So.... My Xbox 360 Just Died
superbeefy2050 | 10:15 PM on 10.21.2008 20 comments

Yea.... Playing Unreal Tournament 3 on the 360 has decided to kill my Xbox 360. Now, its not the dreaded 3 red rings of death, its the 1 flashing red ring with an E47 error message. Now, after checking Xbox.com/support and trying out all their tomfoolery, I decided to call Xbox support to get a repair order.

After a lengthy conversation with the clueless rep, its been determined that my 360 is out of warranty. Apparently, the 3 red rings have a 3 year warranty. The 1 flashing red ring means a 1 year warranty and that expired on F*CKING OCTOBER 18TH.

Now a question for my fellow dtoiders with which I dont think has ever been asked before. How do I cause the 3 red rings. Yes, I am asking how to create the 3 red rings for my 360 so that I don't have to waste f*cking $99 to get a refurbished 360. Any ideas?
Or better yet, is there anyway to fix this 1 single red ring?

It would be more productive to find a receipt for your xbox, because the warranty should be honoured from the date of purchase, not the date of construction, unless you stood outside of a factory in Korea and took your unit off of the assembly line.
robotbebop's Destructoid Blog
Also, most OEMs give a 30 day grace period from the warranty end date for the very reason I stated above. I would just keep calling in until I found a rep with a few braincells, failing that try to escalate to a supervisor (Though I hate suggesting this because I used to be on the other end of similar calls.)

Failing all that, go to the consumerist. Not honoring a 30-day grace period with a system so publicly fraught with failure IS a concern for MS, despite any PR babble, and somebody at some level should be willing to do something given how close you are to the OOW date.

Tried calling twice. They said that there's nothing they can do since its out of warranty.
The receipt says I purchased it October 18th so yea....

You're ONE business day out of warranty. I'd still try the 30 day thing, call center drones (especially MS') stick to a rigid guideline and they never budge, because of the intense cover-your-ass atmosphere of bullshit call center politics.

Trust me, squeaky wheels get grease. be a prick if you have to. Or go to the consumerist. They do get attention AFAIK.

I should also stress that purposely damaging your system will definitely NOT help your cause.

But..... I just saw you online not that long ago....

Also, I don't think there is a way around this. I think you are just going to have to pay up.

Hmm. I've checked youtube and they've fixed it by doing the towel trick. They did it for 15 min, instead of 1 ring they had 2, they turned it off, and then turned it back on and it worked. I guess Ill try that....
The Incredible Edible Egg's Destructoid Blog
Towel trick goes both ways, also it resets the system, so it should work on one ring I'd imagine, at least force it to red ring. You know how to fix that one...
robotbebop's Destructoid Blog
Purposefully damaging your will NEVER, EVER end well, I personally know because I made a mistake of buying an Xbox 360 on eBay that had red-ringed, and the idiot had apparently tried to fix himself. When I phoned MS to see if it could be repaired they had sent it back UNREPAIRABLE.

DO NOT BREAK YOUR UNIT ON PURPOSE. Suck it up and pay the $99 or fight it out with MS, otherwise you'll be spending another $199 on a skeleton arcade unit.
superbeefy2050's Destructoid Blog
Yea, I'll probably end up getting an arcade or sending it in to get fixed. The towel trick did nothing btw.

My 360 did the same thing. 1 flashing red light, all that error jazz. Out of warranty for over a year and a half.

I just called them up, said I had red-ring, shipped it in and hoped the would fix it.

They did.

My theory is that if they're told it has a red ring, it's not worth their time to inspect every box that comes in, so they just replace the board and ship it back out same day.

But you may not be able to do that anymore, where they have your call/complaint issue on your record now.
brainderailment's Destructoid Blog
The single red light problem is nowhere near as popular as the RRoD, but nonetheless, it's a hardware issue. And (as you stated) it's not covered. I would leave the rear fan vents uncovered, but I would lay the console on it's side, and put a folded towel on top while laying it on carpet/another folded towel. If you wrap the console all the way up, it will shut off when it gets to a certain temp, but if you do it the way I recommend, it will continue to stay below emergency temp and warp the hell out of your mobo, causing the good 'ol RRoD.

Try overheating it.

I feel your pain, my 360's drive failed first and the next day it got RROD, talk about bad luck..

@Coxblaster
I used to work for a company and did repairs and refurbishing. The chances of not having your unit tested are slim, especially because those guys would be doing specifically repairs. I had to repair units to sell as the sales came in so some days were slower than others.

Really, its quite simple to simply plug in the necissary and flick it on to double check if you should bother with the unit or not.
Rational Animal's Destructoid Blog
I agree with Coxblaster. Lie. Just tell them it gave you the three-ringed RRoD. They'll fix it and probably won't even be the wiser.

As an example, my console just died this weekend and was alternating between one and three rings almost every time I reset the machine. I don't know how common that behavior is, but I can't imagine they've never seen it before. Just feed them some bullshit and let them sort it out.

Shame you don't live in england, we have have a sale of goods act that means that all electronic products should have a lifetime that is suited to the price. Such as a £1000 television shouldnt break in under two years and if it did the manufacturer is in the wrong for not replacing the product for you even if it is out of warranty.

Tell microsoft how long youve had it and kick up a fuss. it's bullshit.

 about me

19 Year old diabetic who lives in Acworth, Georgia (yes we say ya'll alot).

Used to work 2 jobs: 1 in the afternoon and 1 at night and therefore could never participate in FNF. That all changed when I said fuck you and walked out of the night job. Now I play every Friday.

History:
I'm a casual gamer that started playing the NES when I was 5. My uncle bought it for me and I fell in love with it. I was never really hardcore about games and therefore never heard about the SNES, Sega systems, or the original PS1 when they came out. Thanks to a friend of mine down the street, I heard about the N64 and begged my parents to buy me it. Got one and loved Goldeneye, SSB, Mario, and found out about Starcraft. Then I found out about the internet and thats when I became real hardcore about games. I got a PS2 for my 14th b-day and thats how I came to really, really love games. I jumped ship from Sony to Sexbox when I found out what kind of games were out for each system and now I'm a 360 fanboy.

I mostly play FPS and therefore I own a 360. Favorites: COD4 (omg yes), Halo 3 (meh), Orange Box, and Guitar Hero 3.

My name
In the 4th grade, my friends and I had the idea to come up with nicknames for each other. Cockroach for the kid who had a last name Roach. Einstein for the kid who was smart as hell. At the time, I was kinda big. So my name was Beefy. It stuck and I went all through elementary, middle, and high school with the name Beefy. As I learned about the internet and needed a scree name, I randomly came up with Superbeefy2005. 2005 didn't have any significance and the Super part was decided randomly. I then came up with Beefmaster5150 on my grandma's computer, but that wasn't as cool as Superbeefy2005, so I decided to merge the two and make Superbeefy2050. Bam, now I'm here looking for video game info and looking for people to play online.

Thats about it for me. Oh, I forgot to mention that the PS3 is an expensive paper weight and the Wii is a joke. I joke about it all the time to my friends. (Man I knew I should've gotten a Wii. Lets go to my house and play with my Wii. I wanna go to my house and play sports, ON MY WII!!!)
