So I got this game yesterday, and thought that I should give some impressions on it since, as a short impression, I've enjoyed it so far. The long version is that infinite undiscovery is a decent RPG that isn't the greatest thing ever, but that shouldn't stop you from at least renting it. The story is typical RPG fare, evil froce bent on controlling the world, band of lovable misfits are out to stop them. The characters range from interesting to annoying, from what I've seen so far theres the main hero who is a coward and doesn't want to fight (but is pushed by the other party members eventually), a girl who wants to prove shes as strong as the men, a guy who leads the team that the main hero lookslike, another girl who just wants to do dirty things to the leader guy, two little kids who are definitley not palom and porom from final fantasy 4 (COUGH ripoff COUGH), a dude with a bigass sword who is a jackass, a mage dude who they havn't fleshed out very well, and some sort of holy seer guy. And before you cry "SPOILERS", all these characters were met within the first 2 hours, so STFU.
Yes, you will be hearing this alot. Among the yells of attacks, you will notice the battle system is pretty good, a sort of hybrid between FF XII real time enemy encounters and the tales series hack n slash action. When you go to your menu, the game does not pause, so items and equipment need to be used either quickly or when there is no enemy lurking around. This is what I've come to enjoy about the game so far, but there are a few things that have kept it from being great so far. The voice acting, while good, is overshadowed by bad lip syncing on the characters faces. Sometimes their mouths don't even open at all. This is a minor complaint, but is still unacceptable nowadays. The other problem I have with this game is direction, where the hell am I going now? You can talk to your party members, but all they will say is "alright, now lets go to Fayel." but won't tell you where the hell Fayel is, so you spend an hour roaming around until you find the right area. Other than that, it's pretty good, and when I finish it I think I will put up a complete overview of it (because I hate doing reviews) so look forward to that.
Question for anyone: Do any characters in Lost Odyssey shout anything? Or for that matter does an annoyingly voiced character speak often?
So far I think this game is pretty good. It's definitely a tri-Ace game, so I would reccommend it to anyone who's really into anything they do.
I only speak English.
I'm pretty sure they come with subtitles. Also, I am very glad that I skipped Blue Dragon. From what I hear it was not very good.
Battle system was fun for me. Leveling up my characters and setting up their skills. Four person party through most of the game, but you get a fifth on and off. Throughout the last part of the game the fifth member stays with you. Things play a lot like a watered down job class system. Characters all looked like Dragonball Z vinyl toys too. Not exactly great, but after playing nothing but gray shooting games I wanted something more colorful. I would often see characters who looked much interesting and heroic than my own playable ones.
My biggest complaint was lack of difficulty. Blue Dragon may be the easiest RPG I've ever played. Maybe I'm just more into math and statistics now, but this game was too easy. I downloaded the free difficulty upgrade, but without knowing that it was there most people wouldn't bother. I may replay it on hard to see if that makes it more interesting. The new game+ feature is appreciated for that. I've also read about and seen video of some "super" bosses. I love the idea of a super boss. I'm also going to fight them on hard mode, for extra challenge.
Blue Dragon was fun, but not great or classic. One of my party members voice was cringe inducing. Also worth noting is that you CAN skip cutscenes. Something I wished was in other RPGs so I could stop people talking and play the game.
I <3 Jansen. I found him to be one of the more inspired rpg characters of recent times.
Typically I have a pretty good exploration sense that lets me search an area without progressing the story, but with IU, I always seem to stumble onto story that doesn't let me keep looking around.
But, I really thought there would be more press about it releasing. Kind of makes me worry a bit.
I never really had a hard time finding my way around since if you talk to NPCs and/or your party, they'll usually point which way you need to go eventually. Since the fighting is pretty fun, I don't mind exploring every inch of the map so I kinda knew where some things were ahead of time.
Hell, if FFXII had a fighting system closer to this, I would like it a bit more.
