About Me
I'm a 26 year old gamer living in Texas. I'm a huge RPG nerd with somewhat of a penchant for good FPSs (BF3). I'm also a huge media junkie, though no reality TV. Graduated from college in 2007 and found a job. The extra income is great, but sadly it comes at the expense of having a lot less time to play games/watch TV. I own a 360, PS3, PS2 and Gamecube.

I'm currently playing:

Dragon Age 2
Battlefield 3(Occasionally)
Dark Souls
Uncharted 3

Need time to finish:
Persona 3
Odin Sphere
FFIV DS
Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria

Really want to start:
Persona 4
Chrono Trigger DS
Star Ocean: Last Hope

TV Shows currently watching:
Chuck
House
Big Bang Theory
How I Met Your Mother
Castle
Modern Family
Fringe
Supernatural
The Office
30 Rock
Burn Notice
Weeds
Entourage
Californication
Mad Men
Spartacus
Young Justice
Star Wars The Clone Wars

DS homebrew help
seltzermx | 10:07 PM on 07.31.2008 19 comments

I was wondering if I could get you guys' opinion on the homebrew options for the DS. I know the 3 main options are the CycloDS, M3 and R4DS. Would you guys recommend one over another? I know R4 is more well known, but I've heard great things about the CycloDS. And I really don't know much about the M3. Technical competence isn't really a factor for me (I run DD-WRT and other modded stuff on my hardware), and price isn't really a factor either.

I'm not really into game piracy. Heck, I bought both the US and Japanese version of FFIV cause I liked the cover for the Japanese one. But I do like the added functionality that these cards offer, like music and videos and stuff.

If you guys don't think this blog is appropriate for the site, let me know, and I'll hide it. Or if you prefer not to respond here, please PM me.

Thanks guys.

P.S. - FFIV DS is awesome!! Can't wait for Chrono Trigger!!

I dunno about homebrew, but CycloDS is preferred among the pseudo-hardcore snobbish hackers/pirates/etc. Plus it offers some extra features (I think save/load states?) that the R4 doesn't have.

I use the r4 and it works great; I've never heard of Cyclo (but I haven't looked at devices since I bought my r4 last year).

I think that m3 and r4 are the exact same product with a different name.

M3 DS Real has had some compatibility issues, though. R4 Revolution or M3 Simply would probably be your best bets.

Also, Heretic, I thought you liked beeing a dick to people?

Hahaha, thanks for the help guys.
Meh, I don't want to spend the money for a PMP, but I saw i think it was an 8GB Cyclo for like 50, so I might get that. Plus I saw that R4 is limited to 2GB, so thats barely any capacity. Do you guys know what video formats/codecs any of these play?

And see, Heretic can be nice if he sets his mind to it.

Bassically, if you want functionality, they all work. R4's are easy, and the interface is pretty.

I personally have a EZ Flash V+ (it can use SDHC cards) and it works like a charm, no hang up's so far, and its a bit more customizable then other cards.

I would also recommend you purchase the EZ 3-in-1 as well (which works with all the major cards: R4, M3, Cyclo, EZ, etc.)
Which basically works as a GBA Flash Cart(for loading back-ups and homebrew gba games), a Rumble pack, and a ram cart that the DS opera browser uses, as well as certain Homebrew apps, like the Neogeo Emulator.

I would also suggest going to dealextreme, as I have used them quite a few times in the past, and they have yet to bone me. Bonus is they have a lot of stuff to pick from, including case replacements, gadgets, cheapy stuff, this one thing called a OneStation, which looks awesome, and even some games. Only set back is that it takes roughly 2-4 weeks to get what you ordered, especially around holidays.

Keep in mind, to watch movies or tv shows on the DS, you will need to convert the m to DPG files.

If you need any other help feel free to shoot me a line, I'll see what i can do.

I have an R4 and Supercard Lite here for myself. I use my Supercard to store all of my music and a movie or two. I used my R4 mainly as an organiser with DSOrganise and use the rest of it's space for a flash drive at work. Some really nice homebrew games out their. My favourite by far is Arcomage which I find myself playing everyday I come home from work

Don't be a dick.

Everybody that says that is just pirating every game they can get their hands on. Don't make yourself look innocent.

rabble rabble... its kinda like people who say they use their R4 for DSOrganize and homebrew games. Never said I was innocent, I was just stating what the actual use is. I'm not getting into the whole pirating thing, its to late, and it always ends in lots of bawwwwing. I'm just helping the guy out, so back up off my dick.

Supercard DS one, or a EZ Flash 3-in-1 if you want GBA games but lesser DS rom support. Or do what I did and get both.
