PS3 owners: who's upgraded their HDDs? what size?
seamonkey420 | 3:29 PM on 12.04.2008 36 comments

one thing thats pretty sweet about the Playstation3 is that Sony allows us to upgrade the hard drives w/normal laptop sata harddrives.

so, how many of you have upgraded yours and to what sizes?

me, i've upgraded my hdd 3 times.

-started w/the factory 60gb
-upgraded to 160gb
-upgraded to 320gb
-last month, upgraded to a 500gb.

btw, here are the specs of what kind of drive the ps3 takes:

2.5" Laptop HDD
SATA150 or SATA300
5400RPM or 7200RPM (factory drive is a Seagate SATA150, 5400RPM harddrive)
Should be able to handle any capacity (atleast up to 500gb, doubt they make 1tb drives yet)

Stock 80GB from the black MGS4 bundle. I stream all my media through my PC or a USB external hard drive, so there's no need to dump any media into the drive.

I still have my 80G and havn't seriously considered changing it... I would if I didn't have a computer hooked up to my TV but I do, so I havn't... If there was a VLC player for the PS3 then you would have me at 500G/7200RPM drive... until the PS3 can play anything I throw at it, its still just my blu-ray player... Demos are short lived on my system so no need for space...

60 gig to 250. i got tons of games, music, photos, movies AND linux(w/ its 10 gig eating power) and i still have about 138 gigs left. why do you keep upgrading? too many demos?also you can put the old ones back in for cold storage of shit.

i guess i am a sucker for those movie thumbnails you get when the movie is on your ps3's internal harddrive.

Launch 60gig to 250 gig (found one for cheap last boxing-day)

Theres a few 500gig 2.5" drives around and with 3.5" drives hitting 1.5tb and up I can see the 750gig and 1tb 2.5" drives not that far away. Thats when I'll be giving away my 250 for a 1tb.

I just like storing alot of stuff on my ps3 like all the PSN games and with all the mandatory installs any avid gamer with a ps3 might wanna bump up their hdd (or just delete the data when you're done with a game and ect.)

Started off with 40 GB, only upgraded when my laptop's motherboard died. This left me with a perfectly usable 160GB HDD so I threw it into my PS3. I'm sure I'll upgrade it again eventually, but probably not at least for a year or two. It is nice having movies on there though, it's easier than lugging discs around. One annoying thing with that though is dealing with all the containers and shit if you want HD rips, the coversion becomes much more lengthy and annoying.

Also, forums.

Went from 60gig launch to a 250gig and I have 198gigs left and I went with Seagate as they just rock.

I have an external HDD (seagate) that I keep all my movies on.

I upgraded to a 320GB drive the moment I bought my used 60GB (backwards compatible) model, but it only reads about 280GB. I'm pretty sure there's a limit on what capacity it can read at this moment, so I don't know how much that 500GB drive is going to help you out.

I've still got over 150GB left after downloading pretty much every free video, demo, and a bunch of games, though no installed games since I only own LittleBigPlanet. I'm such a download whore.

I put in a 250 gb. careful not to strip the screws on the drive holster. you know what's cool though, you can extend the esata cable out of the system and use a full external drive, up to 2 TB. it doesn't look pretty but hello home media server....

From a 60 gig launch model to what is it, 250? Yeah, 250. It is actually my media center so I'm running around with external HD's and memory sticks.

Also you can attach any external HD to it. You just have to make a FAT partition otherwise the PS3 doesn't read it.

I still have my 80, as I'm not quite sure on how to change my HDD, what HDD to use, and all that jazz.

I'm just oblivious...

I have a 40 gig and seriously need to upgrade soon. I'm under a gig :(

And no, I'm not going to "refrigerate" it like I have to with my Wii, hehe.

Do you really need 500GBs on your PS3? That sounds like insane overkill.

my 80gig from the MGS4 bundle is only half filled, so i have no reason to upgrade it yet. it and when it does get close to being full, I'll prob upgrade it.

@Vexed Alex

Movies, Music, Pictures, Game installs. You don't NEED it but if you want to watch your Divx movies on your TV it comes in pretty handy.

Went from the 40 to a 320. I thought it was going to be hard, took me all of 10 minutes to do the actual install. I had been warned to use a screwdriver with a large handle but small point, in order to get those stubborn screws in one go, so they posed no problem.

I'm glad I upgraded. Don't have to worry about those mandatory installs and I like to keep a large music collection on the main drive for custom soundtracks. Not to mention that I'm a sucker for psn. I also have a 300 gig external hooked up which holds all the movies and whatnot.

if you do strip the screws like one of mine did, you can use needle-nose pliers to get them out. i only screwed 2 of the screws back and by hand and fuck the blue one, i threw that away.

Oh fuck, I didn't even think of doing an external from the SATA connection. Hmm.

Sweet fancy jesus. $90 for a 750 GB drive... Hmm...

@Max

Drop the extra cash for a 7200 RPM.
http://directron.com/wd2500bekt.html

The buffer for copying videos to the internal drive will be faster, plus since the drive is faster, you can play higher bit rate HD material off of it.

won't a 7200 rp drive icrease the heat and power even more? if it works then it works but i woundn't want my ps3 to over-over-heat. i really want a solid state drive but they are too expensive right now.

qraze ps3s rarely overheat and the drives are small it really wouldn't be an issue

PS3 does read the full 500GB drive but uses a portion of it for the XMB.

i was afraid it might not but i had about 440GB of freespace after formatting. :)

as for those saying overkill, i guess you can listen to your normal music in burnout while i listen to my collection on the harddrive. :)

plus, i hate having to deal w/streaming issues when i just want to watch some monsters inc or best of chris farley. just works instantly.
