Fighting games in 2009 and what to expect
ptcoakley | 6:17 AM on 03.22.2009 19 comments

2008 turned out to be an OK year for fighting games, and even just between the time of Nov/Dec to now a lot of things have happened. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has come and gone, and Street Fighter IV has finally been released after much waiting. Then you have worldwide release dates for BlazBlue and King of Fighters XII, and the all-but-confirmed re-release of Marvel vs Capcom 2 for PSN and XBLA. The world of fighters is going to be very crowded soon, a problem the genre hasn’t faced since the early-to-mid ‘90s. And that’s not even including Tekken 6 and the possible Virtua Fighter 5: R for the end of the year.

Finally released almost at the end of 2008, HD Remix wasn’t exactly the ideal situation for most Street Fighter fans. While it made a big splash at first, the many bugs and apparent issues with the game forfeited any chance of it being picked up for the long term. Broken leaderboards, bad desynching, glitching lifebars, and weak tournament options made many players give up within the first month. While it was finally patched just last week, SFIV has clearly taken over the top spot for online fighters on the 360 and PS3.

Speaking of Street Fighter IV, the game seems to be very popular with casuals and even some hardcore fans, which is what the genre needs. I personally have a list of grievances I have with it, but then again I am very particular about what Street Fighter games I like. While I wouldn’t give Capcom/DIMPS any awards for what they’ve done with the online play, it still stands up really well all things considered, and I’m hopeful that anything they do in the future will now be almost on par with GGPO.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 as a downloadable title is certainly something I’m hoping isn’t false, and at this point it seems to have a possible release this July. While some people want a rebalanced version, I’m all for getting the original arcade release. Rebalancing Marvel would take an incredibly long time and wouldn’t be worth it just because people always find problems with balancing anyways. Custom soundtracks will make everything about this game that much better.

With King of Fighters XII coming out this summer, I can only say that I’m cautiously optimistic about this one. It’s missing quite a few characters that everyone would love to have included that aren’t, like Yamazaki. Since this is a dream match, nobody should be excluded, but it’s sort of understandable considering the work that must go into all those new HD sprites. For all these new 2D fighters high-definition sprites has finally become an important objective in development, some of the more creative and beautiful coming from BlazBlue, the so-called “spiritual successor to Guilty Gear. While I’m not the biggest fan of Arc’s stuff, I’ll definitely be giving this a shot when it comes out this summer.

On the 3D front, not much is coming until fall at the earliest. Namco is taking its sweet time getting Tekken 6 onto the PS3 and 360, and SEGA is being incredibly non-talkative about porting over Virtua Fighter 5: R. Outside of those two, Dead Or Alive is the only other franchise in the 3D fighter genre that seems to have any developments for the near future. Despite Itagaki’s departure from Tecmo, a new DOA was at least confirmed to be in the making last year. Whether or not it will be exclusive remains to be seen as the formerly 360-exlusive Ninja Gaiden II is going to the PS3, and the recent economic changes have pushed developers to making more multi-platform games regardless of said series’ prior history.

And with that, the year in fighters is basically done. There’s no Arcana Heart 2 console release for the US, no news on any other downloadable games, and no new details on Dissidia’s US release coming this August. While this seems like it’s a year packed full of good fighters, I’m still left wanting more. Where’s some semblance of effort on getting Tatsunoko vs Capcom out of Japan? Why is the only new Dragon Ball game a terrible 3D fighter exclusive to the PSP that’s based on the upcoming disaster movie? All of these games and there’s still no details on a lot of things. Here’s hoping that we get some answers by the next article on the subject.

Capcom USA is still working really hard to get Tatsunoko Vs Capcom out of Japan. I guess the main problem right now is that 8ing, the game's developer, is a fairly small company and is already to busy to work on localizing the game.

That's good, because they can't stay that busy forever. Eventually, the game will come out here. If it's going to come out with its Tatsunoko characters in place, or is Marvel or Capcom characters will take their place, no one knows for sure.

Either way, I know I'll be happy to buy the game again. Even with barely anyone around here to play, I still pop the game in every few days to practice combos and soak in the awesomeness of a Viewtiful Joe/Okami/Mega Man/Lost Planet crossover.

