You Only Get One: Girlfriend or Videogames?
ran24 | 10:07 AM on 01.03.2009 42 comments

So, I've realized that when not in a relationship, videogames can be like a girlfriend. They make you happy, you spend a lot of time with them, and you look forward to being with them after work or school :) This leads to the question: If you could only have one, would you pick a girlfriend or videogames?

I know at first it seems like a no-brainer to go for the girl, so let me clarify. The girl is cute and say an 8/10, she's rarely a bitch, and has a personality that can exist harmoniously with yours. By no videogames, I mean you can never play anywhere, not just your house. No hanging out with your friends and playing Smash bros, no Rock Band, no coming home and wrecking people in CoD, and no RE5 for you when it comes out. You can only watch others play at most, with tears building slowly in your eyes :)

Personally, I'd still take the girl. When I was in a relationship, I spent a lot less time playing vidjagames so I think I could do it, and I also have other things to spend leisure time on like Magic the Gathering, comics, and anime. How about you guys?

EDIT: To clarify, this is not a situation that is happening to me. If I had a girlfriend who was like "games or me", you bet that bitch would be gone. This is just a hypothetical situation, and you do not get to have a balance. It's like a genie comes to you and says "I can have you meet this girl who is ideal for you, and you would both fall in love. However, if you ever pick up a controller, the girl will break up with you."

Dunno mate, difficult question...

I once had a gf that hated the time i spent on gaming and actually posed the question " Me or your games " and I sent her walking after a 7 month relationship...

Now if the choice is NEVER gaming or NEVER a girl, it might be a bit harder... then again, I've been playing since I was 7 ( 26 now ) and I think that a life without gaming would not qualify as a decent life for me... So i think I'd go for the games...

i have both :3. she always piss off when i left MSN open and start playing something on steam, but i told her to download Steam too so we can talk there. And when i'm on the Xbox, she just talks me on MSN.

And if she wants to see me irl and i'm busy with games, i tell her to come over and play with me

anyone who chooses games over girls on this blog i believe are plain out lying trying to be cool or different. if so, you must be a virgin and have never had a girlfriend. don't lie, we know the real answer and i'm starting to think this blog is now a pointless attempt at catching people in a lie.

Choose the girlfriend... multiplayer portions of relationships are way better than the ones from the games...

@Qraze

The choice can be a lot harder than you think. When you've grown up on videogames, and a lot of your humor and friends are heavily influenced by it, being isolated from it could mess up your lifestyle. I was abroad last semester in Budapest, and very few people played videogames often. Conversations were frequently boring, about sports, movie quotes, and gossip. It was interesting, and I still had fun with the traveling and drinking games and all, but it's nice to be back home in a culture and friends that I identify with.

You have to strike a balance, being in a relationship doesn't mean abandoning all of your hobbies. If she can't live with one night a week being game night, find someone else.

Ig it was the girl you said above , and if she had geeky interests (Star Trek , Magic ...) , then the girl ...

It all depends. If she's an awesome girl, then maybe the girl. If not, the games all the way. Girls are punks.

How about a girlfriend that plays games WITH you.

You heard me, this may sound crazy but they do exist and they can be hot, take the Destructoid member Mix for example. His girl play games almsot as much as him, and she hot.

Win win?

I think so.

My wife plays, but if given a choice, the woman would have to be amazingly hot.

Like a Victorias Secret model or something like that.

For one of them, I'd say goodbye to video games.

So long as I have hands, video games are where it's at.

The hands will make me a sandwich without fuss, and they don't get headaches.

But at the same time I can go ahead and turn this question on its ass and say fuck a girlfriend, I'll take videogames and a bunch of booty calls for the win

Since I've never encountered the girl you describe in my life (or at least she didn't stay that way for long), I'm going to say games.

You know what you're getting with games, it says so on the back. With girls there are all kinds of awesome bullet points designed to get you interested, but then after 3 months they turn into bunny-boiling, moaning dicks.
