Is it weird that I don't like (and suck at) FPS's compared to before?
ptcoakley | 8:39 PM on 03.28.2009 4 comments

With all these new FPS's coming out, both continuations of old franchises and original creations, it makes me wonder why I really don't enjoy them anymore. I spent much of my time in high school playing games like Team Fortress Classic, Counter-Strike, Call of Duty, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake, etc. I even clanned in a few games, spending a lot of time in practices and matches just for the thrill of competing online. But now? I feel like everything has changed. Is it me or the games?

I'd like to think that I was competent at shooters, but one of the things I don't really understand (or obviously like) about today's FPS is that I just suck now. PC or console, I just can't hold my own anymore. I'm not sure what's really changed, but no matter what game it is I just can't really "own" like I used to. What was once one of my favorite things to play has become a chore. I think in some games on the PC I can still do pretty well, but the majority is just results in me getting destroyed, and it's just puzzling how much things can change over the years.

So is there anyone else out there like me? The people that would kill the shit out of n00bs and capture the flag with ease, but now can barely keep themselves from the bottom of the scoreboard?

well it seems you were just focued in FPS when you were younger, and if you just concenrate in one genre like that, you are bound to get really good.

And your last blog talked about fighters this year, so I assume you have opened yourself to more genres. I used to only play shooters when I got my Xbox 360. But now I have started to play SF:IV and more XBLA titles. Now I can't own in Gears 2 anymore, I used to be in a Gears 1 clan that was ranked 1st in team ladder. I was good.

I guess we have to give up some n00b crushing SKILLZ to enjoy the medium as a whole.... Im ok with that. :D

^^Yeah, I did progressively get more into fighting games and transformed my competitive nature to that genre, and once again I would have to say it's happening with my renewed interest in playing more simple games like Peggle against my friends. It's not necessarily so much that I was just playing FPS, but yeah I definitely had a bigger focus on them as I was younger. It just feels weird to suck at a genre that I was once good at playing, especially when I just don't have the will or enjoyment factor to continually practice to get better.

Hmm, i was in a clan in MOH:AA Spearhead, id say that after three years of playing the game, entering a game and just staying top 3 on scoreboard was just a regular thing, and if there was 1 or 2 other players that i knew was good id just focus my time on individual fighting with them even when there was 10 vs 10 teams, ... just killing the noobs as a habit and searching for the good veteran players was what i did most of the time, it was the only thing that kept my interest in that game at that time...
