Need suggestions on a good ps2 game...
seigfreid | 7:13 PM on 01.21.2009 42 comments

So I bought a ps2 about a month ago and I have 2 games for it ( SotC and Persona 4) both are great (especially Persona 4) but I am craving a new game. Preferably an action game. I have heard really good things about Metal Gear Solid: 3 and God of War 2. But I am also looking into Silent Hill 2. So which one do you think I should get? Or should I get another game altogether? I also saw some videos on Tenchu and it looks pretty cool but i dont know if its that good. Are the Fatal Frame games good? So anyways give me some suggestions on ps2 games.

Forums are that way. -------------->

Oh ya, they are broken.

I'm not really the person to ask for this. I do own God of War II, but I haven't even started playing it yet. Persona 4 is taking up all my time at the moment.

I just got a PS3 in the summer time, and so far I have bought 4 PS3 games for it, and 8 games for the PS2 inside it :) If you are interested in getting the Metal Gear Solid games, I suggest the Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection. It's a great deal, I found one for $40.

Get MGS:3, or, better yet, Okami (if you can find a copy). It's better than most Zelda games.

Lets see... Silent Hill 2 is pretty spiffy. I'd go with SH 3, for the pooping of the pants factor. Odin Sphere and Rogue Galaxy are also pretty good. I, the life of me, can't remember any other PS2 games I have played recently besides the ones I have in my collection.

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven isn't fantastic, but if you're a fan of the Tenchu series at all (or just ninjas), it's worth picking up-- I had a lot of fun with it.

Ico if you liked SotC though that might be tought to find. I also really liked Disgaea 1 and 2, Katamari Damacy, The Red Star, Final Fantasy X, SSX3, Resident Evil 4, Indigo Prophecy, Beyond Good & Evil, and Psychonauts. Just of the top of my head. You should grab Persona 3 too.

Metal gears are good. I like 2 better than 3, but it's a personal choice. God of war is good too.

Devil May cry 3?
Black? a short, but well made FPS. Probably you're better renting that one.
Yakusa 2?
Ace combat 4, 5 and zero were pretty good.

Then you have GTAs, Silent hill 2-3-4, ICO, Fatal Frame(like silent hill), many dynasty warriors, and one improved half life that people fail to mention. I can't think of anything else, i'm shooting in the dark here.

Well...if you like Persona 4 (and 3) and have money to spend, go find Nocturne.

SSX 3 or GUN.

Thank me later.

Really, there are so many great games, I don't know where to start. For an obscure and overlooked gem, try Alter Echo.

I highly suggest buying the Yakuza series. Yakuza 2 is better, and it has a nice CG recap of 1 at the beginning.

If Fur Fighters was anything like it was on the Dreamcast, I'd recommend that since you can find it for cheap and it was amazing. And by amazing, I mean that you'll go to bed crying every night since there was no sequel ever planned.

Dragon Quest VIII if you like RPGs.

Tekken 5 and about 1,000 2D fighters available now if you like fighters.

Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven is the best Tenchu game yet, if you like that sort of thing.

Silent Hill 3 definitely if you like the horrors.

Also... I can't forget about Way of the Samurai. This game can't be very expensive at all by now and it was so unique. Such a cool game.

Other than that, just try some shit that looks good to you, the games are pretty inexpensive now.

It all depends on the genre of game you like. I'll lay out my favorites for you real quick. Before I start though, I'd get Okami on the Wii over the PS2. The brush stuff is much more cumbersome on the PS2. On the Wii, it takes a little getting used to, but if you remember to hold the Z button down when doing straight lines, you'll do fine.

Back to the list of PS2 games:

Comedy- The Katamari games

Spy Thriller- Metal Gear Solid 3

Beat Them Up- God Hand

Turn based Strategy- Disedea (or however you spell it)

2D Platformer- Mega Man X8

SotC prequel- Ico

Jean Reno Samurai Adventure- Onimusha 3

Creepiest of the creepy: Rule of Rose

And that's all I can think of right now. There are tons of other quirky titles like Under the Skin and Chulip that I want to recommend, but can't unless I knew you better.

Red Dead Revolver is an amazing alternative to GUN - it's an amazing spaghetti western brought to life on a console.
MGS3 is tough to control if you're not used to the series, but I will say it has the best gameplay, story presentation, actual story, and challenge.
(I recommend getting the box set for all 3 games)
DMC3 is the pinnacle of action game perfection, though unforgiving on harder difficulties.
(I recommend getting the box set for DMC1 and DMC3:SE)
God of War games are also entertaining action titles, though they're not as refined as DMC3.
Ico is a no-brainer.
Okami is, without a doubt, an amazing platformer - much better than Twilight Princess.
GTA3, Vice City, SA are still fun, with SA giving you the most options in terms of what to do around the ~15 square miles in game.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica X is a blast, and the last true RE game in terms of survival horror.
Silent Hill is a great series in the horror genre as well.
(I'm not personally familiar with the Fatal Frame games, but I've heard good things.)

I'm merely echoing other comments here, but if it helps, then I shall echo away:

Dragon Quest VIII: Let me put it to you this way. When I was in college, there were five copies of this game lying about in the apartment I shared (One for each of the roommates and one from another guy who would crash often and leave it there on accident.) This was when it first came out. We were so afraid that the other would take their copy home and leave us Dragon Quest-less that this approach was merely necessity. We were also probably batshit crazy. But yes, it is a fine RPG with many hours for the price now ($9.99!)

I just beat Persona 3, and I recommend that highly as well.

Other things off the top of my head I rather enjoyed:
The MGS Box Set, King of Fighters 2006, Suikoden III and V.

Mega Man Anniversary Collection is one of the best purchases I ever made for PS2, so check that out if you're into those games. Both God of War games are incredibly fun, too, so I wouldn't hesitate to pick those up.

Since you're into anime, there are a few niche games that may be interesting to you. There's a Samurai Champloo game called "SC: Sidetracked" or something, but I don't know if it's any good or not. Naruto stuff is all over, there are DBZ fighting games (Budokai 3 is the best of them), Gundam games like Zeonic Front (squad-based robot combat), and a bunch of other stuff that I'm forgetting.

@Seigfreid: You still haven't answered the question of why you are JUST NOW getting a PS2. Seriously man, the PS3 has been out for more then 2 years and you just now get a PS2, which has been out for 8 years. What's the deal?

I would suggest finding MGS the essential collection you get 1,2 and 3 for 30 bucks. although you do need a ps1 memory card for MGS1. God of war series for sure get, devil may cry 1 and 3 (special edition) get, don't bother with 2 cause it sucks. Also FFX I heard was very good from one one buddie, I dont play RPG's but if you do check it out. But there are many many games out there on PS2 that are really good.
