Watchmen Game Screenshots
solidgoomba | 11:06 PM on 11.16.2008 20 comments

These were taken from what I believe to be a Czech site.
To my knowledge these haven't been posted yet. I have to say the game looks rather... generic. I'm still on the fence in regards to the movie, being a fan of the graphic novel and seeing how other adaptations of Alan Moore's works have gone, I'm not going to get too excited yet.

This seems to be the only screen of actual gameplay. I'm curious as to how the rage/power meters work.

I'm really not sure what more to say about it. I guess I'm hoping to see some more videos that prove to me this isn't just going to be a generic beat-em-up with the Watchmen characters thrown in.

HAWP Shirt + Contest Reminder
solidgoomba | 1:14 PM on 11.14.2008 8 comments

Continuing my recent custom shirt kick I made the shirt pictured for my gf, based on one of her favorite episodes of HAWP. I'm very pleased with how it turned out and I'm going to make my own once I can find a men's yellow shirt. Also, does anyone know where I can download the font that's used here on Destructoid often.
Edit: Found it, thanks Awkwardmongoose for pointing me in the right direction.

Also, as a reminder you have a little over two weeks to get your submissions in for my Katamari shirt contest found here

Custom Katamari shirt + Win Your Own
solidgoomba | 6:22 PM on 11.08.2008 9 comments

I just got finished making a Katamari shirt and I'm pretty satisfied with it, so I want to share it with everyone. The caption comes from my friend and I joking around while playing the game and discussing what would be in a Bad Ass Katamari. We decided the level would start out on the back of a tiger and as the Katamari got bigger the player could see the tiger was in the back of an airplane, the tiger would then jump out of the plane and land in Bad Assville. In Bad Assville the player would have to roll up mustaches, beards, lumberjacks, axes, Chuck Norris, etc.

Contest
So here's time for the contest! Simply leave a Katamari theme that you'd love to roll and what would be in said Katamari. All submissions must be in by Nov. 24th at midnight. On Nov. 25 a winner will be picked by a panel consisting of myself, my girl friend, and friend James. Anyone who wants to enter is welcome to, though if you live out of the U.S. I'll have to look into shipping since I'm just a poor college student. The prize is a shirt similar to the one I'm wearing, I'll make it custom for the winner so they can change the text and tell me their size and any color preference of the shirt itself.

I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't mind noming on Pacman or a 'shroom. And extra points for having both Snorlax and Munchlax.

Review: Little Red Riding Hood's Zombie BBQ
solidgoomba | 9:32 PM on 11.06.2008 6 comments

Some of you might remember this game from the contest hosted on here on Destructoid a little while back. Or worse yet the winning entry is still scarred into your retinas, but the game is finally out and I had a chance to play through it.

Can you get a better cover than this?

Story
When you first start up the game this is the only mode available. You have your choice of Normal or Hard difficulty and playing as Little Red Riding Hood or some other guy named Momotaro. (he's from some Japanese legend, but no one should care cause this is America! (The inclusion of this character is made odder since the developer is Spanish)) As far as I can tell there is no difference between the characters beyond cosmetics. Why anyone would choose not to play as LRRH is beyond me. Starting up the game I went through a short tutorial then onto the meat of the game. LIke most arcade style games there is very little in the way of story or cinematics. (You'll probably want to go back to the title screen to watch the intro video to get the backstory) That being said the little that is seen of a plot is told through the two main character's dialogue which also yields some nice character drawings. In her quest to stop the zombie outbreak LRRH will travel every where from the woods to grandmother's house to the North Pole, encountering such fairy tale creatures as the Three Bloody Little Pigs and Sleeping Beauty, hell a certain green monster even makes an appearance. The story mode suffers from being too short and then giving the player a half-ass, "please play through on hard to get the complete ending." The real flaw to this is the player can probably already guess who the final boss is and then he's blatantly shown in the ending credits. Upon completing the game on normal I received absolutely nothing for my efforts.

Sadly the only decent picture I could find of the actual LRRH model, no longer the blond that she was from early screens.

Gameplay
The player uses the stylus to direct LRRH's fire, dodge attacks, change weapons, and fire missiles. LRRH can only move along seven panels at the bottom of the screen which can be done with either the touchscreen or using the D-pad. The touch screen has the benefit of faster movement, but the player loses the ability to shoot and move, I opted for D-pad movement. Tapping on LRRH activates her dodge maneuver and double tapping activates missile; my complaint with this is often I'd end up moving instead of dodging due to an imprecise touch and wasting a missile when I just wanted to fire my gun. I rarely found myself using the few powerups scattered throughout the levels and didn't seem to suffer from not using them. Overall, the controls aren't bad, but did lead to some deaths.

Each level is broken up into three stages --- the third of which is a boss battle. The stages are on rail and often LRRH moves and at a snails pace laterally, often stopping to check out the surroundings as zombies spawn. If the player dies during a stage then they are sent back to the beginning of that particular stage, with no checkpoints. With each new level new enemies are introduced and some latter levels become quite hectic, quite true to SHMUP form. Some levels also introduce interesting gimmicks to make navigation even more difficult.