^^ Honestly even if it just had Capcom characters in place of the Tatsunoko ones I'd be fine with it. I've been wanting to import it but I really can't justify the high price, especially when I'm content with fighters ATM.

@Ptcoakley: Play Asia has Tatsunoko vs Capcom on sale for $50 until the end of March.

You mean no US release for Arcana Heart 2, right? It's set to release in japan next month. I'm sure with the Fighter mania going around, Atlus will release it in the US as well.

@nilcam: thanks for the heads up yo. Had no idea.

@s0lesurvivor: thanks. I've only heard that we're getting cabinets and had't see anything about a console release. Just checked online and now I see. Interesting. When I lived in Japan I got to mess around with the loke test of AH2, and once it finally came out nobody in my local arcade played it.

Great Article, you reminded me about the beauty that is Blazblue
also i would thoroughly enjoy a Marvel vs Capcom 2 port to XBLA, however i really would appreciate a re-balancing of some sorts, with me playing the dreamcast version of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 the same amount of time as Street Fighter 4, i really noticed that some of the high tier characters are pretty much god compared to the lower tier characters (which my average team consists of). I guess I am just used to how amazingly balanced Street Fighter 4 is

^^ the problem with rebalancing is that it would take FOREVER to rebalance MvC2. There are just too many characters in the game. I would just suggest playing with people who use bullshit characters for fun. In Japan I never played any top tier characters... Everyone uses whoever they want and it's just a much more fun game in the end for it. That said, I still like high-level play in Marvel 2 as it is now.

BlazBlue will be fun.

MvC2 needs a balance, its been on xbla on ESRB.com since what october last year?

Maybe capcom has been working on that.

Probaly not the case, but it would be nice. And they would include classic settings too anyway. I dont see why Capcom would not do anything before releasing it.

I know it would take forever to balence it, I really do enjoy the game as it is now and i would gracefully accept just a straight port, however I would pay a full 60$ for a Marvel VS Capcom HD Remix especially if they put Sirlin at the helm of that.

A man can still dream...

If they did rebalance it I definitely think it could be really good for maintaining an even stronger fanbase. However, a lot of Marvel players are purists and would probably be against it from the start.

Unless they hired a much larger team than HD Remix had, a Marvel Vs Capcom 2 HD would take 20 years to come out. I'm guessing the game contains literally 100 times as many frames of animation.

That said, the game could potentially look amazing with redrawn sprites, unlike HD Remix which looked great in stills, but pretty awful in motiuon.

@Jon Holmes: Exactly, that's why I'm always frustrated when people say "OMG MvC2 HD Remix"! Now, Vampire Savior, that's a game I wouldn't mind in HD...
Also, nice coverage of the fighters of '09. I'm very excited. Also, you forgot Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus for PS2, Wii, and PSP; and Samurai Showdown Anthology for PS2 and PSP. I'm hoping that KoF UM 2002 comes out as well.

@jonathan: yeah definitely. You'd be talking about re-doing sprites from various game series as well, bringing up the question of "why stop with Marvel 2?" when you're gonna have new Alpha sprites, etc. I really don't think I need a digital download version of EVERY fighter at this point, and I hope they just focus on making good ports/re-imaginings/whatever instead. Some people think it's going to be "remixed" just because Capcom has talked about doing more, but god knows that project would require a competent team that was a lot bigger than Backbone.

@thecleaningguy: yeah, I left some stuff out to keep the article from being too long and including everything. I'm interested in Ultimate Match, but honestly with 98 having taken so long I have to wonder if I'd even care since KOFXII will have been out for a while by the time it could potentially come out.

I liked your blog. Now I've always liked fighters for their VS modes, but I think those modes really shine with local multiplayer (if you've ever been to a lan party you'd understand). And maybe this will be the reason I backoff the genre for a while, you see I live in mexico so online VS always gives me pretty crappy pings and not having any known freidns that either like or are any good in the genre makes my copy of SF4 look pretty dull.

But I am looking forward to that new KOF, graphics look jawdropping.

Good read. I have to say that I am excited about KOF as the sprites look amazing and the fighters look like they take up half the screen size. Hopefully the mechanics of the game are just as good.

I'm looking forward to Blaz Blue, Tekken 6, and KoF12.

And maybe Arcana heart 2, Tatsunoko Vs Capcom, and MvC2 on XBLA if they all get released.
