About Me

Name: Peter
Home State: New York
Currently Residing In: Utah
Birthday: October 13th, 1985 (I'll always secretly consider the NES to have been a week-late birthday present to me from Nintendo.)

As far as video games go, I've been a gamer since I was two-and-a-half. I try to play whatever interests me, despite what other people think of those games. I don't consider myself to be a "casual" gamer, but I also don't take games unbelievably seriously. They're games, after all. They're meant to be enjoyed, not obsessed over. I never base whether I buy a game or not on a single review -- I have to try the game for myself to be totally sure.

CURRENT FAVORITES:

Metal Gear Solid Series (PS1, PS2, & PS3)
Fatal Frame Series (PS2, Xbox, Wii)
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES (PS2)

Metroid Prime Trilogy (Wii)
Dead Space (PS3, Xbox 360)

So, yeah... Apparently, I'm not allowed to shop at GameStop anymore...
pedrovay2003 | 10:13 PM on 11.05.2007 53 comments

Yes, you read that right... I've been banned.

This happened a couple weeks ago, but I'm just now getting all the details, so now's a good time to post this. Get ready for a long story.

So I was a regular GameStop shopper, mainly for their special edition exclusives. I've been shopping more at Play N Trade* recently, but I still went to GameStop often. I had been going to this specific location (Crescent Corners, 57 E. 11400 S., Sandy UT, 84070) since it opened, and I had even seen employees come and go. Everyone there knew me by name, both first and last. So I went in one day, and I was told by the guy there that I knew the best that the computer said that I wasn't allowed to shop there anymore. When I asked why, I was told I had to talk to a manager (who's been an ass ever since he's worked there, by the way --- he really shouldn't be working in retail with the way he treats people), which I did the next day.

I walked in and asked him what the deal was, and he told me that he "can't tell me all the details, but there were some tapes I have to review and show the police." My mouth was literally hanging open by this point, and I had to consciously stop myself from drooling on the carpet. I figured instead of starting something, I should just head out of the store... For now.

I proceeded to call GameStop corporate for the next few days, and when I finally got in touch with the district manager, she told me to go back into the store and talk to the manager, because she had talked to him. I did this a couple days later, and here's how the conversation went:

MANAGER (smirking): Sorry, but I can't have you in the store.

ME: Your district manager says otherwise. (His smirk fades very quickly.) So what's the story?

MANAGER: Well, we have an eye-witness that says he saw you put something of ours in your pocket and then leave the store.

(This is when things start to get interesting, as he apparently wasn't ready for me to [*gasp*] ask questions.)

ME: When did this supposedly happen?

MANAGER: Well, I don't remember the date...

ME: Okay... What was taken?

MANAGER: I can't remember.

ME: Uh-huh. And you said there were tapes you needed to review. Can I see them?

MANAGER: Well, there actually aren't any tapes.

ME: No, I didn't think there were.

MY DAD (Who was there to make sure I wasn't going to lose my cool): So why didn't you call the police if this happened?

MANAGER: Well, we really didn't see a reason to.

(I'm thinking to myself at this point, "Theft isn't a good enough reason to call the police?")

ME: Okay, so what happened exactly, from your point of view?

MANAGER: Well, you were standing by the PS3 stuff, and after you left, someone came up to us and told us that you took something of ours. I left the store to find you, and you were acting squirrelly in the parking lot (his words, not mine), and then you drove off.

(Now, I know what "squirrelly" means in that sense, but I didn't know what he meant by it, so I thought I'd ask.)

ME: Now, when you say "squirrelly," what do you mean, exactly?

(His word-for-word response?)

MANAGER: Eh, I don't know.

(I'm not making that up.)

MANAGER: All I know is that after we got this tip, we took inventory of that section of the store two days later, and there was something missing.

That was when I said a few semi-rude things under my breath (I didn't think they were rude from my POV) and left. So, what he pretty much told me was this: He didn't know when this "theft" had happened, he didn't know what was "taken," he waited two damn days to take inventory of the store (which means either I'm the only one capable of stealing from them or I was the only person in the store for two days), and he has no idea what he means when he attempts to use big words. And I'm the one who's not allowed in the store anymore.

It took me a few days, but I think I finally figured out what that random guy thought he saw me take --- I'm a new PSP owner, and I was trying to download demos from GameStop's kiosk PSP, which is one of those PSP Demo Stations or whatever they're called. I couldn't get it to work (and none of the employees offered any help to me or any other customers in the store), so I put my PSP back into my pocket and left. That's when the guy told them I stole something --- my own PSP. I have no idea what he meant by the "squirrelly" comment (and neither did he, for that matter), but whatever. Nothing that can be done now, I guess.

