LittleBigPlanet - Looking past the creation aspect
rooo | 7:14 PM on 01.22.2008 6 comments

It seems that everything I've seen and read about LittleBigPlanet thus far has only focused on the level/character creation aspect of the game. Granted, this is a very large part of the game... but what about the gameplay?

In all the videos I've seen, the gameplay honestly looks quite sub-par. Any time developers have demonstrated levels, they have difficulty jumping up even small little ledges, often resulting in death somehow. And I have yet to see any enemies in the game (though I seem to recall reading somewhere that the game will in fact contain enemies).

For me, character creation in games (and really, any kind of customization) makes me go nuts! I spend as much time as possible carefully crafting whatever aspect of the game, and it's usually a big selling point with me. However, when there's a level creator it's really tough for me to actually enjoy a level I've created. This is because I know the level - I know all the tricks and I know exactly how to beat it. Since the level was born from my mind, there's essentially zero exploration in it.

This is my problem with LittleBigPlanet. If I create all these wonderful levels, sure it'll be sorta neat running through them afterwards, but I'm not sure that's something I'm going to want to pay money for. Sure, levels that tons of other users create will be available online, but unless there are some really compelling platform levels up for grabs, I'm just not sure how fun the game will actually be once I start playing. Time will tell I suppose.

Maybe this is the reason why it was delayed until the fall. But I can't see them delaying so long just for this. Either way I do beleive LBP will be a very, very good game

There are enemies, and there are goals.

I forgot them, though.

They should REALLY release more information about this game.

I'm a huge sucker for customization myself, but if the final product's not good, then how is the customization going to be good?

Seriously hope this game is mroe awesome than I expect.

WOW , is it me or did you miss the part about these levels being UPLOADED TO THE WORLD....

the last video i watched , didnt mention enemies, really didnt show much past a bit of designing, and well i am just as worried that the game may be slightly missing the mark...

BUT , i assure you, your love for creating and customising will not be for naught!!! THE WHOLE WORLD is going to be doing it and well, you get out there and you try THEIR creations....

Also there was mention of certain maps/levels getting a lot of attention , well then the location/origin starts to swell (visialised on a world map)and people can see which ones are being played more.

So this only translates into your hard work being relevant, and that much more rewarding.

where did i see this vid? will look it up.

Nope, it's just you. I didn't miss that part. Right about when I said: "Sure, levels that tons of other users create will be available online, but unless there are some really compelling platform levels up for grabs, I'm just not sure how fun the game will actually be once I start playing."

As I stated previously, unless there are some really skilled people creating levels, I still think the game is going to lack that compelling gameplay.
