How Does This Happen? - Gross PS2 Disc Edition
riomccarthy | 11:06 PM on 01.22.2008 34 comments

Ok, so I've been really hooked on Persona 3 the past couple weeks. I hadn't taken the disc out of the system for that time, as I've been playing it a lot. The disc was in pristine condition when I put it in there, never being in a system and all. And now look at it..

I made sure the system was clean even before I put Persona 3 in there originally, dust free, everything. So how does that happen? I'm sure it'll probably come off with alcohol or something, but that's just gross and very frustrating since I try to keep things in immaculate condition. Any thoughts?

Perhaps your PS2 is full of frosting. It's happened to me before.

Hmmmm. Strange, cloudy white substance on your disc?

Someone probably broke into your house, and did an ass load of blow on the first thing they could find aka your Persona 3 disc.

May be a lot of dust in the system itself, especially around the lens eye. I've had the same problems with my 360.

Get a 10 dollar disc that will clean the lens, and possible purchase a can of compressed air to spray into the nooks and crannies. That should help.

I was going to make some additional joke about shooting yourself in the head and semen, unfortunately the two aren't that related.

Your disc just got a little too excited inside your PS2.

Which.. most of these jokes would pertain to me having a penis which I don't, and I'm not that talented, so I'll just go with the having dust around the lens eye. Thanks tazarthayoot!

My 360 does that sometimes, I don't know why, humidity maybe?

:( did you spit on it?
I don't know sometimes CDs in my car do that.
Does it still play??
maybe from the grease on your fingers from putting it in and out??

@Sadie G: Nice thoughts =P I'm sure it still plays, hard telling if it's looked like that for the past few days as I hadn't taken it out of the system since i started playing it until now. I have never touched the under side of the disc with my fingers just the edges and made sure they were clean.

Does your ps2 have a penis?

ahh i tried!
as long as it plays it will be okay.
although I'm like that too, I can't have scratches, marks, nothing on my consoles or games.
My ds lite is smudge free :)

Mine too! Yeah I'm really careful with stuff. I got it all cleaned off with alcohol and no scratches so I got safe this time. I went ahead and blew out the system with canned air again just to be safe. Game seems to be working fine thankfully.

It happened with my GH3 disc. I have no idea what's causing it but since I tried to clean it up quickly with the edge of my shirt, I scratched the disc beyond use and I hate to repair it with Merlin's Magic Kit. It works now; but for the record, this is the first time this happened to my PS2 games, ever.

peculiar...it does look like some kind of liquid.

Perhaps moisture build up and then evaporation? If the temperature changed rapidly it could have produced moisture, and the further evaporation of that would have caused trace minerals to be left behind, forming the spots you see all over the disc.

That's about all I can offer, although it could possibly be some type of disc rot.

If you do clean it, take a soft (softer the better) cloth or towel and wipe from the inside to the outside. Do not wipe in a circular motion, just straight from the inner ring to the outer rim. Do that a couple of times and let us know if it's still there.

Hope that works...

Yeah I've had two PS2s, well, I still do, and have played tons of games on both of them and this is the first time this has ever happened. For the record this happened on my slim PS2, was that your's as well?

@Cameron3000: Thank you very much for the info! I did get it cleaned off and I'm playing it now and seems to be working fine. I appreciate the tips!

Quick, just change the title to somehow blame GameStop! Then Joystiq will pick up on the story and you'll get tons of hits!

=P I did buy the game from Gamestop but I've had it far too long for that to have anything to do with it. Plus it was new, and was pre-ordered so I've had it since the day it came out. Plus I'd rather hear from people on Destructoid, not Joystiq. ^~

Ever seen what happends when you use one of those disk cleaner things? like you put some cream on it and pop it in the thing.. makes wierd smugs after.. ever after washes.. though thats your problem.. but you said you never taken it out

Yeah it's definitely not from a disc cleaner. I don't use those, if I ever have that big of a problem I go get the scratches buffed out.

Glad that helped. Yea, just take note if happens again it's probably temperature related. It could be the rapid heating of the PS2 mixing with the cooler air around it causing slight condensation.

Just keep an eye on things and I'd probably take the disc out after each use, just because Persona 3 is a great game and it's very rare (would be terrible to have to buy a used copy for a hundred dollars in a year!).

Where is your PS2 located? If its in some cramped cabinet or something dust can filter into it and when it circulates like that with poor ventilation you end up getting "gunk" build up like that.

I actually have wood flooring sample squares that I place on top of my carpet so that I can have them pulled out from the storage tv cabinet, and be able to breathe while NOT being on my carpet. I'm just still weirded out by why this is the first time this has happened when I've played games this same way for years.

"Any thoughts?"

You loved the game so much that you came all over it? That's true video game love right there.

if only I had a pic of the nonsense I saw on the back of my Chrono Trigger disc after my friend returned it.

seriously I popped it in without seeing the back and the bad boy barely made it to the "grandfather clock" menu screen. it was that bad before I cleaned it.

thankfully it's still playable and did I ever get on my friend about it. Said he was sorry (and I'm sure he meant it. We keep are games pretty clean as it is.) but still. I wonder WTF he was doing for such a thing to happen.

Whats important is that the game is working.

Persona 3 is simply splendid.

It either seems like oxidation of the disc or some kind of dust build-up. Either way, it's good that it came off without ruining the disc.

Huh, I was going to say that maybe it was a bum disc and the layers started separating, but it's good to hear that it works fine now.

Your disk drive spinning actually creates a small vortex which sucks air in through the central disk hole and blows it over the surface of the disk in a PS2. With all the dust that accumulates in the fans of the system, this air tends to be quite dirty and with a small amount of grease from fingerprints or even just natural humidity in the air, the disks can end up looking really messy after even just a few days.

I'm totally making this up but it sounds plausible, doesn't it? ;)

Wow, you managed to get a LOT of useless comments!

I also would recommend putting the CD into the case rather than leaving it in the machine; the ps2s and ps3 seem to be a magnet for dust, and as mentioned before, condensation can occur, resulting in the disc film/spots from just the dust!

I try to regularly use a can of compressed air to keep the unit nice and dust-free.

Hope this helps somehow~
