About Me
My grandfather got me my first console; it was an NES. I fell in love with RPG's thanks to FF7 in highschool. My husband introduced me to manga and anime in college; it all went downhill from there. You can pry my '95 Mustang GT convertible (with the Windsor 5.0) out of my cold, dead hands. I like a broad variety of game types, but most FPS's give me simulation sickness, which blows. I was inspired to create game based hats after seeing a Neko hat from some con pictures. I figured I could do much cooler job.

Bomberman Hat Expose Part 1
shadowsinthenyte | 11:00 PM on 04.14.2009 4 comments

Once upon a time in the 1980's I fell in love with the episodes of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and Reading Rainbow where the host would do an expose on how something was made or done; textiles, books, street signs, diners, you name it. So in that spirit I'm going to guide you through how to make a crocheted game themed hat (for cloth/fleece you need to beg knowledge from Rio McCarthy; I don't deal with it). I've been eyeballing the Bomberman Live advertising banners on the site and he looks like a relatively easy creation so lets give it a try.

Step 1: Concept.
Themed hat vs. cosplay style hat? Some characters like Megaman, Black Mage and Mario just lend themselves to making hats that look just like what they wear. Bomberman, not so much. Lets try a themed hat that looks like his head.

Step 2: Research
Bomberman has had a few subtle design changes in the twenty six years he's been around. We need to pick which one we want to use.

Here's our boy looking sharp in the early 90's.

Then the anime influence took over.

Oh God why!?! My eyes! My eyes!
Lets go with something in between the first and second. We're going to need white yarn for the base, a peach/flesh tone for the face, black for the eyes and a reddish tone for the bobble. A base beanie with the extra bits sewn on should do the trick. Time to do a...

Step 3: Mock up
The easiest way to see if something will work without putting tons of time into it is to create a mock up using simple materials. I've got a spare base beanie lying around, so we'll make the bits and pieces out of paper to see what it'll look like assembled.

Looking sharp. I think this will work. Next time I'll go over making the parts and assembling them. Will it all work out? Will it look like crap? Stay tuned.

I wanna follow the progress on this. I was thinking you were gonna do a life-sized Bomberman head/helmet, but I like the idea of a whatever-that-is better. Will the pompom base be rigid and unmoving, or will it have some bounce to it?

@DOOMSDAY FORTE: I'm going to crochet the "stalk" and pompom, then stuff them with fiber fill. It should hold up on it's own and bounce a little when you run. You'll be able to hold it down by hand and it should spring right back up into position.