My Grandma, what rotting flesh you have

Graphics and Sound
Starting the game I was immediately greeted by either a cockney or bad Aussie accent reading the title, followed by the subdued voice of LRRH. By the end of the first tutorial stage I was sick of hearing "Ok," and not too much further into the game I was sick of the voices all together, not that there are many. The music is forgettable, but it works; sometimes hinting at a metal score that would really make the game even more awesome, but it never reaches this. The graphics are interesting; the player character models look like crap, but the enemies aren't too bad looking. Some enemies are very 2D and hand-drawn looking, while others are rendered in 3D. The 2D enemies can be shot to pieces, but this doesn't have any effect besides visuals. LIke the music, the graphics are adequate, but nothing memorable.

I just thought this pic was cute, note the blond LRRH

The Good
Fun Gameplay
Awesome title
Some funny moments

The Bad
Short
Only one mode unlocked intially
Lame ending

Bottom Line
If I were to rate this game purely based on it's title I'd say Game of the Year. If playing through a game multiple times in different difficulties then the length of the game is lengthened. For $19.99 it's hard to go wrong with LRRHZBBQ if you're a fan of old-school shooters. I can see this game either being a cult hit or bottom of the bargain bin, I hope for the former as I'd love to see a fleshed out sequel.

This review has balls! Dragon Ball DS Review
solidgoomba | 9:11 PM on 10.29.2008 3 comments

Last time I wrote an import game review I received some crap for not speaking Japanese and still writing a review, but I don't really care so FU! To the point of the review, I'm reviewing the Japanese Dragon Ball DS which will be out in the US sometime in December as Dragon Ball Origins. I approached the game with guarded optimism --- in elementary and middle school I was hurt time and time again by bad Dragon Ball Z games.

Story
The entirety of the game is covered in the story mode, no extra modes in sight, but I this isn't a bad thing. The game opens with a cut scene faithful to the original anime. (and possible manga, my only exposure has been to the anime) I was immediately impressed by the how faithful the character models were to Akira Toriyama's designs, not only this, but the character's were very expressive and lively. I can't read Japanese, but from the sheer amount of text I'd assume that most of the dialogue is faithful show. The story line covers the entire first season (first 26 episodes) of the Dragon Ball anime. There are eight levels broken up into a number of stages. to advance to the next level the player must play through the first four stages. Each stage varies in length --- some the size of dungeon in Zelda, others as short as a boss fight. An additional stage is unlocked after completing the first four, which may unlock another stage once completed. Once the player completes the game a number of other stages are unlocked in each level. The player can also use money found in the various stages to purchase health items, power-ups, and animation tests. There is no multi-player, but the player can share a demo of the game with a friend. I'd say that the main 24 stages of the game take 8-10 hours to play through.

I don't remember cougar hunting in the anime.

Gameplay
The game borrows heavily from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass in terms of gameplay. The game can be controlled solely using the touch screen. However, the player can use the D-pad to move and the trigger buttons to switch fighting styles and pull up the menu. On the subject of fighting styles Goku can fight using either his Power Pole or close quarters combat. Each style has six different moves that the player will unlock throughout the course of the game; these can be used both in combat and in solving puzzles. Yes, I said puzzles, while none of them are of Zelda caliber, they are a cute attempt. In a number of levels the Goku is accompanied by Bulma who does very little to aid the player in combat other than be someone to babysit. Most levels end in a boss fight which can be little more than an exercise in guarding and dodging, however some bosses play very similar to Zelda boss fights. These boss fights are one of the shining points of the game: the player will have to use their new abilities to exploit the boss's weakness. Occasionally the normal stages are preceded by a racing stage which requires the player to fly Goku on his Nimbus through obstacles. The touch screen responds well to the player's input, unlike some other games.

Let me show you MY Power Pole

Graphics and Sound
One of the things that initially drew me to this came was its graphics. All of the characters are well modeled and worlds look pretty good. The developers really managed to catch the style of the series, albiet its not too complex, and the game benefits from it greatly. The music was also pretty true to the series, with the full opening theme also present. As far as presentation goes this game really hit it and any Dragon Ball fan will be pleased. One down side is there is very little voice acting, but this is only a minor complaint.

If this had a giant robot I'd say it'd have everything an anime could hope to have.

Worth Importing?
If you're a fan the plot is easy to follow, thanks to the expressive characters, though if you don't have any knowledge of Japanese don't expect to understand what's being said. Any time that the player learns a new ability the game is kind enough to demonstrate how to activate the ability and the context which its useful in, there were only a handful of times that I was stuck and even then it wasn't for more than a couple of minutes. The game's menu's are very easy to follow, mostly because the important buttons are all illustrated. Despite being quite accessible for those of us who don't speak Japanese I have trouble recommending an import with the game's release stateside in only a couple of months. The only way I could recommend this as an import is if you MUST have your uncensored Dragon Ball. I can't speak for dialogue, but I do know the game includes some of the naughty comedy of the original, complete with Bulma flashing Roshi and Krillin handing the old perv smutty magazines. While I don't think these parts will get cut, I'm pretty sure a few scenes showing Goku's itty-bits will.

Besides full frontal Goku, this is as bad as it gets

The Good
The graphics and story are both very true to the anime.
Have I said I like the expressive characters?
There's a decent amount to do once the main game is over.
The game emulates LoZ:PH quite well

The Bad
Lack of voice acting is a bit of a bummer.
Having to look at little imp Krillin

You stupid, smug, little imp, I can't stand looking at you! Where the eff is your neck?

Bottom Line
If you're a fan of Dragon Ball than there's no reason not to get this game. I have played some real crappy DB games and I'm glad to see one that's actually decent. If you're neutral on DB and liked Phantom Hourglass I'd also have say the game is worth checking out when it comes stateside in December.
