Resident Evil 5: An airing of grievances
sickNasty | 6:43 AM on 02.18.2009 20 comments

Hi there, allow me to grab a bat and beat this very dead horse just one more time.

Keep in mind that this is coming from a relatively objective point of view. Of the “classic” Resident Evil titles, I’ve only played the second one for about 10 minutes. I’ve also never owned a Gamecube or PS2, thus keeping me playing from RE4. Although Leon’s 14 year old haircut turned me off as well.

"I love Hot Topic and talking about obscure bands on MySpace.”

So that brings me to the RE5 demo, without any preconceived notions of how the series “should” be.

The game creates a very good first impression. The graphics, animation, and atmosphere are excellent. The hit detection is out of this world. The way bodies react differently depending on where they are being shot is amazing. It is something I always want to see more of in games. I also love that you can uppercut an enemy when they are stunned.

And then there are the unnecessarily frustrating and archaic controls. Yeah, you knew this was coming.

In 2009, how do we still have an action game that requires the player to stop moving to fire a weapon, or even to just aim? Sure the common responses from fans are that “This game isn’t about running and gunning” or “It’s not realistic to be able to move while shooting.”

Yes, in a gritty game like this you shouldn't be able to run and gun. But anyone without Parkinson's can accurately shoot while at least walking.

Sorry Marty.

How is it not realistic to be able to move while shooting? Do special forces kick a door down and then just stand there trying to shoot enemies inside? Do soldiers still form lines and take turns shooting across a battlefield? If you were surrounded on all sides by a crazed flesh-eating mob, would you remain still to line up every shot perfectly?

And yeah if you shoot while jogging or running your accuracy should take a hit. But you should at least have the option of doing something that is not that difficult to do. It’s incredibly frustrating when I can’t get my highly trained and physically fit character in a video game to do stuff that my lame ass can do in real life.

"I can’t walk and chew gum at the same time!"

And then there’s the other claim that this limiting control scheme is a good thing because it maintains the survival horror vibe. This is bull, as even fans state that since RE4, the series has become an action game. Never mind the ridiculousness of the idea that a developer should artificially inhibit the controls in the name of preserving suspense. A feeling of helplessness should come from the atmosphere and challenge of a game, not from the fact that the player is helpless in getting his character to do what he wants.

In fact, the clunky controls contribute to the lack of suspense. Throughout the demo, I saw infected come sprinting from a distance, only to stop 10 feet in front of me to shamble forward at a snail’s pace. How did they suddenly lose the ability to run once they got close? This is clearly done to accommodate the controls, and it makes the game like a shooting gallery. You stand there shooting while zombies slowly shamble into your sights. That’s supposed to be scary?

"Slower guys. Remember, we’re paid by the hour."

Worse yet, how is it that Chris Redfield can’t reload or use a knife while moving? I loved having a zombie attack me while my character stands completely still, calmly reloading his weapon.

And nothing took me out of the action like hacking a zombie with my machete, watching as he staggered out of range, and then waiting as he shambled back into range before I could hit him again. Of course the other option was putting the knife away, running towards the enemy, taking the knife back out, and then slicing again.

I’ll be able to hit him again any minute now…

Listen, I don’t play much survival horror. But I think clunky combat is more understandable in a genre that emphasizes psychological terror and features everyman protagonists. But RE5 is a third-person action game with seriously outdated controls. My beef is that Capcom is bringing that kind of weak sauce to a genre I enjoy.

Hell, the original Splinter Cell allowed you to move while aiming a weapon.... in 2002. And that game discouraged large fire fights, it didn’t require you to shoot hordes of enemies..

Could you imagine if other genres didn't see progress in their controls? How about if FPS's on consoles still controlled like Goldeneye?

What gets me is Capcom's response to this. One of their PR people recently said “I don’t wanna see it, because then it’s not Resident Evil.”

Really? So changing the controls would suddenly make the game no longer Resident Evil? If that’s their attitude, then why did they go from a stationary camera to the over-the-shoulder view? Why are backgrounds no longer pre-rendered?

