About
Hi, I'm Shaxam.
I write things a lot of the time and only publish them sometimes and that's OK. Destructoid is a second home to me and I'm so grateful to everyone who works to make this site what it is.
Ah, and videogames! I like them. My favorite console of all time is the Wii, and my favorite game of all time is Skyward Sword.
Other games I like include Xenoblade Chronicles, Final Fantasy 6, The Binding of Isaac, Hotline Miami, Thief 2, and Cart Life.

Hey guys! Ever since I was a child I've dreamed of making games, and now that dream is (kind of) a reality. I stumbled upon a program called gamemaker not too long ago, and liked the idea of making a game without having to deal with any coding. So this is what I've got so far:
http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/games/201868-rainbobot-wip

Web link

The game's called Rainbobot, and it's premise is pretty simple. Your a robot tasked with saving the helpless rainbopeople from the evil gray dudes. Think "de Blob" meets megaman. But not nearly as good. I haven't been working on it for that long, and I've still got a ton to do with the game, but I decided to post it and see if I can get any advice or feedback from anyone. I want to add more levels and make the graphics a lot more appealing because as they stand, they're pretty ugly. The jumping needs fixing and I want to give players more incentive to save all the little people. I've still had a blast making it so far, and I'm hoping that I continue to have fun with it.

Feedback would be greatly appreciated guys!

I shall be checking this out later.
OK, wow that's not easy. But it's not bad either. NOT BAD AT ALL.

Jump is floaty, but I see what you're after. Especially with rainbopeople in midair between platforms. Tricky, and exhilirating to pull off. I just think the responsiveness of the double-jump needs to be tweaked somehow. There's just no telling how far that second jump is going to send you. Sometimes it's too shallow, sometimes you overshoot, but obviously my 'Z' key is not pressure sensitive, so something's amiss in the math there.

I like how the big dudes take damage and get upset that you're shooting them in the face (understandably.) Nice little touch. I look forward to more expressiveness from the other characters. That's especially important for a game with a minimal aesthetic.

Overall, a very good start. Also, I now want a bright red T-shirt that says "You Let a Guy die Press R," in your MS Paint mousewriting.

Hope you enjoy it!

Haha, thank you so much! You have no idea how good it feels to get feedback like that! I'll definitely try to tweak the jumping, you're right it is kind of unresponsive and floaty. Thanks for the advice about making characters more expressive, it's something I need to work on. And I'll get on that shirt right away :D Thanks so much!
HOLY SHIT THIS THING BREAKS MY MIND DOOD!

Well, I'm still playing it, so that's the ultimate compliment, right? But thing is a clever, tough little fucker. I really, really love the tension acheived by putting a big dude drawing ever closer to a rainboperson all the way at the end of the board.

But seriously, I'd suggest balancing the challenge a bit. Either play with the speed that some bullets travel so that the player has the time to, y'know, think, or give the bot a little one-hit shield that you can tap to deflect a single shot. In fact, the shield mechanic could play into some of your puzzles quite nicely, especially if some rooms have a shield recharge and using it is necessary to get to the goal.

Lastly, mappable keys would be nice, because it's like playing on a backwards controller with the current config. I keep shooting when I want to move, jumping when I want to shoot, and vice versa. Leads to a lot of cheap deaths.

Just spitballing, 'cause I'm pretty sure I've reached an impossible room and even though it's minimized I can hear it taunting me.
@DynamoJoe
I think I know the room your talking about, it's pretty brutal hehehehee...
That shield mechanic sounds pretty awesome, I'll definitely play around with it, and mappable buttons are no problem!
If I ever do finish the game I'll put you in the credits fo sho', thanks for everything!
No probs. Keep at it. I look forward to future iterations. A nod in the credits would be rad!
