Feel the Hatred: Motion Sickness
sleepingagain | 5:09 PM on 09.03.2008 8 comments

So im not sure if it came with age, or just fancy new graphics but something has happen to my ability game happily.

So I had been a avid gamer most of my life, I spent my youth dumping many quarters in to “Street Fighter 2” machines, but for about 3 or 4 years I stepped away from gaming, mainly just because I could not afford to buy anything (and im poor).

Then after a long hiatus on gaming I finally got to check out this epic “Half-Life” game everyone was raving about. So I had gone to a friends house, sat down on his PC and started to play this fucking amazing game but something odd was happening. I started to get a stomach ache and I didn't think much of it but I kept playing till I got to the point to where I HAD to lay down.

I didn't think much of it, cause I didn't own a PC at the time that could run half-life, so most of the games (rgps, platformers) I was playing didn't have that effect on me.

Then came the day I got a copy of GTA3, and I realized every time I played the game it made me feel dizzy and nauseous.

Then I realized the sad realization that this awesome game was not going to be played cause my stomach. And since that day I keep finding myself playing games and never really sure which ones are going to make me feel like shit and which ones are just fine.

But yeah, fuck you motion sickness...

High FPS gives me motion sickness after some 10 or so minutes.
Thus I am an anti FPS whore.

Try moving your monitor back a bit, that might help.

all the HL2 and source games make me feel ill because the character moves so smoothly. the camera doesn't bounce when the character walks.
HL2 messes with me, while Halo 3 doesn't.

GTA on the other hand... that's odd.

Hmmm. Maybe try not being poor. Only poor people get motion sick. Kidding. You need a point of reference in the real world. It sucks because it's a game breaker, but you need to have an easily seen object that you can notice with your peripheral vision while playing. It's the same principle as staring at the horizon while your on a boat.

I know a guy at work who can't play FPS games because it makes him sick. I feel really bad for the guy since he's missing out on so many great titles.

I honestly think it's a rare thing among gamers. Maybe try taking those pills they give for boat sickness.