So is this the only game that truly is Resident Evil?

Technology improved, thus allowing those early limitations to be eliminated. Capcom should check out another handy piece of technology, dual analogs.

It is always trumpeted that gameplay > graphics, yet I find that this belief doesn’t apply to Resident Evil 5. All the time you see highly anticipated games with otherwise high production values get trashed due to subpar controls. But the franchise history and large fanbase of Resident Evil appears to buy RE5 a free pass on this particular front

I’m not saying that RE5 is going to be a horrible game. I touched on some of the good things I think it brings to the table. But it is in light of the positives that I find the outdated controls all the more frustrating. I keep reading things like "The game is a lot of fun, once you get used to the controls." I say don't settle for that crap. Sure an amputee can have a very enjoyable life once they adjust to it, but that doesn't mean he should have lost his leg to begin with.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to run around all day with a knife in my hand. Because I can.

I think it's interesting to see a series like Resident Evil be condemned for either not changing enough or changing too much. The whole hoo-hah that was raised over the controls was interesting, because it seems like that's what people identify the series with, and survival horror at the same time.

"I can't walk and chew gum at the same time": sublime captioning sir!

If you want to move while shooting, just a play a different game. Seriously. Resident Evil can be the game where you stop and shoot, and millions of other action games you can move & shoot. I don't see why people won't leave this be. Capcom themselves have new action games. Dark Void, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, etc.

Along with Dan Citi.

You can't do it. Deal with it or don't play it. Won't stop me from loving it.

Here's what i believe.
First, Resident evil never, EVER was good enough for people to get all over it like this. Chill the fuck out guys! People complain about tomb raiders being the same, and god dammit if all REs until four are a copy paste with few abilities added. Let's not get into the story. Or lack of it.

Second, Tank controls worked because the zombies were slow as shit but ammo was scar..s?e. So... yeah. Running and shooting should be ideal for killing normal people. And that brings me to point 3....

Third, It's not that hard. I mean. Jesus. I can't be that difficult. It's a perfectly beatable game. What exactly is the problem?

Fourth, it doesn't matter what we think. Controls and gameplay are what controls and gameplay are. Maybe RE6.

The issues you had are some of the same issues I had with RE4. Awesome game, loved it, played it like a dozen times, still don't know why the useless knife was given a pass. In RE4, enemies would do the same charge-stop-shamble so you would have the chance to shoot them and it was kind of lame then too.

What lots of people fail to realize is that acknowledging flaws in RE4 & 5 isn't condemning the whole game. It's disappointing that after re-releasing RE4 three fucking times that none of that money seemed to go toward fixing flaws or making improvements in the RE4 formula. It's the exact same game. No, no one is saying that RE5 needs to reinvent the wheel like RE4. No, saying "it's Capcom" doesn't make a homogeneous sequel acceptable. "Bawww, leave resident evil alone!" is exactly the opposite of what we should do. Even if you take forced stationary shooting as required for the series, they could have improved movement and aiming controls, given you a useful melee attack, made new character animations or developed some new enemies--I've seen the list, it was here on destructoid, and if you replace "majini" with "ganado" it's nigh indistinguishable from RE4. By saying "Hey Capcom, we want you to make this even better" we will get a better game and by eating it up we're just going to ensure they don't do jack for the inevitable RE6.

Really, it's annoying to see "it's for hardcore fans of re4" type excuses. No true Scotsman, right? I want the series to improve because I am a fan, but after the demo, I just don't have $60 worth of desire to play damn near the same game without knowing that something new comes in later.
Qraze's Destructoid Blog
i don't like the series anymore after code veronica. capcom took the campy formula and changed it so the mainstream masses would enjoy it. re1 is the best and bioshock has more in common with the first game in terms of the backstory of the enviroment and horror aspects then the rest as far as i'm concerned. but bioshock is more of explorer horror than survival unless you're playing it on impossible like i am right now.

i did not like the demo.

@TREV:

Thank you. That's exactly what I was trying to say.

I agree with you, but you know you've got a lot of people sneering at you for this.

I agree with you. The "gameplay > graphics" argument is all i need validate my argument to myself.

