnel" crowd. To me, if you don't live or work in the 5 boroughs, you don't count as a New Yorker.

I wasn't trying to say I was...I was only saying that the folks who walk around and yak with a twang and then say they're NY"ers grinds my gears...

And I agree that it is very cool to see things you know in the game...I think it adds a ton for people who live/grew up here. I know what you mean about the tunnel bunnies...I don't like them and they live on my side...It hurts.

Ocified, I'm sure you're not the typical NJ guido. I was just having fun being an asshole! Now, move to my neighborhood and we'll all hang out!
