I'll try to keep this spoiler free. Don't read if you want to finish the game without the taint of someone else's opinions.

So I finally finished Assassin's Creed 2 and the first thing out of my mouth was "at least I don't have to play that again". Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game for the most part but the more I played it, the less I liked it. I felt that they made some good changes but lost some of the things I liked about the first game. For example, the careful planning of each assassination and collection of intelligence was sorely missed.
The game is still repetitive without the bonus of having a reason for completing each task. You perform assassinations for DeMedici without knowing why you are loyal to him. It is almost a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" type of mentality.
Race events just emphasize how frustrating the free running mechanic is. I would rather see them spend the time to get that right instead of all the wonderful "history lessons" they threw into the game. Yes, the information was interesting but get the core of the game perfected before you add the flavor text. Besides, the race event isn't really interesting and I think should only be used as a tutorial to introduce free running. Just my opinion.
I got no satisfaction from the beat up events. I'm really not sure why they were in the game in the first place. Was it an attempt to show Ezio as a morally good person? He is a man who's main reason to live is revenge. Can he really be bothered to stop a man from cheating on his wife? I mean come on, Italian men are a passionate breed. How can one woman be expected to satisfy such a creature? I guess it's ok for Ezio to spread himself around since he had the decency to not marry any of his lovers.
Part of me has that "gotta catch em all" impulse. I really wanted to collect all the feathers. Not because of some new equipment or achievements to be earned. I truly wanted to make my mother happy. I wanted to help her get through the grieving process. I'd say this is a tribute to how immersive this game is but the fact is I didn't complete that task. It became a tedious task on par with finding the flags in the first game. I just lost interest. And honestly, since we are reliving Ezio's memories, the feathers should show up on the map just like everything else created by the animus. Is consistency too much to ask for?
My biggest gripe came right at the end. In an age where the goal of many games is to immerse the player, why would they do something to completely pull you out of that experience? Credits should roll after the game is done, not during the climactic final scene. I feel cheated to be honest. I wanted to walk away from the game satisfied but my final emotion was anger. I care as much about who made the game as I do about who the dolly grip was in Avatar. It's an egotistical and ignorant move. I appreciate what you do but I will never remember your name and it is unlikely that I will ever meet you. I know one person who works in the industry, that's it. I could have forgiven the rest, at least they were trying to address the problems with the first game. I appreciate the effort, try better next time. This is unforgivable.
Now, it wasn't all bad. I enjoyed most of the puzzles and the conspiracy theory they included. The final puzzle was quite clever. I liked the villa and the idea that you were working toward making your city better and more prosperous. I liked the new weapons, except the gun. And even though I never tried it, I appreciated the introduction of poison. The double hidden blades was quite useful as was the new methods of assassination. And the setting itself was beautiful. Unfortunately, I never ended up liking Ezio. I felt like he was merely a tool and that he was allowing himself to be used by everyone without ever knowing why. I kinda feel the same way about Desmond. I guess we'll learn about that in the next installment. I sincerely hope they get it right, I want to like it.

Isn't ezio a tool of the Templars and the assasins anyway? After all, aren't we really just jacked into ezio's/altairs memory and we are along for the ride?
I'm not flaming your blog by the way bro, just want to be sure my understanding of the game is correct.
I agree that I didn't become in any way attatched to Ezio thru the entire game but I did enjoy it the game quite a lot.

As for the feathers, screw that. I thought ubi had learned from the flags but sadly some mistakes seem destined to be repeated.

I'm glad to see more people see it as the sham of a game it really is. They took out all the recon, added the most cartoonish and silly characters I've seen outside of actual cartoons, and the only additional gameplay element I actually enjoyed was chasing down thieves.

Hell, the actual assassination missions were WORSE than in the original. It used to be that each one had an entirely different kind of challenge. Now all you have to do is walk right up to the guy and stab. Boom, mission complete.

Agreed, the asassinations from ac1 took a certain amount of skill and forward planning whereas in the latest installment I never felt mentally challenged (hurr durr).

I love the conspiracy theory tho so I will undoubtably buy the 3rd installment.

Not so much a tool for the Templars but I agree he was a tool for the Assassins. At least Altair was more of a free thinker. I wonder if the characters were written this way. Where Altair was intelligent and got where he was by skill, Ezio got there by luck and circumstance. Perhaps his only real contribution was to pass on the message to Desmond.

The story was pretty woefully told. For the most of the game I didn't really know who I was killing or why or I was killing them outside of the fact that they are "bad templars" and I didnt much care as after the first kill it didnt really seem to have much direct link to the emotional pull which was Ezio's family being killed. At least Ezio was likeable and fun to play as unlike Altair and Desmond who have about as much personality as a wet sponge.

The two main problems with the game are the same as the first. Repition and the God awful combat system. Theres no challenge in the game! No point in getting money to buy armour as the best armour in the game you get for free and theres no point getting that because combat amounts to "wait for attack, push instant kill counter button". Also why even bother sneaking around when an entire army will just stand around you in a circle and wait for you to kill them one by one? So many shocking poor things like that really ruined what could have been a great game.

As for the end credits I think your being a little harsh, acutally I think your being very harsh. Alot of games force you to sit through the credits before revealing some extra little scene at the end after 5 minutes of waiting, think Halo or the MGS series. I thought the way they did the credits was well presented and original. Also if you've spent two years working on a game I think you have every right to want to let people know you've worked on it.

I think the best hope for Assassins Creed 3 is to make the game more linear and force the player to think more about the enviroment and how to take advantage of it. Basically they should make it more like Hitman.

If my memory serves correct I believe it says in one of the final scenes that Ezio is a conduit for the message the "others" have to deliver to desmond. That's why she is talking to and looking at us (the player) and not Ezio.
For all the gripes about repetition and dumbed down asassinations I think the final 3-4 scenes capped the game off spectacularly and where handled very well indeed.

I know it isn't a perfect sequel to a game that wasn't a perfect start to a new ip but it seems awfully popular to hate on ac2 at the moment.

I may have been harsh about the credits but my main point is that the credits rolled during gameplay. I have never encountered this and it was an unnecessary distraction. I am fine with the credits rolling and having an extra scene afterwards, but not during gameplay.

I'm not sure if it has become popular to hate on this game or not. I enjoyed it for the most part but it had some glaring flaws that put into question it's 91% metacritic score. I think the timing of all the complaints for this, as well as other games comes when a large group of people complete the game. Maybe I'm wrong about this but the timing on these things seem to work that way.

I love the concept of this series and I'm hoping that Ubisoft is listening to the feedback. They made both improvements and mistakes in this game and I hope the next one will be better.

It's getting a lot of criticism because fans of the original (like myself) don't like the fact that they dumbed down parts of it that didn't need to be dumbed down, and a lot of the people they were trying to win over by doing this aren't always happy with it anyway.
