Old School Games: Demons Crest
randombullseye | 8:05 PM on 08.07.2008 10 comments

While reading a comic book, Batman issue 515, I noticed an advertisement for a game that seemed to be exactly the type of game I wanted to play. The name of the game was Demons Crest. Years later when I finally procured a copy, I was delighted to find one of the best games I've ever played.

Demons Crest is a spin off from Ghouls & Ghosts. So hit start and boot up the game. It starts with a boss battle. An epic boss battle with a zombie dragon. Yes, I'm not joking! A zombie dragon!

That is the very first thing you do. Pretty much EVERY boss is the most epic monster you can imagine. Its better not to be expecting them, but I must say some of the final and optional bosses are amazing. They're brutally difficult but entirely beatable. Its the type of thing that makes a gamer like me try that much harder.

The game is a horror themed action platformer. A lot of the gameplay consists of you going to a level, beating it one way, and then later returning with an upgraded weapon or new gargoyle power. When you come back you can swim under water or fly up to a new spot, opening up another level with another giant boss! The upgrade system itself is very well done. You pick up different gargoyle upgrades that change your demon into different variations. The picture here shows the water demon in his element.

Whats even cooler than that are talismans that give you passive abilities like taking half. You can also pick up different fireball abilities that have different effects. You get a lot of options to choose from. You can also buy healing items, which again, more and more options to choose from. Even the level select screen is this cool Mode 7 view.

One bit of warning, some of the optional bosses are almost unbeatable. Other than that, this game is one of the best ever. If you somehow missed out on this amazing game, PLEASE go find a copy and play it immediately! I didn't mention the music or sound, because I usually play my games muted, but this one has some very atmospheric creepy tunes. Almost like Casltevania music. I know a lot of people like that sort of thing, so I thought I'd mention it.

Be sure and check out my other old school game articles.

I've only briefly played this game. I didn't get it straight away, so I stopped playing (I had a lot of...legitimate games to get through).

I'm gonna add it to the list of stuff to play again.

Awesome game, I picked it up for cheap a while ago when some rental store was selling their old SNES games.

Wow, this game looks beautiful.

this game is so badass. it feels like a combination of Megaman and Ghouls and Ghosts or whatever the title is.

I'll be doing a write up about the NES one next week.

Interestingly, the NES game was a sequel to the gameboy game. I only played a little bit of the gameboy version, but they were both also worth playing. Its a great series that I wouldn't mind a revival of.

The only thing wrong with Demon's Crest is a lack of action in the levels. Not that it isn't there, but it feels like there should be more. The music is hauntingly GORGEOUS (hell, so are the sound effects) and the visuals are fantastic. The "bad" ending that you can achieve early in the game probably turned a lot of people off who didn't realize there was more game left, sadly.

The first RetRose Tinted post I ever wrote was about this series. I absolutely adore Gargoyle's Quest and would love to see another entry.

I love Gargoyle's Quest for the Gameboy, it was a random purchase at a flea market when I was younger. The label caught my eye (no box or manual though :( ), it looked cool, so I bought it and it rocked so much. When I found out that there was one for the NES I wanted it pretty badly, but could never find it. Anyway, years later thanks to emulation I got to try out the NES Gargoyle's Quest and it actually turned out to be pretty much the exact same game as the Gameboy version, except that it was in color and looked somewhat better. Not a bad deal at all though.

Demon's Crest, I was never able to buy, but when I was younger and we had a card for West Coast Video I rented it for like a week. It was awesome, and the graphics were mind blowing, at the time. The only problem was that it was hard as shit, I don't think I ever got past the first level after opening level in the Colosseum. Great game though from what I played.

It would definitely be nice to see a resurrection of the Gargoyle's Quest series.