I'm not going to argue with you over your opinion. It's become painfully obvious that there are pretty much two different types of people: Those who love it, and those who do not.

As it is, I love it. I loved Resident Evil 4 and count it among the greatest games of all time, but that's just my opinion. I am sad so many people don't like it, but what can I do? I'm not going to sit here and try and convince you that it's great.

The only thing I can say is this: You've never been able to move and shoot in RE, and the series has proven highly popular throughout the years. So why would Capcom change what is considered a winning formula? They changed things up after the first 3 games, perhaps they'll change and let you move in RE6. Until then, I'll be loving every moment of RE5 while you aren't.

No harm done to either of us or anyone else. I know it's hard to sit and watch a lot of people praise a game as amazing and give it high review scores when you don't get it and don't like it. But such is the way of the world; Different people like different things.

If you want to move whilst shooting, there are a plethora of choices for you out there from the current generation of games. So just move on to something else.
tallica710's Destructoid Blog
what the hell people. why, why cant you understand what the writer of this post is trying to say? He obviously knows that there are other games he can play where running and shooting is possible. However, does that mean that he cant state his opinion(Very valid i may add) on this game? Sometimes i think you people get so attached to these games that if anyone points out a negative to it, you feel the need to bash them. Listen, people say that video games are another form of entertainment, like movies.

Well guess what, if I was watching a zombie movie, and the zombies slowed down while approaching their victim, id think its lame as hell. If the main character fighting the zombies had to stop and aim before shooting or slicing a knife, id think its lame as hell. Dont get so defensive. you are all wrong. He complimented the games good features. He just pointed out glaring retarded mistakes.
EternalDeathSlayer's Destructoid Blog
Tallica710: First off, I'm not attacking the guy at all. Second, no we are not wrong in our opinions, no more than he is right or wrong with his opinion.

The lack of movement while attacking, however retarded, was a deliberate design choice made by the developers of RE4. That game sold very well and was also the choice for Game of the Year for many publications or websites.

So I ask this question again: Why would Capcom change something that was so highly praised only 4 years ago? Why would the alienate the many people who do happen to like this style of gameplay?

You may not like it, which is fine, but you have no right to tell people they are wrong for enjoying a game the way it was meant to be.

@Eternaldeathslayer:
I think Tallica was referring to some of the other comments here.

100 cocktails to you for being the only one to get my Seinfeld reference.

I know he wasn't talking to me directly, but he lumped us all together with comment.

And I just really wanted to explain to the poor soul the idea of having an opinion that can be neither right nor wrong.
tallica710's Destructoid Blog
you know what eternal, stop. stop your nonsense. because something sells well, it doesnt mean its good. ok? Britney Spears sold millions of albums. That does not make it good.

Fine, your logic of "why would capcom change" is udnerstandable, from a marketing perspective. however, it doesnt make it NOT retarded that you cant run and shoot.

you people make me sick.
The Big Bad Wolf's Destructoid Blog
God forbid theres a survivor/horror shooter where children can't run and gun.
sickNasty's Destructoid Blog
@Big Bad:

Next time read the post before commenting. I clearly state I'm not saying you should be able to straight up run and gun.

Also, I'm not talking about survival horror. RE5 is clearly a 3rd person action game. Again, that's in my post.
silvain's Destructoid Blog
you can run and shoot in Fatal Frame.
(and your pics aren't even blurry)
Fatal Frame is scarier than RE4.
???
Profit.

Also, RE4 Wii >> RE5

 about me

I was raised on the Commodore and 386 computers, and then Sega Genesis. Thus my gaming identity was formed by a steady diet of Shareware(one word: Apogee), floppy disks, and rented Genesis games.

From there I went into the pupae stage with the Saturn and Nintendo 64, emerging from my cocoon with an Xbox.

These days, my time is spent on my 360 and Dreamcast. My PSP mostly finds use as an awkward mp3 player.

I work in advertising in NYC. As a graduate of PSU, when I'm not playing games or murdering vagrants, I'm following college football(JoePa is my religion)