So yeah. That's that. It's not like I'd ever give them my business again, even if they got everything figured out (but they never will). So if you're ever in that area of the country, don't bother shopping at that GameStop --- they just might accuse you of taking their stuff (but don't expect them to know what you took or when you supposedly did it, or to even make eye-contact with you at all while you're there).

*Oh, and by the way... If you actually have a Play N Trade anywhere near you, give it a shot if you haven't, because I've found it to be much better than GameStop. In fact, they actually check GameStop's website to see their prices, and then they undercut them by a buck or two. Pretty sweet, actually.

Sandy eh? I live in Midvale/Cottonwood Heights myself. I've been to the Crescent Corners Gamestop and I thought the employees there were assholes.

It might be out of your way, but try the one I go to, 6949 S Park Centre Dr (roughly 7200 S and 1300 E). They're pretty knowledgeable and friendly, and the manager is as nice as can be.

Don't go to Fashion Place though. They might be worse than Crescent Corners.

See, this is why nobody uses those demo kiosks. A Target manager once asked me to turn out my pockets when I had my DS with me one day and had to stop and verify that my worn and battered blue DS Brick that they don't carry hadn't been pried out of their quintuple locked plexiglass case.

They would never do this at my local gamestop, the employees there are smart enough to know that the only thing you can steal from the store would be a 10 cent DVD case. But it seems the folks that work there don't know what the heck is going on, I'd just go to another place from now on.

Anyway, find out if you can sue them for this right, time to exploit their folly if you know what I'm sayin'.

Yeah, you could probably turn this into a legal matter no problem. Call the DM (haha, not Dungeon Master) and let them know what happened and see if you can flip the script on that manager.

Video_Cognito is correct. If you wanted to make the situation "uncomfortable" for the manager, one phone call to the DM or Regional Manager would fixed his crooked shit straight fast. All you need to do is threaten to file citing unfair business practices.

Oh, I'm definitely filing complaints about this. As far as a lawsuit goes, I'm not sure if it'd work, though I'd love that --- I don't think I can sue them if they don't actually get the police involved and try to falsely arrest me, because otherwise it's hearsay. But man, that'd be nice...

It's true: GameStop blows. This is an especially stupid reason to ban you, because they don't even have the actual games out on the racks where they can be stolen. What were they accusing you of stealing, a 30 cent plastic DVD case?

honestly, i think if your dad wasn't there, you prolly would have taken someone's head off.

btw, what DID you say to him? this is a blog site, so i think as long as it doesn't involve any racial slurs, ur prolly safe. but if u still dont think u should, please PM me. i can think of a few times that i would have loved to bitch out a few people, but i always like to hear other people's insults.

I basically just told him straight to his face how much of a damn liar he is, and about how much of a laugh false accusation is. He just kinda looked at me and didn't know what to say about it, but that's no surprise... He obviously had no real knowledge of the situation. I just didn't think they were rude because it was the truth. The best part was that I was saying all this to him and we were discussing this out loud when the store had quite a few customers in it at the time, so they obviously heard what was going on.

I totally know how you feel fellow Utah residents, when I go to gamestop here in Clearfield, I am usually just finished going to the gym and still have my workout clothes on. The minute I walk into the store with an oversized hoodie and running shoes on, they look at me like I'm about to pull out a gun and lay waste to the location. Its funny though they are usually just opening for the day, so they're not quite awake/ready for customers when I come in.

Although I go to Gamestop alot, I have to say I really fucking hate it. I used to buy M-rated videogames from mine with my school ID, but one day I went in to buy Shadowrun and the guy told me I couldn't use that ID. Which is a load of bullshit because I bought 5 or 10 M rated games at the same store with the same ID from THE SAME FUCKING GUY. What made it worse was that the fucker was SMILING when he explained me this.

Write a letter to corporate.

I worked in retail for a little while and there was nothing more feared than a nasty letter.

I would emphasize that the manager was rude and that you were a big customer and skimp on the "you were suspected of shoplifting thing", which isn't likely to go your way no matter how innocent you are.

Dude, get him fired. That is complete BS, maybe if he did his freaking job and actually paid attention to his store this would have never happened. Damn. I work at GameStop (applies flame shield) this to me is complete crap. Call his DM, complain. As a rule, you are not allowed to "ban" someone from the store, unless they do something they can prove without a shadow of a doubt. I hope my store is a "good one." We do massive numbers with reserves and Game Informers with plenty of competition around. I believe it is because we are actually gamers, and bend policy to help people out as much as we can without getting the corporate ban hammer. Also treat the customer with respect and honesty. These horror stories make me cring. Oh, also, we don't allow new game sign out, only used. New game sign out does not a new game make. In closing, he should't work there if he is a dipshit.
