About Me
Hi there!

From my header, it is easy to tell that Mario games, Assassins Creed and Dragon Quest 8 are amongst my favourite games, I do prefer games with fantastic stories or fantastic game play. Both together are preferable, yet rare.

Renting games. Is it better than buying?

I bring this up as it is relevant to my current gaming situation. I've rented Burnout: Paradise, and though with confusing thoughts at first it is a neat game, I wonder if it is better renting. See, I'm confused, 2008 has severe promise for being a fantastic year in titles. Already we have No More Heroes, Turok, Devil May Cry 4 and well Burnout: Paradise. With the advent of downloading the demos straight to your console (not applicable to Wii... sadly) for free, why rent?

Renting a game at Rogers is around 7 bucks in the end (with our wonderful Canadian taxes). A brand new game is around 65 dollars in the end, and you get it longer than five days. The demos give you a nice savory taste of a piece of the delicious game play of a game, making you crave the full features and if so the story.

All that being said, the Devil May Cry 4 demo left me slightly confused, probably due to the lack of substance. The Turok demo has also left me confused, thinking the game is stupid yet fun. I'm glad I've rented Burnout, as I wouldn't buy it. For one reason that just makes my decision is that if your playing a racing game, its nice to have real cars. I mean obviously you like cars, so actually virtually driving a Ferrari 559 would be sweet. Really sweet... Burnout has fake cars, and it makes it hard to really enjoy the models. Good game play aside from a confusing map.

Anyways, I suppose there is the fact that with a console game you can always return it once bought. Although once renting, that 7 dollars is down the drain, and after renting Tony Hawk's Proving Ground when it came out, I really felt as though I had wasted 7 dollars. Its not much but boy when a game sucks, you really feel bad.

Do you guys now prefer demos and buying, or renting then buying, or just demos or renting?

I usually only rent games that I don't see myself replaying all that much, or games I'm not too sure about.
Also does Rogers still have late fees for games?Cause I'll start renting there if they don't, only because Blockbuster is a whopping $9 - $10 (forget the price) to rent. But they don't have late fees.

Rent only if you're unsure, and then return and buy if you like. Also, rent games like Ghost Squad for the Wii. 3 hour long games aren't worth of 50 or 60 dollars.

In short, it's better to buy. That's how you support game creators and in turn they make more good games.

Yeah, buying helps make more games, but with budgets its hard to buy all the games you want. Choices, most of the time, tough choices must be made.

Like the others have said, renting is great for games that you'll never play again, or unsure about wanting to own in the first place.

Having said that, nothing beats having a stash of great games that you can play at your leisure.

@Twisted Imp

Blockbuster is mega expensive! I rented 2 games and it was $19.xx, I just about had a heart attack. Rogers is like $5 per game/movie. I have not gone back to BB since they upped thier prices. Why should I pay for dicks that keep games/movies for months on end?

Also, I want implying that you were a dick, I was generalizing.

I personally never rent games. I love having a large collection of games. It's really the ultimate E-peen.

See, my thing is, I'm spending way to much per month buying (5-6 games usually). If I rent though I could potentially cut down on some of those costs. Tough choice either way.

I never rent games. I like having a collection I can go back to and play from when things are slow.

I have GameFly and love it. It's allowed me to play quite a few titles I never would have touched otherwise. I still buy my fair share of games, but usually reserve purchases for worthy titles such as Smash and GTAIV (my Spring line up thus far).

Renting from the old fashioned model is nothing short of retarded these days. Game rentals were 99 CENTS when I was a kid. This $7 for a rental nowadays is compete and utter bullshit.

With all the reviews and demos and videos you can get off the internet these days, you can still get a pretty good idea about a game without renting it.

And some guys here use Gamefly and it sounds nice, plus I think you can just buy the games when rented if you really like them. If you wanted, you could essentially use Goozex in the same way as well, getting enough points to have a new game traded to you, then trading that game back off when you are done with it.

Typically at least one of my friends purchases any game I'm interested in but haven't bought myself, so we just swap among ourselves. If this isn't an option for you, make more gamer friends with disposable incomes.

I play on PC, so I download pirated versions of the game and if I like it I buy it. If I don't like it after a day or two, I delete it.

Rent games that you don't think will warrant you a $60 worth of play time.

If you regularly rent games, get GameFly... it's totally worth it. You can rent a game until you beat if you want.

btw....you read videogame´s reviews ?

I do, but it does come down to opinions. I read Gamespot reviews and post reviews, and sometimes I give higher scores and sometimes lower scores. Reviews are good though (if they are a good reviewer) for providing a good summary of the game. After sticking to certain IPs mostly, I'm noticing a serge in new franchises that are actually good, so its becoming increasingly difficult to make the tough choice of a 60 buck purchase.
