Video Games Make You Smart
rocketeer | 10:17 PM on 10.27.2008 4 comments

An article on the Daily Mail suggests that playing video games are making our kids dumber. I got worried, since I just bought my kid a copy of "Spore" for Windows, I was telling myself, "What have I done?".

I started to look for confirmation, and to my surprise, found more articles saying the opposite. Playing video games can actually make my kid smart. This article makes a good case that playing video games actually make kids smart.

I also stumbled on a website that shows a balanced view on the good and bad effects of video games on kids' noggin. The article also cites the specific skills being developed by specific kinds of games. Action games, for instance, develop eye-hand coordination, quick thinking and strategy and anticipation. Strategy games develop multitasking skills and efficient use of resources.

That made me feel better. I realized that playing video games can actually make my kid smart if it is done in moderation. I do not feel guilty anymore. I'm just wondering what real-world skill a game like "Spore" would teach him. Playing god, perhaps?

it all depends on what you play really. I know parents out there who really bitch and moan about Pokemon but games like that, which force you to read in order to get around most of the game, helps big time. I can also say playing RPGs on the PS1 has helped a lot in either reading better, knowing words I didn't know till then, and just realize how stupid america in general are. (including myself. lol)

Hell i'd say GTA games help learn too. in funny and serious ways. I also tap my hat off to Fable II and their "safe sex" push with the condom and disease bit.I nearly died laughing when I saw it.

It's true, rpgs can help a young kids vocabulary tremendously. I'm a senior and I'm still know for my vast vocabulary and I can honestly say playing pokemon and final fantasy really helped in that process.

A lesser known RPG by the name of Final Fantasy VII taught me how to read, and was far more entertaining for me than Hooked on Phonics could ever be.
