Okay, I made this as a post in the forums, but it was a good rant, so I figured I'd make it my first Blog here. Not that anyone will read it, but I thought it was worth saving. Anyway, here goes.
I'll try to keep this spoiler-free, plot wise, but I just HAD to complain about this game. First I'll say that I LOVED FFIV. I played it on the SNES as a kid but never finished it, and was delighted when the DS version came out so that I could complete it. It was a great game (though the last dungeon was a bitch). But The After Years. Oh god, The After Years. The main game is fun. Playing as a new character and getting to interact with all of the old characters was awesome. It offered a new plot, and was fun to play for more than just nostalgia's sake. And then, just as the plot was getting good, it ended. The main game is LESS THAN 5 HOURS LONG. Now, this might have been acceptable, seeing as it is an $8 game, and it expects you to buy the DLC to have a full experience. But that's the problem: The DLC is HORRIBLE. I just completed my second DLC add-on, and I severely doubt I'm going to continue. Each one is less than 3 hours long. That's barely the intro in most RPGs. Now, if they were actual continuations of the main game, this would be fine (in my eyes, I know some would disagree), but the problem is that each one starts you over again as a NEW CHARACTER. Meaning that you have to level up from the beginning each time you start a new DLC. And by the time you level enough to even notice a difference in your stats, the game is over. The whole reason RPGs are fun is that feeling of slowly getting stronger, easily kicking the asses of enemies that used to give you trouble, and building up to fight the final boss. All of these DLC add-ons just feel like playing the boring intro to a mediocre RPG over, and over, and over. In short, unless you are a die-hard FF:IV fan who needs more content, do not waste your money on The After Years.

I haven't played IV yet but I'm shocked at the length of it and puzzled by the idea of the DLC. So yeah seems like you have every reason to rant.
A pic would've been nice but ah well :P
My main beef is with Rydia's tale. I grinded like crazy, and took my sweet ass time with EVERYTHING, and it only lasted 5 hours for me. So when you play it, it will probably be 2-3 hours to complete.
Yeah I tend to go through RPGs pretty quickly. I don't mind grinding though. In fact I enjoyed Rydia's Tale just because it was so damn hard in the beginning. Yang's Tale was just flat-out boring though.
Either way, I think this could have been a REALLY great game if they'd just made it a full-length game for $20 or something.
And I agree with you 100%. Releasing episodes for each character is going to be a pain to wait for each new one to come out. I would have been much happier if they had at split the game into 2 episodes. Nine's a little excessive IMO.
What's interesting is that the first episode was centered around Ceodore for the first half, and then Kain the last half. Thank GOD they didn't split that episode into 2. I would have gouged my eyes out. (When it swiched to Kain for the first time, then went to the screen that just read "Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, I almost did! But then it went back to gameplay, and I set the knife down, and squealed with glee.)
Wasted potential.
lol pappadukes, I did the exact same thing. I was definitely relieved when it went back to gameplay though; playing as Kain was probably the part that I enjoyed most.
Also, supposedly the last DLC set to come out is an actual conclusion to the main story, rather than just a character spin-off and is going to cost as much as the main game.
I'm skeptical, but I might still get that, and just skip the rest of the character DLCs.
Didn't you notice that it saves a completed game save file for loading later?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, your last statement confused me a bit: I assume they made this solely for hardcore FFIV fans. It's a retro grind fest!
Anyway, thanks for the info, and I'll be sure to write another blog when I play the chapter that brings everything together.
On a side note: Edge's Tale starts you of with new characters 5 times. That is pure fun.
